Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the perceptions and experiences of undergraduate students in using strategies for reading texts during the Covid-19 pandemic. Researchers chose to use qualitative research in this study with a case study approach. The participants involved were 14 undergraduate students at the State Islamic University of Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin, Banten, West Java, Indonesia where participants were selected using the snowball sampling method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews which were then transcribed in which the names of participants were written pseudonymously. The collected data is then analyzed by the thematic analysis method. This study found that reading activities during the pandemic have their challenges and advantages and students have started to tend to get used to reading texts on a screen rather than reading in printout form, although some of them still prefer to read in printout form. The five main strategies in reading texts that are commonly used by students during the Covid-19 pandemic are memory association, retelling, previewing, identifying the main idea, and habituation. Researchers conclude that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have forced undergraduate students to get used to reading texts in on-screen form and reading strategies are still varied. Therefore, this research implies that the teaching and learning process should accommodate many strategies in reading texts based on proficiency in English and not dominate just one strategy.

Abstract

Motivated by the profound global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the education sector, specifically in elementary schools, a multitude of new policies have been implemented to address the challenges presented by online learning. Consequently, students often experience fatigue and a waning sense of enthusiasm, necessitating further adaptations amidst the ongoing pandemic. This research endeavours to investigate the efforts undertaken by Islamic education teachers to safeguard the mental health of students during this unprecedented era. The study primarily focuses on the perspectives of Islamic education teachers in elementary schools within the Cilacap district. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and examination of relevant documentation. The researchers employed various analytical techniques, including data reduction, data presentation, and verification of data conclusions, to scrutinize the research findings. The study underscores that Islamic education teachers possess a profound understanding of the vital importance of nurturing students' mental health. They assume a critical role in fostering well-being amidst the pandemic's trials and aftermath. These roles encompass acting as role models, providing constructive guidance, implementing engaging teaching methodologies, fostering effective communication between teachers and students' guardians, promoting positive habits, offering motivational praise, and employing disciplinary measures when necessary. The study concludes with recommendations for the government, educational authorities, and Islamic education teachers to integrate these aforementioned roles into their strategies, particularly at the elementary school level, to safeguard and promote students' mental health.

Abstract

The spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in many countries around the world has changed the learning-teaching process in higher education sectors from face-to-face learning to online learning. This study aims to understand undergraduate students’ views on the implementation of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was conducted on 4th to 8th-semester students at the Islamic higher education, Universitas Islam Indonesia, using a qualitative case study. Findings of the study have consisted of three broad themes; firstly, the advantages of online learning: increasing technological literacy, flexibility in learning, improving self-ability, being financially efficient, and supported various learning media; secondly, the weaknesses of online learning: heavy tasks, less effective and decreased enthusiasm, little control from the lecturers, and technical problems; thirdly, constructive feedback on the implementation of online learning: the creation of interesting learning videos, fun learning strategies, holding quizzes, notification of lectures to be multiplied, free internet quota, and additional time for working on assignments. The findings reinforce other studies where the implementation of online learning still requires improvements, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research can be a reference in policymaking. Further research is needed from the perspectives of lecturers and policymakers to complement the findings.

Abstract

The government continues to carry out various de-radicalization efforts in responding to the phenomenon of terrorism and acts of religious-based extremism that have occurred in Indonesia in the last two decades. One of the deradicalization efforts is carried out through the application of the anti-terrorism law, although many parties are still debating the effectiveness of its enforcement. On the other hand, efforts to deradicalize the government through Islamic educational institutions need to be continued because this aspect is considered the most likely to moderate the understanding of the younger generation of Muslims. This study uses a qualitative approach, with a case study method that examines the views of religious leaders (lecturers and activist of Islamic religious organizations) on the role of Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia in the process of deradicalization and counter-terrorism. Clearly, this study reveals the need for the involvement of Islamic educational institutions in encouraging religious deradicalization programs, particularly on several aspects such as character building, moderate meaning of Islamic doctrine, understanding of the diversity of Islamic history and Fiqh, creation of comparative thought narratives, and taking appropriate action initiatives. good. Thus, this research concludes that the government needs to strengthen efforts to deradicalize through Islamic educational institutions and evaluate the effectiveness of implementing anti-terrorism laws.
