Abstract

This article discusses the personal conflicts between five characters in the film Gohatto. Gohatto is a film by Japanese director, Oshima Nagisa, released in 1999. Director Oshima is one of the legendary directors in Japan who is famous for his works that elevate the uniqueness of the human personality. Likewise, with Gohatto's work, Oshima raises the fluctuation of human desires that clash with tradition and morals, and in the end meet death. The film is set in the bakumatsu era (1853-1869) and tells of the lives of swordsmen in the Shinsengumi group whose job is to protect the Tokugawa shogunate. The uniqueness of this film is that it does not exploit the heroics of samurai who express themselves under the shackles of bushido morality, but rather presents homosexuality in the lives of the swordsmen in this group. This paper will also discuss personal conflicts in five major characters, through a review of the characters’ actions based on the drive that emerge from both the conscious mind and unconscious minds. The method that will be used is psychoanalysis which refers to the theory of Sigmund Freud. The id drive which is the cause of the conflict appears dominant in the five characters and overcomes the bushido morality which is the sublime characteristic of the samurai.

Abstract

Whisper of the Heart is an animated film produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Yoshifumi Kondou. The film tells the story of a teenager named Shizuku who is searching for her true self. Two other characters who play a significant role in Shizuku’s journey are Seiji and Nishi. In this animated film, Kondou not only portrays the lives of teenagers in general but also weaves in the philosophy of wabi sabi, which has three core values: simplicity, imperfection, and transience. This representation of wabi sabi is reflected through the character development of the protagonists. Simplicity is reflected in the lifestyles of Shizuku, Seiji, and Nishi. Imperfection is reflected through Shizuku’s unstable and indecisive nature. Transience is reflected through the figure of the Baron cat statue and Nishi’s memories of the past. Settings such as the Tama Hills, the train tracks, the library, the Chikyuuya studio, and the violin workshop serve to create a quiet and unadorned atmosphere, thereby reinforcing the reflection of wabi-sabi values in everyday life. The philosophy of wabi-sabi teaches that life is not always smooth and beautiful, but it is in the cracks and imperfections that human values are reflected.

Abstract

Background: BPK Penabur Cirebon School had an underused school wall and faced the challenge of transforming it into an artistic feature while creating a welcoming environment. Thirty pupils worked together to create a 16-metre-long mural, and post-activity reflections revealed an increased awareness of environmental sustainability. Purpose of the Study: Improve the creative process among pupils by combining art and education, thereby creating a beautiful and harmonious atmosphere within a supportive environment, whilst the pupils actively participate in the planning, design and painting. Methods: The practical community engagement research is designed to include the following stages: problem identification, planning and collaboration, implementation, reflection, evaluation and reporting and publication of activities via video and scientific publications. Results: This project successfully nurtured the students’ spirit through a sense of togetherness and cooperation, developed their leadership skills in decision-making, and fostered a sense of ownership of the school as their second home. The students successfully transformed bare walls into an artistic, well-organised, integrated and clean environment capable of conveying a powerful message through the theme of harmony. Overall, this project has also enhanced the school’s brand as an institution committed to environmental sustainability, aligned with the SDGs.
