Abstract

Plunturan is one of villages in Ponorogo, East Java Province. The prime product of Plunturan Village is a cultural heritage that is still maintained by the local village community. The various cultural products are Reyog (Reyog Anak, Reyog Perempuan dan Reyog Taruna); Gajah-Gajahan; Jathilan; Ganongan; Tledekan; Karawitan; Wayang Kulit; Coke’an; Metik Desa; Metri Desa; Metri Tandur; Campursari; and Sego Angkruk. Artists come from across generations, passed down through village elders and art groups. Artists today do not consider the potential of art in their village as their main source of income. They have other livelihoods such as farmers, traders, civil servants, government officials, teachers, health workers, private employees. This condition causes a lack of initiative from artists to attract tourists from outside the region. The role of stakeholders in Plunturan Village is very important in developing cultural tourism. The Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) which is the driving force for cultural tourism development activities must develop a strategy to make Plunturan a tourism village. Therefore, this service uses a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and treath) to find out what strategies should be taken to initiate Plunturan Tourism Village based on local wisdom. So that culture-based development is not only aimed at improving culture, but also in carrying out development it is necessary to base on the culture that is owned, especially regarding value systems, attitudes and customs.

Abstract

This study explores the feminist perspective on motherhood in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Prima Santika's Three Weddings and Jane Austen, concentrating on the influence of mother figures on their daughters' romantic and wedding options. The central issue is how different mother approaches reflect broader societal expectations and individual freedom. The research uses a qualitative analysis method, directed by feminist theory and the attachment theory of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, alongside the comparative literature theory by Wellek and Warren.  The findings show that Mrs. Bennet's obsession with securing beneficial marriages for her daughters mirrors early 19th-century English societal norms, where wedding was crucial for financial security and social status. In contrast, Bu Sri's modern approach stresses individual autonomy and emotional well-being, balancing traditional values with individual preference. This study indicates that promoting individual autonomy, providing dynamic support, and balancing traditions with modern parenting can encourage healthier family dynamics.

Abstract

This research explores the dichotomy of characters in Anna Todd’s After through the lens of binary opposition as proposed by Lois Tyson and the deconstruction approach by Jacques Derrida. The study focuses on the clear demarcation between good and bad characters, epitomized by Tessa Young and Hardin Scott, respectively. Using Tyson’s framework, the binary oppositions within the narrative are identified and analyzed, revealing how these oppositions structure the reader’s understanding of the characters. Derrida’s deconstruction theory is then applied to challenge and destabilize these fixed oppositions, offering a nuanced interpretation of the characters’ complexities. The findings indicate that while Tessa Young is predominantly portrayed as the embodiment of goodness, and Hardin Scott as the epitome of badness, a deeper analysis reveals underlying complexities and contradictions in their characterizations. This study contributes to a richer understanding of character development and thematic depth in contemporary literature. However, through the application of Derrida's deconstruction, the research concludes that these binary oppositions are not absolute. The complex interplay between Tessa and Hardin challenges the rigidity of their characterizations, demonstrating that the boundaries between “good” and “bad” are fluid and subject to reinterpretation. Keywords: after, binary opposition, deconstruction, dichotomy, good and bad.

Abstract

This paper discusses sexual diversity exposed in Andre Aciman’s Call Me by Your Name and Brent Hartinger’s Geography Club. Both novels tell stories about sexual orientation and its impact on the daily lives of the main characters, who are high school students. In Call Me by Your Name, Aciman depicted Elio as a teenager who admires people of the same sex, and in Geography Club, Russell Middle Brook disguises his sexual orientation because he is gay. Using Sociology of Literature as an approach, more specifically queer theory as a means of carrying out queer criticism, this research aims to discuss sexual diversity exposed in these two fictions. It also talks about the heteronormative pressures experienced by the two figures above during their high school years as students who had different sexual orientations. The research results show that although schools and society always emphasize diversity, sexual diversity is not yet accepted. The heteronormative pressure that the experience of Elio and Russel comes from their close environments, such as parents, friends, and school. Elio and Russel need to keep their true sexual identities because showing sexual diversity for high school students is taboo. They also have to keep their sexual orientation to safeguard their lives from rejection and bullying. Selecting the two novels as the data sources helps to understand each text individually and acknowledge how different authors approach similar themes.

In Kerumunan Terakhir  Okky Madasaricompares the lives of women at the top of a mountain and in a big city. Similar to Okky Madasari, Rodolfo Anaya also describes the harmonious life between nature and woman represented by Ultima in Bless Me Ultima. Ultima does not only preserve nature, she also uses nature to cure illness. Abstract

Impian Amerika by Kuntowijoyo tells stories of Indonesian immigrants who came to New York City with different reasons and backgrounds. They settle, move, go to school, work, and live in the United States-especially around the New York City area. There are Javanese, Achenese, Batak, Manado, Sundanese, Minangs, Makassarese, and others. There are various reasons why they decide to settle in this city, but the majority is for advancement, prosperity, and freedom. Some continue their education or study in the United States because of the more advanced education system. Some chose to work as long as they can go and settle in United States because the country is more prosperous than Indonesia. Other chose the United States because they want to be free and adventurous. In addition, this novel also presents ethic problems between Indonesians and other citizen due to multidimensional relationships and the daily lives of Indonesians. The purpose of this study is to scrutinize how the American Dream is understood by immigrants, especially immigrants from Indonesia. This work used qualitative research method and data was collected from Kuntowijoyo’s Impian Amerika. The data was analyzed qualitatively using Marxist literary approach. The result of the study shows that Kuntowijoyo’s Impian Americas hows how material success is not automatically followed by spiritual success. As an ethos, the American Dream is able to offer people to come to America to migrate, work and live there forever and promise that anyone can succeed by working hard regardless of family and social background but American dream can also mislead someone or immigrant if he does not have a strong religious and moral basis.
