Abstract

This study is an analysis of the main character with the aim of showing how the main character responds and describes the problem of self-acceptance that affects her mental health.The analytical method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive analysis method along with the psychoanalytic theory proposed by Sigmund Freud with the study of developmental psychology. The results of the research  show that the level of self-acceptance can affect a person's life. The way the main character responds and describes self-acceptance is by looking back at her past life and embracing it in order to accept herself more as she is so she can move on and live a better life.Keywords: Midnight Library, mental health, self-acceptance and life.

Abstract

Byronic hero is a type of Romantic Hero that was popular in the Romantic period in the 19th century. The purpose of this research is to identify Loki as a Byronic Hero in Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee. This research uses qualitative analysis methods with a structuralism approach, which focused on intrinsic elements of the novel such as character and characterization, conflicts, and symbols. By applying Michael Riffaterres theory of semiotics, this research describes the character traits of Byronic Hero through heuristic and hermeneutic readings on Lokis character describes the meaning of the symbols "godseye mirror" and "norn stones" on Loki's character, and  also matrices and hypograms in the novel. The results of the research prov that Loki is a Byronic Hero in Loki: Where Mischief Lies. Keywords: Byronic Hero; heuristic and hermeneutic readings; matrices; hypograms.

Abstract

Fluency in communication cannot be separated from the influence of presuppositions. The presupposition is something that the speaker assumes as an event before the utterance. This study aims to identify and describe the types of presuppositions and common ground in a question-and-answer session between journalists and President Joe Biden at a press conference of Joe Biden's speech denouncing Russia's invasion of Ukraine. To meet this purpose, the researchers applied George Yule's theory (1996) and utilized the descriptive method with a notetaking technique as a data collection technique where the data source is in the form of a video. The results showed 5 types of presuppositions in 26 presuppositions data from 17 speeches data analyzed.

Abstract

The thesis entitled "The Central Character’s Social Background and Its Relation to Domestic Conflict in Kevin Kwan’s Rich People Problem " is the main topic of this research. The novel itself was published in 2017. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis method by analyzing and describing the central character’s social background and how it is related to the cause of domestic conflicts through the use of intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The results showed that a person's social background affects their life and character which gave rise to domestic conflict, meaning that domestic conflicts can be caused by different social backgrounds even though they come from the same family lineage.  In this particular case, the domestic conflict that occurred because of such condition, was in the form of a fight over the family's main inheritance, namely Tyersall Park.Keywords: social background, central characters, habitus, wealth background

Abstract

Women have often been the ideal target to be culturally and socially constructed within a patriarchal society. This serves as a form of gender inequality that mostly brings harm to them. In this analysis, through mens domination and power over women, these negative social attributes were intentionally as well as politically constructed to put women as ‘deviant. Applying Derridas deconstruction theory, the negative labels could be deconstructed into positive social attributes through a critical analysis on the main character, Okichi in the novel Butterfly in the Wind written by Rei Kimura. The finding posits that Okichi labeled as a comfort woman” or mistress” by the Shimodas society can be re-interpreted or given a new positive meaning as heroic action which was taken to save her family and countrys dignity

Abstract

As a movie character Arthur Fleck, also known as Joker, is represented as a supervillain as well as the archenemy of Batman. He is depicted as a cruel murderer, with a clown-like appearance suffering from mental-illness, who spread the fear and terror in the Gotham city. Using descriptive analysis, characterization and Stephen G. Posts Altruism and Altruistic Love theory by focusing on Fleck as the main character in this film, this paper is trying to see how he develops his characteristics and reveals his altruistic side. Based on the analysis it is revealed that Fleck has a dynamic character. Even though he is represented as a heartless murderer, his altruistic side is specifically disclosed in some certain aspects

Abstract

The practice of living together without marriage is common in some communities. Marriage serves to legalize the relationship between men and women, allowing them to share a home legally. The term "cohabitation" refers to couples who live together without being married. However, cohabitation can lead to various issues, including infidelity, conflicts, and even dangerous situations. This study employs a descriptive analysis method, utilizing library research techniques grounded in Sigmund Freud's developmental theory (psychoanalysis). In the novel The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison, the consequences of cohabitation manifest as infidelity, disputes among characters, and the deterioration of friendships, ultimately leading to murder. Analyzing the novel through intrinsic and extrinsic approaches reveals that the events affecting the character Todd Gilbert directly result from cohabitation. This situation leads to the development of a new self-concept for Todd and significantly influences his attitude in addressing both internal and external conflicts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character dynamics of the central characters in the novel Lord of the Flies to demonstrate the character development of humans when faced with isolated island due to World War II. This research uses descriptive research method with qualitative approach. The data collection technique involves reading Lord of the Floes and look for experts’ data related with character dynamics of the central character. Data are linked to intrinsic elements, including character and characterization, setting, plot, conflict, symbolism, and irony, and relate them to extrinsic studies covering psychoanalytic theory, the life and death instincts theory, and narcissism theory, all three theories proposed by Sigmund Freud. The results of this study show that the character dynamics experienced by the central characters, Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, are dominated by complex psychological and social factors, including the influence of an isolated environment and group tensions. The central characters play their respective roles. Ralph tends to favor the values of order and morality, Jack is influenced by the death instinct and aggression, whole Piggy retains logic and rationality. In conclusion, this analysis shows that under extreme conditions, human character can change. Humans can lose their moral values due to basic primal drives such as the desire of power, fear, and the tendency to act violently. When tensions rise. The moral principles that guide human behavior seem to disappear, so humans tend to fall into destructive behavior that ignores a sense of empathy and civilization.Keywords:  Central Character; Dynamics; Psychoanalysis; Instinct; Morality
