Abstract

This study is intended to guide educators or students who will conduct DNA isolation experiments to prove and view the presence of DNA contained in fruit using a simple method. DNA isolation is a method to obtain or research deoxyribonucleic acid from an organism. The basic principle in DNA isolation is to break or extract a tissue so that a cell extract contains DNA, RNA, and other essential substances will be formed. DNA isolation experiment is intended to determine a simple method of isolating DNA in fruit and to determine the effectiveness of detergents used for DNA isolation. In this experiment, to observe DNA, DNA isolation was carried out on the crushed fruits to form juice from the fruit. Then, make a solution from a mixture of detergent and water. Later, mix the fruit juice with a detergent solution and add salt to it. Once the solution is homogeneous, filter it and add cold ethanol. Then, the DNA strands will appear because of the reaction. The results obtained are influenced by the type of detergent used, the type of fruit used, the alcohol concentration, and the results of the filtering performed.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Prolonged labor remains a significant contributor to maternal and neonatal complications, particularly during the active phase of the first stage of labor. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as labor dance and birth ball exercises, have been proposed to facilitate labor progress by enhancing maternal comfort and promoting effective uterine contractions. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a combined labor dance and birth ball intervention in reducing the duration of the active phase of the first stage of labor. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a post-test-only control group design was conducted among 30 laboring women in the active phase of the first stage of labor. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and assigned to either an intervention group, which received a combination of labor dance and birth ball exercises, or a control group that received standard care. The duration of the active phase was measured using an observation sheet and analyzed using an independent t-test. Result: The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in the duration of the active phase between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.02). Women who received the combined labor dance and birth ball intervention experienced a shorter active phase compared to those in the control group. Conclusion: The combination of labor dance and birth ball exercises is effective in shortening the duration of the active phase of the first stage of labor. This intervention may serve as a safe, feasible, and non-pharmacological alternative to support normal labor progress in maternity care settings.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding is a critical determinant of infant health and development, yet many mothers face challenges that hinder breastfeeding success, particularly in rural settings with limited access to lactation support. Oketani breast massage and lavender essential oil aromatherapy have been explored individually for their potential to improve lactation outcomes. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Oketani breast massage combined with lavender essential oil in enhancing breastfeeding success among postpartum mothers in a rural Indonesian community. Methods: A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used, involving 80 postpartum mothers in Penjalian Village, East Java, Indonesia. Participants received Oketani breast massage and lavender essential oil therapy daily for seven days postpartum. Breastfeeding success was assessed using the LATCH scoring system before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The proportion of mothers achieving a “good” LATCH score increased from 46.25% before the intervention to 72.50% after the intervention. The Wilcoxon test revealed a statistically significant improvement in breastfeeding success (Z = -4.750, p < 0.001), indicating the positive impact of the combined intervention. Conclusion: Oketani breast massage combined with lavender essential oil is an effective, low-cost, and culturally appropriate intervention to enhance breastfeeding success in postpartum mothers. Its implementation in rural communities can serve as a practical strategy to support exclusive breastfeeding practices and improve maternal-infant health outcomes.
