Abstract

Jaulah fi Rubu'I Asia is a travelogue that presents Muhammad Tsabit's journey to a quarter of the Asian continent. His travel notes describe the culture, wonders, and uniqueness found in the countries he visited. The purpose of this study is to analyze the depiction of the world, especially in India, in the book Jaualah fi Rubu'I Asia which written in Arabic, reveal the author's subjectivity to what he experienced during the trip, and reveal the culture of the author and the culture of the area visited and find out the author's reaction or response to the new locations he encountered. The researcher uses Carl Thompson's travel writing theory to study it, which has three basic concepts: reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study are in the form of quotations of phrases, clauses, or sentences in the book Jualah fi Rubu'I Asia. The data collection technique uses the read-write technique. At the same time, the data analysis technique uses the Miles & Huberman analysis model. The result of this research is that the world reported by the author is expressed through the depiction of culture in various aspects. In describing the culture, the author gives his subjectivity through the assumptions and feelings he expresses. Therefore, the author is classified as a romantic traveler. The author uses a colonial discourse strategy in his writing, where the other is both the inferior and superior party.

Abstract

Background: Arabic songs have recently gained popularity among Indonesian audiences. Nancy Ajram, a Lebanese artist, is one of the most well-known singers whose songs are widely appreciated. The translation of Arabic song lyrics into English involves complex decisions regarding linguistic fidelity, emotional resonance, and cultural adaptation. Purpose: This research aims to identify the translation techniques used in each version and to analyze their implications, thereby providing a deeper understanding of how meaning, emotion, and cultural nuance are conveyed in song lyrics. Method: A qualitative descriptive approach with textual analysis was employed. Data were drawn from 17 representative verses from the original Arabic lyrics and their English counterparts on genius.com and lyricstranslate.com. Results and Discussion: To maintain naturalness and emotional impact in English, dynamic equivalence predominates, with the total usage rate 69% of both translations. Meanwhile, formal equivalence is applied selectively, accounting for 31% of both translations to preserve structural fidelity in specific phrases. The key differences between the two translations involve lexical shifts, syntactic restructuring, and cultural adaptations that alter connotations while still maintaining the overarching themes. Conclusions and Implications: This study reveals a marked preference for dynamic over formal equivalence, prioritizing emotional depth and cultural nuance over syntactic fidelity. This confirms that translating lyrics of romantic distress necessitates an interlingual approach to preserve the source text’s affective impact. Although offering a novel comparative perspective, the research is limited by its single-song scope and the exclusion of musical dimensions and audience reception.

Abstract

Satirical utterances in audiovisual texts convey criticism through implicit meanings, rhetorical contrasts, and contextual cues, making them vulnerable to shifts in cross-cultural subtitling. This exploratory case study examines how Arabic satirical implicatures are preserved, reformulated, or weakened in the official Indonesian subtitles of From the Ashes: The Pit. The data comprised 23 satirical utterances identified through exhaustive criterion-based sampling of the entire film. The Arabic dialogue was manually transcribed, verified by an Arabic-language specialist, aligned with scene timestamps, and compared with the Indonesian subtitles. Analysis combined Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies, Simpson’s model of satirical discourse, Zabalbeascoa’s functional approach, Relevance Theory, and audiovisual constraints. Four strategies were identified: transfer (11), paraphrase (9), condensation (2), and resignation (1). The corpus included irony (10), cynicism (7), and sarcasm (6). The findings suggest that satirical implicatures were preserved when the subtitle retained the target of criticism, evaluative stance, and sufficient verbal or audiovisual cues. Paraphrase and condensation could also maintain satire when formal changes preserved these functional elements, whereas resignation produced the clearest contextual ambiguity. These findings are limited to this single-film exploratory corpus.
