Abstract

The aim of the research was to improve students' ability in reading text by using metacognitive strategy. The subjects of the study was the first semester of the students of STIE ALWASHLIYAH SIBOLGA 2020.They were 30 students. The researcher provided a textual reading media with metacognitive strategy learning methods to help students know about the reading text so that students more active and understood and then the teaching and learning activities efficiently help the students and also more fun. This type of research is experimental research. The research design used is to use statistical groups. With the value of Ttest 124,103 while Ttable 2.0106, from these values we can conclude 1) Method of Metacognitive Strategy and media in reading text can improve students' ability in reading skills 2) Method of Metacognitive Strategy and media in reading text have an important role in improving the students’ abilityin reading skill. Keywords:        Reading, Metacognitive Strategy,Text

Abstract

The study discusses how this Prophet stories writing is structured and its linguistic features by using descriptive method. The writing of Prophet stories is started by an introduction, followed by body of essay and the final paragraph is the conclusion as the closing of the story. The introduction provides some general idea related to the topic discussed then the body of essay discusses the specific ideas of the topic or the sequence of events occurred in the story. The last paragraph of the story is the conclusion provides suggestions, offer and commands to the people as the readers because there are some valuable moral lessons to take based on the ideas/meaning of the stories of the Prophet. Based on the linguistic features, the stories of the Prophet mainly use some tenses. Simple Past is used to describe the past events/activities occurred in the era of the Prophet and Present tense is used to describe fact or general truth and nowadays situation. Besides, the meaning or ideas of the stories are written mostly in statement (declarative sentence) in active voice but a few sentences are written in passive voice. Some ideas are also written in interrogative sentence (questions) found in introduction and imperative sentence (command) in the conclusion paragraph. Keywords:  Rhetorical Structures, Linguistic Features, Islamic Prophet Stories

Abstract

This research examined the modification of the concept of CTL (Contextual Teaching and Learning) in English for Tourism lectures in English literature studies at the Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah University, Medan. English For Tourism lectures involved theoretical and practical training in their implementation. One important theory taught to students was about how to communicate well and correctly in the world of tourism. Students often experienced difficulties in communicating and understanding various very diverse cultures in Indonesia in particular and in foreign countries in general. Language and culture learning not only provided an understanding of the definition but students were required to be able to find their own knowledge. Lecturers must have concepts that spur students to be able to think critically and creatively. One of the appropriate learning concepts for teaching English for Tourism courses was the concept of CTL (Contextual Teaching And Learning). The concept made it easier for students to understand all the theories that were conveyed during the lecture. CTL made innovative, creative and effective learning. CTL modification in English for Tourism lectures could make lectures more creative, and require students to think more critically. This meant they were encouraged to connect between the materials taught with everyday life in the world of tourism. Keywords:  Modification, CTL, English for Tourism

Abstract

The study deals with improving students’ vocabulary mastery through watching English films. The formulations of the problem are (1)Is watching English films effective in increasing students’ vocabulary? (2) What  English film can improve students’ vocabulary?. The purpose of the study is (1) to find out the effectiveness of watching English film can increase students’ vocabulary. (2) to know kind of English film can improve students’ vocabulary. The sample of this research is forty students from the second  yearsstudents of SMA Ksatria Medan. The technique of the collecting of the data by using questionare and test. Abstract

This research examines the application of infographic media and innovative learning videos as an effort to improve the English language scientific article writing skills of students at Harapan University, Medan. Infographics are information media presented in text form, and combined with several visual elements such as images, illustrations, graphs and so on. The advantage of infographic learning media is that it has an attractive appearance, so learning is not boring. It helps students to know what being studied. Infographics and innovative learning videos are the right solution to overcome the problems faced by Harapan University Medan students who are often bored and not enthusiastic about following the learning process, especially regarding English. Quasi Experimental type (quasi-experiment) using Non-equivalent Control Group Design was used in this research. Today's students have experienced a lot of lagging behind, especially in terms of techniques for writing good and correct scientific papers. In fact, this need must always be realized in empowering students for the benefit of society. Therefore, students must be given sufficient provisions in order to prepare for their future, especially in scientific transformation related to good and correct scientific writing techniques.
