Abstract

Indonesian elementary school students show their motivation to write. A kind of books written by and for children of their age, commonly termed as Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) ‘although young we have writing works’, are nowdays available at bookstores. These books can further motivate other children to compose. To accommodate this motivation, the language center of Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta held a writing contest for elementary school students in Surakarta and the surrounding area. Thirtyfour students participated the contest, thus 34 texts from such a competition were collected as the object of analysis in this study to see the quality of the text structure as well as the text texture of the texts. The analysis on the text structure shows that several texts are arranged in a single kind of genre. However, the other texts are composed in multi-genre—meaning that each text in this kind demonstrates the features of a genre, but it accomodates other short texts with different genre. The former is named as a text with a macro genre, whereas the latter are termed as texts with a micro one. Meanwhile, the choice of words and the exploitatio of grammatical construction for the clauses of most of the texts shows weaknesses. Many academic and technical terms as well as nominalization are exploited. In addition, several texts have metaphorical words in them. This phenomenon influences the readability level of the texts. Furthermore, many clauses are constructed in complex arrangement, while some otheSrs incomplete in terms of grammar substances. This, therefore, add the negative quality of the texts. Several systemic strategies are provided to make the texts better. They can be effective models for the young writers as well as for the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject at elementary schools.Keywords: Genre, Cerita, Gramatika, Teks

Abstract

This research attempts to develop Martin’s & Rose’s concept of conjunctive relation (CR) analysis, in which the external and internal roles of conjunction do not include the other two types of conjunctive relation markers such as continuative and logical metaphor. Relying on more than twenty international journal articles, the research findings exhibit that certain types of continuative and logical metaphor can not only operate externally to connect events and qualities but they can also function internally to organize evidences and arguments in texts. As a result, not only a new role of internal continuative and logical metaphor can be confirmed, but the findings will also introduce an elaborated development of classifying CR in general. The emergence of the internal role of continuative and logical metaphor leads to a more elaborate way of connecting and grouping clauses into different units of discourse. In this way, they will also be able to demonstrate how texts can be built up through clauses, phases, and stages in a particular genre, without the need to be interpreted in conjunctions. HIGHLIGHTS: This article attempt to find a new way of classifying internal and external conjunctive relation that is comprised of conjunction, continuative and metaphor. Martin (2007) argues that only conjunction that perform external and inter. This article exhibits that actually external and internal roles can also be performed by continuative and metaphor. Some types of logical metaphors and continuations can not only operate externally to connect events and qualities, but can also function internally to organize evidence and arguments in a text.

Abstract

Rumah Atsiri Indonesia (RAI) adalah destinasi wisata yang mengusung konsep integrated destination, berkomitmen memberikan pengalaman menyeluruh kepada pengunjung, khususnya dalam memberi edukasi tentang tanaman atsiri dan manfaatnya bagi masyarakat. Salah satu sasaran penting dari program edukasi tersebut adalah anak-anak. Dalam upaya meningkatkan pengetahuan anak mengenai tanaman atsiri, sekaligus meningkatkan minat baca mereka, Rumah Atisiri Indonesia bekerja sama dengan Grup Riset English for Creative Industries, dari D3 Bahasa Inggris, UNS, dengan cara menyusun novel grafis bilingual. Hal ini atas pertimbangan keprihatinan terhadap rendahnya tingkat minat baca masyarakat Indonesia menurut UNESCO, yaitu 0.001%. Menyusun novel grafis bilingual dipilih sebagai program kerja Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat dengan tujuan menarik minat anak-anak untuk membaca cerita anak yang diwarnai dengan ilustrasi menarik, sekaligus menjadi media untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini dimulai dari mengkurasi teks narasi karya mahasiswa D3 Bahasa Inggris, sebagai upaya integrasi mata kuliah dengan kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat. Teks narasi tersebut ditulis dengan tema pengenalan karakter tanaman atsiri dan ditulis dalam dwi Bahasa. Setelah terseleksi teks narasi, selanjutnya adalah membuat ilustrasi yang relevan. Langkah terakhir adalah penyuntingan naskah dan penyesuaian dengan ilustrasi, atau penyuntingan tata letak teks dan ilustrasi. Hasil akhir yang berupa buku cetak novel grafis ini kemudian akan dipajang di salah satu sudut RAI yang mudah diakses oleh pengunjung untuk membaca karya tersebut.
