Abstract

This research attempts to depicts the language used in Indonesian television, especially in news, editorial, and talk show in post reform era. The main issue in this research is the language used in Indonesian television contributes to the formation of democracy in this country. To answer the question, this research applies Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) that is able to portray the social processes and the language that is representation of the social processes, including their genres and registers. The results show that news exploits recount whereas editorial and talk show employ discussion genre. The recount and discussion genres in news and editorial and talk show accelerate the atmosphere of democratization in Indonesia. News provides facts and phenomena whereas editorial and talk show discusses them.  However, in the level of register, editorial and talk show exploit the use of more raised evaluation that a number of communication experts believe that Indonesian editorial and talk show go beyond the democracy level or are still provocative. Keywords: Bahasa Demokratis, Genre, Register, Appraisal

Abstract

This research examines the two factors which effect on the raising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. It aimed at delineating the potential effect of these two factors on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference of undergraduate students majoring in English department of State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung and PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. 213 Javanese undergraduate students were selected based on two-step purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used observation and questionares in which the participants answered a set of 12 open-ended questions to measure the students’ term along with educational institution and Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. To analyze the data, t-test on correlation and coefficient as well as linier stepwise multiple regressions were conducted through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Data analysis indicated that the independent variables significantly correlated with Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference. In addition, multiple regressions analysis specified different higher institution as the main contributing variable and students’ term as the second one on the arising of Indonesian interference. It also showed that students of English departments of state Islamic institution of Tulungagung got higher scores on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference than those of PGRI teacher training college of Tulungagung. The reason may refer to the supporting environment that is higher language exposure. The results highlighted the longer the students’ term they have, the lower score on the arising of Indonesian morphology-syntactical interference they produce.

Abstract

Abstract

This research is aimed to identify the gender biased expression toward the role of woman in Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek. Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek was published in 2012. It tells about the history of cigarette in Indonesia through the perspective of the life of one of cigarette producer in building his own business. Gadis Kretek also depicts the Javanese culture as the background of the story, in which patriarchal system is applied in every life of Javanese people. The data were collected by using documentation analysis intake-note method. There are 45 gender biased expressions found in Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek. Those expression were classified into 4 (four) categories of inequality of gender stated by Fakih, namely gender and subordination, gender and stereotype, gender and violence, and gender and workload. The result shows that in Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek, woman is described as the second class in Javanese culture. The Javanese culture described by Ratih Kumala strictly applies patriarchal system. Patriarchal system refers to the system in which the men have the authority over the women. The women have only domestic role, while the men have public role. Therefore, it results in the gender inequality. There are 45 gender biased expressions found in Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek. Those expressions fit not only in one category of gender inequality, but also in two or three categories. The most gender equality expressions found in Ratih Kumala’s Gadis Kretek are the gender and stereotype. Gender and stereotype refers to the prejudice toward the women attitudes, women role in society and women role in family.

Abstract

The research dealt with attitudes toward sexism. It aimed to know the translation technique and quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. It deployed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from a novel titled Gone Girl and the copy of the novel in Indonesian translation through content analysis and focus group discussion. The data were analyzed through domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis to reveal cultural value. The research indicates that translation techniques determine its qualities. It reveals that established equivalence results in the good quality of translation while the generalization, discursive creation, explicitation, modulation, literal translation, particularization, and description reflect quite good and bad quality of the translation. Moreover, the application of generalization and explicitation results in non-sexist translation. Consequently, the translator becomes less sexist than writer and gives readers different effect with the original one. However, this is affected by some factors; the translator’s subjectivity, translator’s competence, linguistic characteristic differences, and social-cultural differences.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the translation techniques used by the subtitler to translate modality orientation and the impact of the translation techniques on the modality orientation shifts in “The Jungle Book” movie subtitle. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research were words, phrases, and clauses as the marker of modality orientation in the movie, and translation techniques used by the subtitler. Modality orientation was obtained through content analysis based on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory as proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). Then, translation techniques were obtained through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The findings show that the subtitler uses seven techniques to translate modality orientation. They have established equivalence, modulation, discursive creation with established equivalence, deletion, transposition, discursive creation, and reduction with established equivalence. The subtitler uses established equivalence to translate orientation that produces same category, value, form, and orientation. Deletion technique, modulation, and creation discursive with established equivalence cause the loss of modality in the target language. Applying modulation, transposition, discursive creation, and reduction with established equivalence techniques make a shift on the modality orientation and also produce different meaning in the target language. The change of value in modality in the target language is caused by the use of modulation and reduction with established equivalence technique by the subtitler.
