Abstract

Indonesian elementary school students show their motivation to write. A kind of books written by and for children of their age, commonly termed as Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) ‘although young we have writing works’, are nowdays available at bookstores. These books can further motivate other children to compose. To accommodate this motivation, the language center of Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta held a writing contest for elementary school students in Surakarta and the surrounding area. Thirtyfour students participated the contest, thus 34 texts from such a competition were collected as the object of analysis in this study to see the quality of the text structure as well as the text texture of the texts. The analysis on the text structure shows that several texts are arranged in a single kind of genre. However, the other texts are composed in multi-genre—meaning that each text in this kind demonstrates the features of a genre, but it accomodates other short texts with different genre. The former is named as a text with a macro genre, whereas the latter are termed as texts with a micro one. Meanwhile, the choice of words and the exploitatio of grammatical construction for the clauses of most of the texts shows weaknesses. Many academic and technical terms as well as nominalization are exploited. In addition, several texts have metaphorical words in them. This phenomenon influences the readability level of the texts. Furthermore, many clauses are constructed in complex arrangement, while some otheSrs incomplete in terms of grammar substances. This, therefore, add the negative quality of the texts. Several systemic strategies are provided to make the texts better. They can be effective models for the young writers as well as for the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject at elementary schools. Keywords: Genre, Cerita, Gramatika, Teks

Abstract

This article aims at describing how women domination in domestic sphere is represented and exploited—whether to promote feminism or to sustain patriarchy in sitcom Suami-Suami Takut Istri”and what social dan political consequences of such representation have on women's image, men's image, and their relations. It is presented descriptive qualitatively applying textual approach and feminist cultural studies. The analysis shows that women domination is represented and exploited to sustain patriarchal ideology by negatively constructing women power to dominate not as a real domination, in which women can command respect from their domination. The way the women show domination is also constructed negatively, that is by engaging in all kinds of domestic violence. The análysis also shows that such negative construction results in negative image of women and gender relations, but maintains the positive image of men. Thus, in this way, patriarchy is sustained in sitcom Suami-Suami Takut Istri.

Abstract

The representation of Latinas in America has always been stapled with stereotypical traits since their initial appearance in the mainstream media because the representation is depicted from the point of view of Anglo-Americans. It is then intriguing to analyze the representation of Latinas in the American police procedural comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine which its Anglo-American producers claimed to be counter-stereotypical to the existing Latina representation in the American mainstream media. Using Roland Barthes' Semiotics, the analysis shows that these characters defy traditional roles by being depicted as competent, assertive professionals with legal citizenship. The findings show that these characters defy traditional roles by being depicted as competent, assertive professionals with legal citizenship. They also diverge from sexualized stereotypes through their portrayal as authoritative figures, avoiding overly sexualized tropes in speech and attire. This portrayal offers a counter-narrative to existing media stereotypes of Latina women.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the self-representation of sensuous female influencers in Indonesia, specifically a 20-year-old female Javanese influencer who lives in Surakarta, on Instagram, and how the influencer publicly presents herself in front of the audience. Relying on Goffman’s Dramaturgical approach, this study provides thorough insights into the frontstage and backstage behavior of the sensuous female influencer and the representation of the influencer on the frontstage. Employing Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic triadic model (1931), the data obtained from Instagram were analyzed by understanding the representamen, the interpretant, and the object of the data. Then, to gain a more detailed understanding, the data collected from in-depth interviews were also scrutinized. This study shows that there is an act of rebellion of being against society's norms of modesty as the influencer constantly acts in a sexualized manner in public and daily activity. While previous studies mostly examine the phenomenon of the sexualized manner of women in hyper-sexualized cultures/Western cultures, this study provides an understanding of the sexualized manner of a sensuous Javanese female influencer in the area where people do not find self-sexualization behavior as common or prevalent.

Abstract

The supervisory practices, particularly in undergraduate thesis writing, have not received sufficient attention, specifically regarding their impact on EFL students writing apprehension and the potential gender differences in these dynamics. To fulfil this gap, this study examines the path coefficients among supervisory problem dimensions (research interests, different expectations, limited support, personal relationships, personal conflicts), writing self-efficacy, academic writing competence, toward writing apprehension, focusing on the potential gender differences among EFL students. A Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis was performed on a total of 219 EFL students undertaking their undergraduate thesis writing. The study revealed supervisory problems through mediated variables of academic writing competence and writing self-efficacy influence writing apprehension (=0.214 and =0.509, respectively; p 0.000 for both). Furthermore, the multi-group analysis uncovered notable gender differences. In contrast with male students, in which only a few paths were statistically significant, all paths were found to be significant for female students. In particular, the path from supervisory problem to academic writing competence had the strongest impact on female students, indicating the heightened sensitivity to supervisory problems related to the students writing apprehension. These novel findings shed light on the gender difference impact on the academic writing process, and a more pronounced impact from supervisory problems on their writing apprehension frequently happened to female students. Accordingly, these findings highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing those differences in instructional strategies to promote a more encouraging and productive learning environment.
