Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have an important role in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration. This study aims to determine the blue carbon potential of mangroves on the coast of West Muna. The research was conducted by measuring mangroves density using the quadratic transect method (10 m x 10 m) and measuring stem diameter (DBH). The values of carbon stock and carbon absorption were analyzed based on the biomass values calculated using the allometric equation of each mangrove species. The results showed that the total biomass, stock, and carbon absorption of mangroves on the coastal areas of West Muna were 211.9 tones/ha, 99.21 tones C/ha and 363.77 tones CO2-eq/ha. The largest contributors to total biomass, stock, and carbon sequestration are R. stylosa and S. alba species. In contrast, the species with the lowest contributors are B. cylindrica and B. gymnorrhiza. Differences in the ability to store carbon in each species are influenced by the structure of the mangrove community, including density, stem diameter and root type. Mangroves of the Rhizophora species have good carbon absorption capabilities. Besides that, it can also adapt well to the environment, so it is very good to be managed and bred in climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract

Aquaponics is a system that integrates fish cultivation with plant cultivation in a mutualistic symbiotic manner. This system uses wastewater from fish as nutrients for plants, while the plants clean the water through root filtration. This paper aims to analyze the efficiency of aquaponic systems in fish and plant production, with a focus on case studies conducted in urban environments. The analysis results show that the aquaponics system in fish and plant production in urban environments can achieve a high level of efficiency. This system is more efficient than conventional cultivation methods bein terms of water use cause water can be reused and not wasted. Efficiency in energy use is also visible because aquaponic systems reduce energy requirements for water circulation and environmental maintenance of plants. In addition, analysis of the nutritional efficiency of the aquaponic system shows that nutrients from fish waste can be utilized optimally by plants so that the use of additional fertilizer can be reduced. This has positive implications in terms of cost savings and reduced environmental impact. This case study shows that aquaponic systems are a potential solution to increase the efficiency of fish and plant production, especially in urban environments where land and resources are limited. Apart from production efficiency, this system also has additional benefits, such as local food production, reduction of organic waste, and development of sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Marine debris in the waters has become a significant environmental issue, threatening the balance and function of coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangrove ecosystems. Poka Beach in the inner Ambon Bay is facing the accumulation of waste from local activities and external currents. To address this issue, the Community Service Program from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Pattimura University organised a coastal cleanup and mangrove rehabilitation at Poka Beach, involving students, the community, and related institutions. This program aims to raise awareness about the threat of marine debris and the role of mangroves in the sustainability of coastal and marine environments and ecosystems. The Community Service activities include site surveys, coordination with relevant parties, beach clean-up actions, and replanting mangrove seedlings. This activity successfully collected various marine debris accumulated at Poka Beach, such as bottles, food packaging, and household items. Amounting 180 kg of plastic waste was sent to the waste bank for recycling. As many as 150 mangrove seedlings were planted at a distance of 1 meter along the 200-meter stretch of Poka Beach. The sustainability of similar programs through education, conservation, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration must be carried out to change community behaviour in proper plastic waste management and create cleaner and healthier coastal and marine environments.
