Abstract

This paper shows the function of a narrative text-based module to develop students reading skills. The research design is R & D (Research and Development), focusing on students' practicality. The researcher tried to find out the analysis and the practicality of the module in designing and implementing reading in a narrative text based-module. The sample was selected from second-semester students at the English Department of FKIP UIR. The students were given a test to be answered to find out the practicality, which consisted of pre-test and post-test. The module provides exercises that encourage the students to develop their reading comprehension. This module combines summary and references in every unit of the module. This module provides a formative test with an answer key at the end of each chapter.

Abstract

The implementation of e-learning systems has resulted in new forms of pedagogical compulsion. The lack of planning stunned the lecturer, who may have taken impulsive moves to set up a range of media for their online sessions. This article explores the potential of digital technology to revitalize the Islamic University of Riau in English learning facilities and improve student learning outcomes. This study applies descriptive and qualitative research techniques to activate the opportunities contained in mobile applications for the benefit of learning English. Participants in this study were 25 ESP of second-semester law students at the Islamic University of Riau. Data were collected in two stages taking notes and a questionnaire to ascertain the extent of the study's outcomes and to explore Lecturer facilities and controls implemented in learning English through asynchronous learning with mobile learning. Findings show that reviving WhatsApp by offering student-planned activities improves students' English proficiency. The result was to create activities that encourage students to take a positive role and encourage their courage to speak English because the WhatsApp application can support activities and prepare students to take an active role.

Abstract

The use of audio-visual components in educational materials has received a lot of attention due to the emphasis on efficient language learning methods. This study aims to investigate the innovation of audio-visual language learning media in the creation of cutting-edge audio-visual language learning materials and to analyze how it affects language learning and student engagement. The sample consisted of 25 students from second-year students majoring in English Department of Faculty and Education class B at Islamic University of Riau during the academic year 2022-2023. In order to gain a better understanding of the experiences, preferences, and suggestions for improvement of the learners, qualitative data was obtained through note-taking and observation. The results of this study help students understand the materials using audio-visual language learning and offers helpful suggestions for students, creators, and multimedia projects on how to successfully incorporate audio-visual components into language learning resources. The findings of this study could help motivate students and produce effective and interesting learning materials for language learners.

Abstract

Literasi sastra yang melibatkan masyarakat adalah salah satu aspek penting. Namun, antusias terhadap literasi sastra tersebut rendah khususnya pada generasi z saat ini. Untuk itu, tim abdimas Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia FKIP UIR melakukan kegiatan pelatihan menulis puisi di SMPN 1 Tualang dengan tujuan untuk mengembangkan literasi sastra.  Kegiatan pelatihan dilaksanakan dengan metode pelatihan yang melibatkan demonstrasi dan percontohan untuk memberikan pengalaman langsung kepada siswa dalam menulis puisi. Hal ini diharapkan dapat mengatasi kendala rendahnya minat dan pemahaman siswa terhadap sastra. Rubrik penilaian sederhana digunakan untuk mengevaluasi karya siswa, mencakup aspek-aspek seperti judul puisi, ekspresi emosi, imajinasi dan kreativitas, ketepatan penggunaan bahasa, struktur dan rima, keterkaitan dengan tema, originalitas, tata bahasa dan kaidah puisi, pesan yang disampaikan, dan keseluruhan kesan. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan sejumlah siswa memiliki kemampuan baik dalam beberapa aspek penulisan puisi, sementara beberapa siswa perlu meningkatkan keterampilan tertentu. Pelatihan ini memberikan dampak positif pada siswa kelas IX.6, meningkatkan minat terhadap sastra, dan merangsang kreativitas dalam menulis puisi. Kepala sekolah dan tim abdimas melihat kegiatan ini sebagai langkah awal yang baik dalam membangun minat sastra di kalangan siswa SMPN 1 Tualang. Kesimpulannya, pelatihan menulis puisi ini berhasil meningkatkan literasi sastra siswa dan memberikan kontribusi positif terhadap pendidikan sastra di Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of English language learning based on the pedagogical grammar approach at Institut Agama Islam Diniyyah Pekanbaru. The purpose of the study was to explore how this approach enhances students' understanding and application of English grammar in communication. The research aimed to identify effective strategies, challenges, and the overall impact of pedagogical grammar on language proficiency. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing classroom observations, interviews with instructors, and student feedback to analyze the effectiveness of the pedagogical grammar framework. Lesson materials were designed to integrate grammatical concepts into communicative contexts, ensuring that students could apply rules in real-life language use. Data were collected from English language classes and analyzed to determine students' progress, engagement, and comprehension of grammatical structures. The findings indicate that incorporating pedagogical grammar significantly improved students’ grammatical accuracy and confidence in communication. The approach helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical usage, fostering better retention and application of language rules. However, challenges such as limited instructional time and varying student proficiency levels were observed. Teachers reported that explicit grammar instruction, combined with contextualized practice, contributed to more effective learning outcomes. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of pedagogical grammar in English language learning, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving students’ grasp of grammar for communication. It suggests that future training should focus on equipping educators with adaptable strategies to address diverse learning needs, ensuring a more comprehensive and student-centered approach to English instruction.
