Abstract

People experience a natural aging process that causes changes in physical, biological and psychological conditions. These changes can lead to depression. Sensory stimulation in group therapy is used to provide sensory stimulation to the senses in order to express what is felt so it can help in reducing the symptoms of depression. This study aims to determine the effect of sensory stimulation group therapy on the level of depression seen from the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) score. The study was a one group pretest-posttest design with a sample size of 40. The research instrument used the GDS-30. Sensory stimulation group therapy was given 8 times. The characteristics of the research results were dominated by female samples, middle adulthood age category, non-working category and marital status still having a partner. Wilcoxon test p = 0.000 means p-value < a (0.05) indicates that sensory stimulation group therapy affects the GDS score. Sensory stimulation group therapy has an effect on reducing GDS scores because some of the activities provided are able to maintain individual sensory function and the implementation of group therapy has a positive effect on social life.

Abstract

Cognitive decline is a common condition among older adults that may affect memory, attention, and functional independence. Non-pharmacological interventions, particularly activity-based approaches, are increasingly recommended to maintain cognitive function. Board game–based cognitive stimulation has emerged as a promising, engaging, and accessible intervention within occupational therapy practice. This study aimed to examine the effect of a modified board game–based cognitive stimulation program on cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. A total of 50 pre-elderly and older adults were recruited using purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Cognitive function was measured using the Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-Ina) before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of a modified board game program conducted over eight sessions, each lasting 30–60 minutes, integrating cognitive tasks across multiple domains. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in cognitive function after the intervention (p = 0.000, p < 0.05). Participants demonstrated increased scores across multiple cognitive domains following the modified board game–based cognitive stimulation program. The modified board game–based intervention was effective in improving cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. This approach offers a practical, low-cost, and engaging strategy that can be implemented in community and occupational therapy settings to support cognitive health and functional independence in aging populations.

Abstract

Background: Declines in balance ability and mobility are major factors that increase the risk of falls and reduce independence among community-dwelling older adults. Exercise programs targeting balance strategy exercises can improve postural control, while occupational therapy–based home programs help translate these improvements into meaningful daily activities. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of balance strategy exercises combined with an occupational therapy–based home program on functional mobility among community-dwelling older adults. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design involving 48 older adults living in RW VIII, Kemiri Village, Kebakkramat, Karanganyar. Functional mobility was measured using the Four Square Step Test. The intervention consisted of three stages of balance strategy exercises, including ankle strategy exercises, hip strategy exercises, and stepping strategy exercises, combined with an occupational therapy–based home program delivered according to a structured intervention module. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test after the normality assumption was confirmed using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Results: The results of the paired t-test indicated a significant difference before and after the intervention (p < 0.05). An improvement in Four Square Step Test scores was observed following the balance strategy exercise and occupational therapy–based home program intervention, with a mean difference of 1.372. The combined intervention significantly improved functional mobility among older adults (p = 0.000). Most participants belonged to the elderly age group (76%), and 80% of the participants were female. Conclusion: The findings indicate that balance strategy exercises combined with an occupational therapy–based home program have a significant effect on improving functional mobility among community-dwelling older adults.
