Abstract

It is time for Indonesia's golden generation to be filled with talented human beings with humanist souls. Of course this is a challenge that is not easy to realize, so it is necessary to contribute thoughts in constructing the idea of humanist education so that it becomes a reality in the future. The purpose of this research is to examine Paulo Friere's humanist pedagogy and its relevance to Buddhist religious education. This research is expected to contribute comprehensive knowledge and ideas in building a humanism-based education system in Indonesia. This research uses literature study and Miles and Huberman analysis method to analyze the collected data, data reduction, data presentation, and in-depth conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that there is a relevance between Paulo Friere's pedagogy and Buddhist education, both of which emphasize the principle of humanism in educating without involving elements of oppression and focusing more on the learning process as the main key to understanding social reality. Both have strong similarities about the purpose of education that leads to critical awareness and enlightenment of students achieved as the ultimate goal of education. Both also have similarities in viewing the position of teachers and students as an equal relationship and both complement each other.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the implementation of Charles Taylor’s theory of recognition within the context of multicultural education at Bina Kasih Christian High School in Jambi, Indonesia. Methodology: This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo 12 software. Tools include audio recorders, field notes, and school policy documents. Main Findings: The school implements recognition-based strategies such as interfaith dialogue, inclusive curriculum design, and community engagement. However, discrepancies remain between policy and practice, with stereotypes still influencing student interactions. The school’s religious identity influences how recognition is applied, requiring careful balancing of institutional and student values. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a new application of Taylor’s theory of recognition in an Indonesian educational setting, which is rarely explored. It advances current knowledge by linking philosophical recognition theory with practical multicultural education, offering insights for inclusive policy and curriculum development.

Abstract

This article explores the crisis narrative surrounding the erosion of democracy in Indonesia, with a particular emphasis on political and ethical responsibilities. It examines the prevailing consensus on the consequences, factors, and conceptualization of democracy, especially concerning political trust and ethical governance. The discussion underscores how democracy evolves by deconstructing and reshaping societal structures, drawing on Kantian philosophy and the core pillars of democratic society. The paper highlights the inherent flaws in democratic principles, demonstrating how these imperfections permit varying degrees of freedom within societal practices. It advocates for the value of cultivating a culture of open, public discourse aboutcollective societal objectives. However, it also points out that the actual practice of lawmaking, implementation, and enforcement often deviates from its doctrinal ideals, particularly when the law’s purported impartiality contrasts with its impact on marginalized communities. These inconsistencies are examined as outcomes of the exercise of political power, illustrating that the law is shaped by political morality and legitimacy rather than being wholly independent. Furthermore, the article delves into the decline of democracy by engaging in dialogue about the process of its deterioration, rather than simply questioning the reasons behind it. This study also explores democracy and philosophy both in theory and practice, framing law as a reflective inquiry into the democratic process. Ultimately, it advocates for the political concepts of democracy to be subjected to scientific analysis and validation.
