Abstract

This paper will present the results of the study of circumstantial relational process clauses in scientific texts, especially in mechanical engineering ones.  This study is aimed to identify the relational process occurring in Circumstantial relational process clauses and analyze the lexical verbs realizing the relational processes. To conduct the study, three mechanical engineering textbooks used as references by Mechanical Engineering Students of Politeknik Negeri Bandung (Polban) were used as the source for collecting the data. The method used in this study was qualitative one and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework was applied to analyze the data. The results showed attributive relational process occur more frequently than identifying one. The attributive relational process was realized by various lexical verbs. The account of this will be presented in the rest of the his paper. Key words: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), circumstantial clauses, function, structure, identifying process, attributive process

Abstract

This paper focuses of this paper aimsis possessive relational process clauses which is a type of relational process clauses in which relational processes work. Threepoints concerning possessive relational process clauses are discussed in this paper. First, the relational process type which is dominant possessed by possessive relational process clauses. Second, the lexical verbs which realize the dominant type of relational process. The last, the roles played by possessive relational process clauses. The data for this study were taken from Electrical Circuit Theory and Technology, Fundamentals of Electronics Circuits, Electronics Devices, Flow Version, and A Textbook of Electrical Technology, all of which are used as references by  Electronics Engineering students of PoliteknikNegeri Bandung. To analyse the data, Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was employed. The results showed that possessive relational process clauses in scientific texts operate solely on attributive relational process. The attributive relational process is realized by lexical verbs have, consist, include, make which represent the possessive relational process clauses as Classification, Composition and Feature.

Abstract

This paper deals with how a structure is construed in engineering texts. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the realization of structure viewed from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The method used in this study was a qualitative one. The data were obtained from two engineering textbooks functioning as references. Analyzing the data by applying SFL reveals that the structure is construed by relational process clauses, especially circumstantial relational clauses. The relational process belongs to attributive ones realized by various lexical verbs: support, assemble, attach, fasten, and bolt. Whereas, the circumstantial elements which represent Attribute semantically serves as Means and Place.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with lexical density in spoken and written news on BBC News. The purpose of this study is to investigate the lexical density found in spoken and written news regarding the Afghanistan and Taliban conflict broadcasted by BBC. The method applied in this study was a qualitative method. The data consist of five spoken news taken from the BBC YouTube channel and five written news obtained from the BBC news website. The results show that generally, the average lexical density levels of both spoken and written news tend to be the same, that is, higher than 50%. Specifically, spoken news has an average lexical density level of 52.15% while written news has an average lexical density of 55.05%. Meanwhile, the lexical items which influence the density of the texts are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs with the noun to be dominant.
