Abstract

This research is entitled “Inclusion Strategies Used by The United States Newspapers Published in COCA in Representing Islam”. The data of this research are sentences containing inclusion strategies in the news related to Islam, and those news are taken from the United States newspapers published in Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The objectives of this research are to describe and analyze the inclusion strategies used by the United States newspapers published in COCA in representing Islam. The analysis of this research was done by using qualitative and descriptive research methods proposed by Nassaji (2015). This study uses the theory of inclusion strategies proposed by Van Leeuwen (2008). This study shows that the use of inclusion strategies such as differentiation-indifferentiation, nomination-identification, abstraction-objectivation, determination-indetermination, and association-dissociation are commonly used by US newspapers in representing Islam as a social actor in the news. The use of inclusion strategies mostly appear in negative news relating to Islam, and this causes Islam as a social actor often poorly represented in the media. Abstract

Lexical cohesion can be found in both written and spoken texts. It is critical because it is a device to make text cohesive and coherent. Consequently, lexical cohesion serves as an indicator to measure whether a text is cohesive or coherent. However, using lexical cohesion appropriately is challenging, especially for non-native English learners. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to analyze lexical cohesion found in spoken text. This study applied qualitative method and the data were collected from five podcasts of The Global Story podcast by the BBC World Service YouTube channel. In analyzing the data, the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Paltridge (2022) was applied. The results reveal that all types of lexical cohesion, such as repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation are found in the data. Among them, collocation is the most frequently used. Moreover, lexical cohesion in podcasts shows its essential role in maintaining coherence and facilitating comprehension in spoken text. These findings can be used as the reference for improving the vocabulary of non-native English learners, especially for spoken use.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the patterns of Indonesian-English code-mixing in entertainment-focused communication on X. The study is grounded in Muysken’s (2000) typology of code-mixing, which classifies linguistic blending into insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The data were sourced from 157 posts collected from seven selected entertainment accounts on X from May 1 to June 30, 2025. Entertainment accounts were chosen because they often employ multilingual expression to attract and engage diverse audiences. Employing a qualitative research design, data were gathered using the documentation technique, which involved selecting posts containing Indonesian-English code-mixing. The analysis applied Muysken’s framework to categorize each instance into one of the three types. The results reveal that insertion was the most frequent type (78.34%), followed by congruent lexicalization (12.10%) and alternation (9.55%). These findings confirm the consistent dominance of insertion across various online and social media contexts, while also showing that the leading type can vary depending on discourse domains. The research strengthens the relevance of Muysken’s framework in digital sociolinguistics, providing insights for content creators and digital marketers in engaging multilingual audiences effectively.

Abstract

Claiming that “this may be the most important speech I’ve ever made,” this speech was one of the most noteworthy turning points of the 2020 United States presidential election. This paper aims at analyzing Trump’s speech on voter fraud claims that was released on December 2, 2020 from a critical discourse perspective. This descriptive qualitative research describes and investigates the main features, the main points of concern, and the objectives tried to achieve by delivering the speech. The result of the study shows that the main features of Trump’s political discourse include simplicity, repetition, parataxis, frames, deictics, hyperboles, inarticulation, and hearsay evidence. These features reflect Trump’s personality as well as his supporters’ characteristics. Regarding the main points of the discourse, there are several issues, including pandemic, swing states, mail-in ballots, and rigged system, that Trump tries to convey. There are also further implications or objectives that Trump tries to achieve by releasing the speech: keeping loyal supporters and avoiding prosecution.
