Abstract

Google Translate has gained popularity due to some improvements to produce accurate translations since 2016. However, there is an on-going debate over the accuracy of Google Translate products. In response to this issue, the current study investigates how Google Translate interprets source language, particularly relative clauses into target language and how accurate the translation products are. This study used a qualitative case study. Moreover, the study used some chapters from an engineering textbook together with their translation version as primary data. The data in the form of relative clauses were put on a table side by side. It was then analysed and evaluated using a comparative method to find out similarity and differences. The study found that dominantly current Google Translate uses literal and expansion techniques. Furthermore, the findings suggest that GT produces accurate translation when translating relative clauses.

Abstract

Lexical cohesion can be found in both written and spoken texts. It is critical because it is a device to make text cohesive and coherent. Consequently, lexical cohesion serves as an indicator to measure whether a text is cohesive or coherent. However, using lexical cohesion appropriately is challenging, especially for non-native English learners. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to analyze lexical cohesion found in spoken text. This study applied qualitative method and the data were collected from five podcasts of The Global Story podcast by the BBC World Service YouTube channel. In analyzing the data, the theory of lexical cohesion proposed by Paltridge (2022) was applied. The results reveal that all types of lexical cohesion, such as repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation are found in the data. Among them, collocation is the most frequently used. Moreover, lexical cohesion in podcasts shows its essential role in maintaining coherence and facilitating comprehension in spoken text. These findings can be used as the reference for improving the vocabulary of non-native English learners, especially for spoken use.

Abstract

Editorials are widely recognized as a space where newspapers express their views and shape public opinion. While much attention has been given to the persuasive function of editorials, relatively little scholarly work has explored how evaluative language is used to build affiliation between writers and readers. This study addresses that gap by examining how The Jakarta Post constructs ideological affiliation through evaluative languages (attitudes), coupling patterns, and affiliation strategies. Drawing on Appraisal Theory within Systemic Functional Linguistics, the study explores how attitudes are constructed and combined with ideational content to position readers. The data were five editorial texts which were selected using a constructed week sampling method over a one-month period to ensure variety and balance. The findings show that appreciation is the most common type of attitude, which often appears in negative forms to criticize policies and institutional performance. Judgment is often used in the investigated editorials, especially when evaluating public figures. In contrast, affect appears less frequently, but it still plays an important role in conveying shared emotional concerns. These attitudes are usually presented through couplings with ideational elements such as actors, events, or policies. This combination makes the evaluations more persuasive. Two dominant coupling patterns were identified, namely [NEG + INDONESIA] which is used to criticize government performance and policy and [POS + INDONESIA] which highlights national values or collective goals. To foster alignment with readers, the editorials employ affiliation strategies such as conceding and overriding (a divisive strategy) and repetition (a solidary strategy) which help guide readers toward shared viewpoints or editorial stances. The findings shed light on a clearer understanding of how evaluative language in editorials builds ideological affiliation. The study offers theoretical insights into appraisal in Indonesian media discourse and practical contributions by highlighting how evaluative language shapes reader perspectives and supports media literacy development.

Abstract

In recent years, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) has gained popularity among educators across the world, including in Indonesia. In classroom practice, various procedures have been applied to conduct CLIL lessons. One of them is the Reading to Learn (R2L) pedagogy developed in the Systemic Functional Linguistic tradition. This current study illustrates how R2L pedagogy was employed in an Indonesian CLIL biology lesson. To achieve the goal, the study used a qualitative case study. The data were obtained from video recordings of classes during the implementation at a private school in Bandung Barat, Indonesia. At the time of the teaching, the R2L pedagogy was applied in the classroom to embed English literacy in biology lessons for senior high school students. From the pedagogic register analysis of the selected lesson, it was revealed that the lesson consisted of three carefully planned lesson stages. First, preparing for reading immersed students in daily life and helped them acquire basic knowledge by using images or diagrams. Subsequently, detailed reading was carefully prepared to connect the activated knowledge with human digestive systems (disciplinary knowledge). Here, the students read the given text to identify technical processes in the digestive system in each organ, jotted them down in the form of notes, and elaborated on the terms. At the last stage, the observed teacher incorporated the scientific terms into new writings during a joint construction activity. R2L pedagogy, as described here, supports educators in delivering interactive CLIL lessons effectively and enables educators to promote embedded literacy in classrooms.
