Abstract

Indonesian public diplomacy has been understood as an effort to attach a certain image like a moderate, democratic and progressive image. Nevertheless, the image is not always present in bridging Malaysian bilateral relations. In Malaysia Malaysia's bilateral relations practice, public diplomacy reveals itself in a different face. This article places public diplomacy not only as an effort to maintain the image in rationalists view, but public diplomacy as an effort to maintain relationships through shared identity. Through Indonesian diplomatic studies on Malaysia's three main issues over the past 15 years, it was found that public diplomacy was present as an effort to maintain relations through the shared identity as the Bangsa Serumpun (One Kin) or known as Kinship. Although Malaysia social economic context has changed, Indonesia still believes that the obligation to place the stability of relationships is a priority. Self-refrain and encouraging public dissemination become the practices of Indonesian public diplomacy towards Malaysia. Through qualitative methods, Indonesian policy documentation studies of three major bilateral issues found that Kinship is still the main reference for Indonesia in maintaining bilateral relations although it’s practiced differently. Key Words: Public Diplomacy, Shared Identity, Kinship.

Abstract

Multicultural curriculum in Indonesia is developed for students with multicultural backgrounds to internalize multicultural values without having to lose their own cultural identity. A multicultural curriculum is designed to promote teaching methods developed based on the diversity of the students themselves with the purpose of educating them to understand pluralism, humanism, and democracy and to respect each other both inside and outside the school. Such a multicultural curriculum proves to be a barrier for students with non multicultural backgrounds.  Their different backgrounds limit their understanding of the diversity. This situation requires a new curriculum. This article is the result of the Competitive Grants research regarding multicultural curriculum for students of foreign nationalities. The interviews with the participants of IACS (Indonesian Art Culture Sholarship) program in 2013 and 2014 have indicated that classroom discussions and direct interaction with the local community could become some kind of reinforcement for the formation of a new curriculum for students with foreign nationalities to better understand the diversity of Indonesia instead of art and cultural education.

Abstract

Being isolated and lacking public facilities, border areas tend to be neglected. On the other hand, border areas can serve as economic and social hubs if isolation is broken through development and international cooperation. The Aruk border area in Sambas Regency was extremely underdeveloped before the construction of the Aruk Cross-border Post (PLBN). Opening the remoteness of Aruk was a challenging endeavor. However, through the local government’s efforts, Aruk has become one of the wheels of the economy in Sajingan Besar District, Sambas Regency. Using the concepts of the formal and informal roles of paradiplomacy in transborder diplomacy, this article reviews how paradiplomacy attempts to open up the isolation of Aruk for the welfare of the people at the border. This qualitative research discovered that the roles of formal and informal paradiplomacy in Sambas have significantly affected the development of the regency. Formal relationships have been held in the KK Sosek Malindo, while informal relationships have been built by personal relationships owned by regional sub-national actors. The two relations have encouraged the birth of policies supporting the border area’s development in Aruk.

Abstract

This research explores the decision to have child freedom, namely the choice not to have children, as a form of ecofeminist praxis in supporting climate change action. By integrating ecofeminist theory, this study aims to analyze the individual impact of child freedom decisions on climate change and explore the gender dimensions that may be involved. Adopting a literature study approach, this research details how these decisions can be understood through an ecofeminist lens, linking issues of gender and reproductive choices to the ecological responsibility of individuals. Through an in-depth literature analysis, this research strengthens the argument that child freedom can be articulated as a positive action in reducing an individual's ecological footprint and consideringthe social impact of gender in the context of climate change. This discussion highlights ecofeminist perspectives in the context of child freedom and explores how policy and society can support this choice as a concrete contribution to environmental sustainability. It is hoped that the results of this research can deepen our understanding of the relationship between gender issues, family decisions, and climate change action. The implications of these findings can provide a basis for the development of more inclusive policies and support concrete steps in overcoming the challenges of climate change. Abstract

This study examines child labour practices within the cobalt supply chain of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the lens of the Global Production Network (GPN) framework. The findings indicate that, between 2018 and 2022, the DRC supplied over two-thirds of the world’s cobalt, with national reserves reaching 4 million metric tonnes, approximately 48% of global reserves. The Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector contributes 15–30% of national production, yet operates with minimal regulation, rendering it highly vulnerable to exploitation. UNICEF (2014) estimates that around 40,000 children are engaged in cobalt mining, while the CLMRS recorded 5,346 child workers in two key provinces as of 2024. External interventions such as the COTECCO project have enhanced monitoring capacity (+38%), but regulatory implementation and certification remain largely administrative, lacking substantive transformation in governance. The GPN analysis highlights that disparities in value distribution and risk within the cobalt supply chain stem from the dominance of global actors, weak local governance, and fragmented cross-sectoral collaboration. This study underscores the necessity of global governance reform, local capacity strengthening, and genuine commitment from consumer countries and multinational corporations to ensure the protection of children’s rights and the creation of an equitable and sustainable cobalt supply chain.
