Abstract

Effective leadership is vital in educational settings to foster a positive and productive school environment. Student-centered leadership, which emphasizes the needs, experiences, and voices of students in decision-making, is a key strategy for achieving this goal. This pilot study examines the effectiveness of student-centered leadership practices of the principal from the perspectives of students and teachers, focusing on key areas such as setting achievement targets, fostering high expectations, strategic resource planning, quality teaching practices, enhancing teacher competencies, and creating a conducive school environment. A quantitative survey method was employed, gathering responses from a total of 132 respondents, consisting of 96 students and 36 teachers, at Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Tun Abdul Razak, Pahang. The survey, consisting of 30 items, demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.97). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 29.0 with descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation. Results indicate a high perceived effectiveness of student-centered leadership practices, with mean scores above 3.63 across all domains. Despite these positive outcomes, ongoing refinement and adaptation of leadership practices are essential to ensure sustained educational success.

Abstract

The need for an effective leadership in assessment has become increasingly significant in the Malaysian educational context. This concept paper discusses the changing dynamics of educational assessment, emphasising the significance of classroom assessment in promoting student learning. The discussion initiates by delineating the diverse categories of educational assessments and emphasise the increasing significance of classroom assessment in fostering effective learning environments. In Malaysia, there is a noticeable shift from a traditional exam-oriented culture to a more holistic, learning-centred approach. However, this shift presents various obstacles, especially for teachers in successfully executing classroom assessment. Thus, this paper highlights the pivotal role of school leaders in facilitating and assisting teachers as they navigate these challenges. It emphasises on the need for establishing a strong assessment leadership model that acts as a framework for school leaders, enabling them to offer essential direction and support to their teachers. Although current frameworks and standards provide valuable insights, they frequently do not meet the contextual and contemporary requirements of the Malaysian education system. Therefore, this paper provides a foundation for future research and advocates for the development of a contextualized and contemporary assessment leadership model that aligns with both the current educational landscape and the nation's cultural context. A model that is anticipated to enhance the ability of school leaders to effectively support teachers in fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Abstract

In the current digital and information-centric age, the efficient management of school resource centers (SRCs) is vital for improving students' learning experiences and academic achievements. Despite this, many schools face difficulties in optimizing their SRCs due to issues such as limited resources, outdated management techniques, and inconsistent strategic approaches. This study seeks to identify the best management practices employed by SRCs in Kuala Lumpur to overcome these challenges. Using a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with four key respondents: two library and media teachers and two educational technology officers from the Educational Resource and Technology Sector. Through thematic analysis, the research uncovered several essential practices for effective SRC management, including (i) strategic planning, (ii) systematic material organization, (iii) the provision of guidance and advisory services, and (iv) the implementation of benchmarking processes. The findings reveal that these practices are successfully applied in selected schools, emphasizing their importance in improving SRC management. The study stresses the need for structured and strategic management to enhance student learning and overall school performance. Recommendations for school leaders and policymakers include increasing funding, investing in professional development, strengthening policy frameworks, and integrating technology into SRC management. Additionally, the research calls for continuous evaluation and further studies to address the unique needs of SRCs across diverse educational settings in Malaysia.
