Abstract

In the learning process, students are expected to show initiative as a form of their active involvement. Initiative is related to self starting, namely students are involved in learning actively based on their wishes, not just because of the teacher's stimulus and orders. Observations from one of the Tangerang private schools showed a lack of initiative by class XI IPA students in learning biology. This study aims to describe the application of the think pair share learning model to develop student initiatives in learning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with an instrument in the form of a Field Experience Program portfolio 2 which consists of observation sheets, Teaching Implementation Plans, and teaching reflections. The results of the study show that the application of the think-pair-share learning model can develop student initiative in the learning process through the stages of thinking, discussing in pairs, and presenting or sharing the results of discussions in class (sharing). As for indicators of student initiative that developed after the implementation of think-pair-share, namely self-starting, proactive and persistent. The self-starting aspect of students is achieved through students' awareness to act independently in class, such as actively discussing and being involved in learning. Furthermore, the development of students' proactive aspects is shown through the real participation of students in the learning process such as initiatives to ask questions and respond to teachers. Student contributions in the process of solving problems will develop students' persistent aspects.

Abstract

Learning genetics courses often faces challenges because the material studied is abstract and complex. A relevant learning model is needed that meets the needs of students to improve their competence in genetics courses. This study aims to identify the needs of students and lecturers through a needs analysis approach as a basis for developing a relevant genetics learning model. The study used a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and document observations. The results of the analysis showed that students needed learning that was more integrated with the context of everyday life to understand the concept of genetics in depth and needed motivational learning because this course was considered a difficult course. The lecturer explained the need to develop a learning model that provides interactive activities, such as project-based learning, case studies, or other effective strategies to improve student competence. Based on these results, a prototype of a contextual genetics learning model will be developed to meet the needs of students and lecturers teaching the course. These findings are the basis for designing a more relevant and effective genetics learning model. The study provides initial insight into the needs of genetics learning and is the first step in developing an effective learning model according to the context of students. Further research is needed to test and implement the proposed model

Abstract

Students’ participation in learning is the involvement of all students that is carried out responsibly to support the learning objectives. It can be seen from the indicators, such as asking questions, answering questions, doing assignments, and submitting assignments on time. However, it was found that there is a lack of participation in class XI Science students at a school in Jakarta, especially in the context of post-pandemic adjustment learning where learning is carried out offline and online. The solution implemented as an effort to optimize students’ participation in learning is through applying study in group method. The research method used is descriptive qualitative using an instrument in the form of a portfolio of Field Experience 2 Program activities consisting of observation sheets, mentor feedback, Lesson Plans (RPP), teaching reflections, and students’ assessment recaps. The research results show that student’s participation in learning can be optimized through the application of study in group method. It is seen from the several stages of its implementation, namely conveying procedures and regulations, forming heterogeneous groups with group leaders, delivering material, giving assignments and opportunities for discussion, group presentation sessions, question and answer sessions, and giving awards and conclusions. Suggestions for further research are the need to change the members in the study in group method regularly based on the topics and increase the time allocation for students to work on assignments.
