Abstract

In the era of globalization, education plays a crucial role in instilling intercultural values in children; however, the lack of systematic approaches remains a major challenge. This study aims to formulate effective literature-based literacy strategies for developing intercultural values, evaluate their impact, and identify challenges and opportunities in their implementation. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this research analyzes the implementation of literature-based literacy strategies through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, document analysis, and questionnaires involving students, teachers, and literary materials used in learning. The findings indicate that this strategy is effective in enhancing students' understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, improving social interactions, and fostering empathy toward different cultural perspectives. The analysis of questionnaire data using a Likert scale reveals a significant increase in students’ attitudes toward intercultural values after participating in the program. Additionally, selecting relevant literary materials and providing adequate teacher training are key factors in the successful implementation of this strategy. Therefore, this study recommends integrating literature-based literacy into children's educational curricula to foster a more inclusive and tolerant cultural understanding.

Abstract

Pelemahan semangat nasionalisme di kalangan siswa sekolah dasar menjadi tantangan nyata dalam dunia pendidikan saat ini. Minimnya pemahaman terhadap sejarah perjuangan bangsa serta kurangnya keteladanan yang dikenalkan dalam pembelajaran menyebabkan lunturnya rasa cinta tanah air. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan kembali nilai-nilai nasionalisme melalui pendekatan edukatif, interaktif, dan kontekstual. Mitra pengabdian adalah SDN 1 Kemantren Jabung, Kabupaten Malang. Metode yang digunakan mencakup penyusunan materi tokoh sejarah, penyampaian pembelajaran interaktif, pementasan drama sejarah, penggunaan media audiovisual, Lomba Cerdas Cermat Sejarah, Pameran Sejarah, dan ceramah inspiratif oleh narasumber. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan antusiasme siswa, penguatan pemahaman terhadap nilai kebangsaan, serta tumbuhnya sikap positif terhadap persatuan dan identitas nasional. Guru-guru juga menyambut baik metode ini sebagai inovasi pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan Kurikulum Merdeka. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan kreatif dan partisipatif dalam pembelajaran sejarah berpotensi besar dalam memperkuat karakter dan identitas kebangsaan siswa sekolah dasar. Hasil pengabdian ini penting untuk menjadi rujukan dalam pengembangan model pendidikan karakter berbasis sejarah di jenjang dasar.

Abstract

The language and critical thinking skills of students in higher education still show significant weaknesses, especially in conveying ideas reflectively, logically, and communicatively. Conventional learning models with minimal social interaction and unresponsive to students’ affective needs are considered ineffective in answering these challenges. This study aims to test the effectiveness of the learning model based on the psychosocial-literacy approach in improving students’ language skills. This approach integrates the critical literacy dimension with social interaction and emotional dynamics in the learning process. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving students from the language education study program at a university in Indonesia. The study results show that the psychosocial-literacy model can encourage improving students’ language skills in narrative structure, argumentative expression, and sensitivity to the text’s social context. In addition, this approach also creates a more inclusive, reflective, and dialogical learning atmosphere. These findings reinforce the argument that learning that combines cognitive, affective, and social dimensions can produce a transformative learning process and empower students. Thus, this study recommends implementing the psychosocial-literacy model as an alternative learning strategy that is more relevant in answering higher education needs in the 21st century.
