Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: There are various kinds of traditional medicine in Indonesia, either derived from animals or from plants. One of kind traditional medicine that can be found in Indonesia are Euphorbia milii and propolis which has benefits as an immunomodulator and as an antioxidant. The use of traditional medicine with uncertain doses and time intervals may cause some adverse effects. The main purpose of the study is to know the effect of tea which made from Euphorbia milii and propolis on the histological appearance of the kidney of male wistar rats. Methods: This study used a randomized post test only controlled group. There are 4 groups of rats were taken from total 24 male wistar rats with an age range 2-3 months and a bodyweight ± 200 grams. The controlled group (K) was given aquabidest, the intervention group (P1-P3) was given the tea of Euphorbia milii and propolis, then terminated and continued with histological examination by measuring the diameter of the glomerulus. Data analysis technique is One Way Anova and Post Hoc with LSD test. Result: Based on the result of data analysis, the difference between the controlled group (K) and the intervention group (P1-P3) was not significant. Conclusion: Based on the result, the conclusion is that the tea of Euphorbia milii and propolis did not cause significant damage to the kidneys of male wistar rats. Abstract

ABSTRACT Effects of Giving Red Dragon Fruit Skin (Hylocereus polyrhizus) as Phytoestrogens on Endometriak Thickness and Myometrium of Menopausal Model Rats Background: Menopause is a condition in which the body experiences a lack of estrogen due to decreased ovarian function. Decreased estrogen levels result in particular changes in the thickness and shape of the uterus. Phytoestrogens are herbal compounds that have several similarities to the functions and structures of estrogen. Phytoestrogens also can be an alternative as a therapeutic option when they need a substitute for estrogen. Among several types of phytoestrogens, anthocyanin is one of the potential. Anthocyanins are mostly found in the red dragon fruit, Hylocereus polyrhizus. Red dragon fruit skin contains anthocyanins. Anthocyanins compounds have the potential to overcome the symptoms caused by menopause through their phytoestrogens and antioxidant activity.Objective: The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of red dragon fruit skin extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) on the thickness of the endometrium ad myometrium in menopausal model rats. Methods: This study applied a randomized post-test only control group design using a sample of 30 female wistar rats that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample was divided into 3 (three) treatment groups where a group was consisted of 10 female wistar rats. The treatment group 1 was the control group, while the treatment group 2 was the group given the ethanol extract of red dragon fruit skin at a dose of 60 mg/200 grBW/day for 30 days, and the treatment group 3 was the group given the ethanol extract of red dragon fruit skin at a dose of 90 mg/200 grBW/day for 30 days. Results: The study signified an increase in the endometrial thickness after being given red dragon fruit extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) at a dose of 60 mg/200 grBW and 90 mg/200 grBW in menopausal model rats. In the single-lane ANOVA test, the thickness of the endometrium found a significance value of 0.038 (p<0.05), while the thickness of the myometrium found a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05).

Abstract

Background : Estrogen is a steroid hormone that is not only the primary sexual hormone in women, but also functions to protect the body from many damaging conditions, especially in the liver. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) rind is known to have a higher antioxidant potential than the fruit flesh and has the potential to be an alternative solution for this condition. Objective : To determine the effect of giving Hylocerus polyrhizus rind extract on collagen deposition in the livers of menopausal wistar rats. Methods : This randomized post-test only control group design study was conducted on in vivo experimental animals in the form of rats that had undergone the ovariectomy procedure and were randomly divided into three groups. Group P0 served as the control without intervention, P1 with the intervention of ethanol extract of red dragon fruit rind at a dose of 60 body weight/200gr/day, while P2 with the intervention at a dose of 90 body weight/200grBB/day. Results : Of the 30 mice divided into three groups, the mean area of collagen deposition was obtained in the P0 (24,130 ± 7,205), P1 (18,325 ± 4,221) and P2 groups (12,576 ± 3,739). The test results with One Way ANOVA found a significant difference with a value of p = 0.000189. The results of the LSD Post Hoc test found a significant difference in mean between the P0 and P2 groups (p = 0.00017). Conclusion : Administration of Hylocereus polyrhizus ethanol extract inhibited the expansion of collagen deposition in the treatment group's livers when compared to the control group's livers.

Abstract

The skin of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) contains polyphenols, in particular anthocyanins, which may act as phytoestrogens and antioxidants. Phytoestrogens can help synthesize collagen through their bonds with estrogen receptors and antioxidants prevent the accumulation of free radicals that can damage collagen, so the skin of red dragon fruit has the potential to prevent vaginal organ disorders due to the reduced amount of collagen in the vaginal wall during menopause. This study aims to prove the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of Hylocereus polyrhizus rind in preventing decreased collagen in the vaginal wall of menopausal rats. This study was structured using a randomized post-test only control group design on 30 female Wistar rats, which were divided into three groups, namely the control group (P0) was given normal saline, the treatment group (P1) was given ethanol extract 60mg/200grBW and (P2) was given ethanol extract 90mg/200grBB. Dosing rats orally for 30 days, then vaginal wall samples were taken to examine vaginal collagen levels with Sirius red staining. The amount of collagen is calculated by the percentage area of ??the collagen pixels compared to the pixels of the entire vaginal tissue. The results show that the mean amount of collagen at P0, P1 and P2 is 55.53 ± 8.12 respectively; 67.50±3.89; 78.14±5.87. The One-way ANOVA test shows statistically significant differences among the groups (p = 0.000). The post hoc analysis using the LSD test finds that the mean amount of vaginal collagen in P2 is the highest than P0 (p=0.000) and P1 (p=0.001) and P1 is higher than P0 (p=0.000). It is concluded that giving of ethanol extract of Hylocereus polyrhizus rind is able to prevent the decrease in vaginal wall collagen in menopausal rats.

Abstract

Exposure to UV light as an inducer of ROS will damage lipid macromolecules, proteins, and DNA. Lipids as a layer that prevents evaporation of the skin will lose the ability to hold water evaporation due to excessive UV exposure for a long time so that the impact on the skin will look dry due to an increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) so that the water content in the stratum corneum (SC) decreases. Adverse effects on the skin caused by free radicals such as dry skin can be overcome with several active ingredients contained in Moringa leaf extract (Moringa oleifera) which contain flavonoids and other active ingredients. This study aims to analyze the effect of Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract cream with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20% on moisture in rat skin exposed to UV light. This study used a randomized pre-test and post-test pattern on 30 male Wistar rats which were split up randomly into 5 groups. The moisture value of the rat skin was measured to find the moisture value before treatment (pre-test) using a skin analyzer 24 hours after shaving. The group will be divided into control, base cream, Moringa leaf extract cream with a concentration of 5%, 10%, and 20%. The cream will be applied 20 minutes before and 4 hours after exposure to UVB rays. Response to therapy was measured using a skin analyzer 24 hours after 2 weeks of irradiation in the 5 groups. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests. Based on data analysis of the mean skin moisture value, no significant difference was found between the pretest and posttest, but the post-test data between concentration groups showed significant results as measured using the Kruskal Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney test.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Indonesia mempunyai sumber daya melimpah yang dapat digunakan sebagai pengobatan tradisional. Dua diantaranya yaitu tanaman Euphorbia milii dan propolis. Euphorbia milii dan propolis mempunyai beragam manfaat seperti antioksidan, antibakteri, dan imunomodulator. Efek toksik dari teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan propolisx terhadap hepar belum dilaksanakan penelitian sebelumnya. Tujuan dari dilaksanakannya penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui efek pemberian teh kombinasi dari bunga Euphorbia milii dan propolis terhadap gambaran histopatologi hepar tikus wistar jantan. Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian analitik eksperimental dengan rancangan penelitian berupa randomized post-test only control group design. Dua puluh empat tikus wistar jantan berusia 8 sampai 12 minggu dengan berat badan ± 0.2 kg dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok, yaitu; kelompok kontrol (pakan standar + aquabidest), P1 (teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan propolis 40mg/100grbb selama 2 minggu), P2 (teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan propolis 40mg/100grbb selama 4 minggu), dan P3 (teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan propolis 40mg/100grbb selama 6 minggu). Hasil: Berdasarkan analisis data dari rerata skoring degenerasi dan nekrosis sel hepatosit, tidak ditemukan perbedaan rerata yang signifikan diantara kelompok kontrol dan kelompok perlakuan P1, P2, dan P3 (p>0,05). Simpulan: Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian teh kombinasi Euphorbia milii dan propolis dengan dosis 40mg/100grbb tidak menimbulkan kerusakan yang bermakna terhadap hepar tikus wistar jantan.
