Abstract

E-cigarettes are the most widely used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), particularly among young people. Exposure to e-cigarette vapor increases free radicals and suppresses the body's immune system. The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the spleen causes inflammation and tissue injury that decreases immune reactivity. It causes changes in the histoarchitecture of the spleen, including the lymphatic nodules. It might be repaired by the antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity of green tea that stimulates and enhances the immune system. Green tea polyphenols affect the production of cytokines along with the activation, proliferation, and differentiation of lymphocytes in the body. Increasing the diameter of the lymphatic nodules is an indicator of the immunomodulatory activity of green tea in mice exposed to e-cigarette vapor. The study design was a randomized post-test only controlled group with 27 sampled mice divided randomly into 3 groups, namely; P0 (e-cigarette vapor), P1 (e-cigarette vapor + green tea 0.020 g/bb/day), and P2 (e-cigarette vapor + green tea 0.040 g/bb/day). There were significant differences between the control and treatment groups, while between green tea doses of 0.020 g/bb/day and 0.040 g/bb/day was no significant difference. The study showed green tea infusion with an optimal dose of 0.020g/bb/day affected increasing the diameter of the spleen lymphatic nodules of mice exposed to e-cigarette vapor. Further research based on the difference in duration of infusion exposure and overall observation of the white pulp component are needed. Abstract

Kelemahan daya saing industri kosmetik estetik dalam negeri terhadap produk asing terutama disebabkan kurangnya data ilmiah mengenai efikasi produk untuk mendukung daya jualnya. Salah satu produk kosmetika yang sedang dikembangkan adalah masker gel ekstrak kulit manggis. Penelitian sebelumnya menunjukkan potensi masker ini untuk mencegah penuaan dini kulit akibat sinar matahari. Pada penelitian ini ingin diketahui pengaruhnya terhadap kelenjar sebaseus kulit. Rancangan penelitian eksperimental post test only control group dilakukan pada 27 tikus Wistar yang dipapar sinar UVB 840mJ selama 28 hari. Sampel dibagi ke dalam tiga kelompok, yaitu P0 (kontrol normal), P1 (dipapar sinar UVB dan dioles plasebo), dan P2 (dipapar sinar UVB dan dioles masker). Sampel kulit tikus kemudian diproses untuk pengecatan HE lalu ukuran kelanjar sebaseus dianalisis dengan software image raster. Setelah dilakukan analisis dengan anova satu jalan didapatkan perbedaan bermakna (p<0,05) ukuran kelenjar sebaseus antara kelompok P2 (11,51%) dengan kelompok P0 (3,77%) dan P1 (5,04%), sedangkan P0 dan P1 tidak menunjukkan perbedaan bermakna (p>0,05). Penelitian membuktikan bahwa masker gel ekstrak kulit manggis dapat mencegah peningkatan ukuran kelenjar sebasea akibat paparan sinar matahari. Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the potential of green tea infusion in reducing Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the lungs of mice exposed to electronic cigarette vapor. The research employed an experimental method with a Randomized Post-Test Only Control Group design. The research sample consisted of 20 male mice aged 3-4 months with an average weight of 30 grams, divided into four groups: normal group (CN), negative control (NC), treatment 1 with a dosage of green tea 0.03 g (T1), and treatment 2 with a dosage of green tea 0.06 g (T2). After the treatment, an analysis of MDA levels in the mice's lungs was conducted by TBARS test. The average levels of MDA in mice were obtained as follows: CN=12.669 µM, NC=23.940 µM, T1=10.997 µM, T2=14.395 µM. Statistical analysis using the One-Way ANOVA test revealed significant differences (p<0.05) between CN and NC, NC and T1, and NC and T2. These findings indicate that green tea infusion has the potential to reduce MDA levels in the lungs of mice exposed to electric cigarette vapor. Thus, this research provides a foundation for further studies regarding optimal dosage and the mechanism of action of green tea infusion in combating the negative effects of exposure to electronic cigarette vapor on respiratory organs.

Abstract

Background : Estrogen is a steroid hormone that is not only the primary sexual hormone in women, but also functions to protect the body from many damaging conditions, especially in the liver. Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) rind is known to have a higher antioxidant potential than the fruit flesh and has the potential to be an alternative solution for this condition. Objective : To determine the effect of giving Hylocerus polyrhizus rind extract on collagen deposition in the livers of menopausal wistar rats. Methods : This randomized post-test only control group design study was conducted on in vivo experimental animals in the form of rats that had undergone the ovariectomy procedure and were randomly divided into three groups. Group P0 served as the control without intervention, P1 with the intervention of ethanol extract of red dragon fruit rind at a dose of 60 body weight/200gr/day, while P2 with the intervention at a dose of 90 body weight/200grBB/day. Results : Of the 30 mice divided into three groups, the mean area of collagen deposition was obtained in the P0 (24,130 ± 7,205), P1 (18,325 ± 4,221) and P2 groups (12,576 ± 3,739). The test results with One Way ANOVA found a significant difference with a value of p = 0.000189. The results of the LSD Post Hoc test found a significant difference in mean between the P0 and P2 groups (p = 0.00017). Conclusion : Administration of Hylocereus polyrhizus ethanol extract inhibited the expansion of collagen deposition in the treatment group's livers when compared to the control group's livers.

Abstract

Atrofi vagina adalah masalah kesehatan yang paling banyak dialami oleh wanita menopause. Patogenesisnya berkorelasi dengan penurunan kadar hormon estrogen, yang mengakibatkan  epitel vagina lebih tipis dengan proporsi sel-sel superfisial yang menurun. Pada dinding vagina terjadi penurunan jumlah serabut kolagen, penurunan massa otot polos dan penurunan vaskularisasi. Konsekuensi dari perubahan tersebut adalah dinding vagina mengalami penurunan dalam ukuran, elastis, lubrikasi, dan integritas lapisan mukosa. Gejala  yang paling sering dialami adalah rasa nyeri pada vagina, yang akhirnya menyebabkan ketakutan untuk melakukan aktivitas seksual.Penanganan gejala atrofi vagina menjadi penting karena populasi wanita menopause yang besar dan akan terus meningkat. Tujuan penulisan tinjauan literatur adalah mengulas patogenesis atrofi vagina dan berbagai macam pilihan terapinya. Literatur didapatkan melalui pencarian pada Google Scholar dan PubMed database selama tahun 2022 dan dipilih terbitan 10 tahun terakhir, baik dalam Bahasa Indonesia maupun Bahasa Inggris. Kata kunci yang digunakan adalah menopause, atrofi vagina, patogenesis atrofi vagina, terapi atrofi vagina, fitoestrogen, Selective Estrogen Estrogen Receptors (SERM), dan terapi sulih hormon. Hasil menemukan bahwa sebagian besar kasus tidak terdiagnosis dan hanya sedikit yang mendapat terapi yang tepat. Sebagian besar wanita menopause mengobati sendiri gejala atrofi vagina yang dialami dengan obat-obat yang dijual bebas dan ada banyak kasus yang tidak diobati. Terapi utama atrofi vagina adalah hormon yang diberikan secara sistemik atau topikal. Salah satu terapi sistemik adalah SERM. Terapi topikal pilihannya sangat banyak yaitu fitoestrogen, asam hialuronat, pelembab, pelumas, kolostrum, vitamin, herbal, terapi laser dan radio frekuensi. Berbagai jenis metode terapi memiliki mekanisme kerja yang berbeda, sebagian besar terbukti efektif mampu memperbaiki struktur dan fisiologi vagina serta mampu mengurangi gejala atrofi vagina dan juga memperbaiki fungsi seksual.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Streptococcus suis is the most frequent etiology of zoonotic bacterial meningitis, potentially initiating an outbreak. Acute bacterial meningitis caused by S. suis has various manifestations, often accompanied by sepsis with multiple organ involvement. This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of S. suis outgrowth in the brain, which is associated with nuclear factor-κappaB (NF-κB) activation, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release (NETosis), and microglial activation as three crucial pathological mechanisms of bacterial meningitis. METHODS This study used 64 female BALB/c mice aged 6 weeks and weighed 18−20 g, grouped into infected and non-infected as the control group. Both groups were administered 1 ml of S. suis serotype 2 suspension (1 × 107 colony forming-unit/ml) and normal saline intraperitoneally. The bacterial colony count of S. suis was evaluated, along with NF-κB and NET levels in blood and brain, as well as meningeal inflammation and microglial activation in the brain at Days 1, 3, 5, and 7 post-infection. RESULTS The invasion of S. suis into the brain slightly induced NF-κB activation, leading to a burst of inflammatory responses, neutrophil infiltration with NET releases, and microglia activation that co-occurred, showing their peaks on Days 3 and 5 after onset. CONCLUSIONS The S. suis invasion into the mice’s brain increased NF-κB activation, NETosis, and microglia activation during S. suis meningitis infection.
