Abstract

Background:  Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence in Indonesia, largely due to lifestyle changes. Blood glucose control in T2DM patients not only relies on pharmacological therapy but can also be supported by non-pharmacological interventions such as progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy. These therapies are believed to lower blood glucose levels by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Aims: To examine the effect of a combination of progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy on blood glucose levels in T2DM patients. Method: A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group approach was used. A total of 30 hospitalized T2DM patients at a hospital in Tasikmalaya were recruited through incidental sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received progressive muscle relaxation for 30 minutes and lavender aromatherapy for 5 minutes twice daily over three consecutive days. The control group received standard hospital care. Random blood glucose levels were measured before and after the intervention. Results: A significant reduction in the intervention group from 265.93 mg/dL with an SD of 41.24 to 220.40 mg/dL with an SD of 51.67 (p = 0.000), while the control group showed a non-significant decrease from 281.13 mg/dL with an SD of 45.55 to 268.87 mg/dL with an SD of 51.01 (p = 0.205). A significant difference was also observed between the two groups after the intervention (p = 0.015).  Conclusion:  the combination of progressive muscle relaxation and lavender aromatherapy was effective in lowering blood glucose levels in T2DM patients. It can be considered as a complementary non-pharmacological therapy in diabetes management.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterised by elevated blood glucose levels and currently shows an increasing trend in prevalence, both globally and nationally. The management of DM is not only conducted pharmacologically but also through non-pharmacological therapies such as physical exercise and complementary treatments. Buerger Allen Exercise and acupressure are known to lower blood glucose levels by improving blood circulation and increasing insulin sensitivity. Aims:  To determine the effect of the combination of Buerger Allen Exercise and acupressure on blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 DM at a primary healthcare facility in Tasikmalaya City. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 30 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Blood glucose levels were measured before and after the intervention. Data were analysed using the Friedman test. Results:  There was a significant decrease in blood sugar levels before and after the combination intervention of Buerger Allen Exercise and acupressure; the average blood sugar level of pretest 1 was 254.00 mg/dL and pretest 2 was 263.50 mg/dL decreasing to 222.00 mg/dL with a significant value of Chi-Square Calculation > Chi Square Table value (42.467 > 5.991) and p-value (0.000 < 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of Buerger Allen Exercise and acupressure has a significant effect on reducing blood sugar levels in type 2 DM patients at a primary healthcare facility in Tasikmalaya City

Abstract

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can lead to hypertension, especially in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Relaxation techniques, such as Guided Imagery and Slow, Deep Breathing, may help reduce blood pressure. Aims: To assess the effectiveness of the combined Guided Imagery and Slow Deep Breathing relaxation techniques in lowering blood pressure among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 38 patients, 19 in each group, were purposively sampled using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The normality of systolic and diastolic blood pressure data was tested using the Shapiro-Wilk test, which indicated a normal distribution. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test and independent t-test. Results: The intervention group experienced a mean reduction of 10.11 mmHg in systolic blood pressure (SD = 7.44), while the control group showed a mean change of -7.74 mmHg (SD = 5.50). For diastolic blood pressure, the intervention group decreased by a mean of 9.11 mmHg (SD = 7.36), compared to a change of -7.47 mmHg (SD = 6.28) in the control group. The independent t-test revealed statistically significant differences between groups for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with p-values of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These results demonstrate that the combined Guided Imagery and Slow Deep Breathing intervention significantly lowers blood pressure in patients undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease. Conclusion: The combined relaxation techniques significantly reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis, supporting their use as non-pharmacological interventions for hypertension management.

Abstract

Heart disease remains a leading cause of global mortality, closely linked to modifiable unhealthy lifestyles. The Indonesian Ministry of Health introduced the CERDIK program as a preventive strategy, encompassing routine health checks, smoking cessation, regular physical activity, balanced diet, adequate rest, and stress management. However, the incidence of heart failure remains high, suggesting inconsistent adherence. This study aims to analyze the risk factors for heart failure based on the CERDIK behavioral approach in Tasikmalaya. A non-experimental quantitative case–control study was conducted involving 60 respondents (30 cases and 30 controls) at RSUD Dr. Soekardjo. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact Test to determine Odds Ratios (OR). The results revealed that regular physical activity (p 0.001; OR 0.11) and a balanced diet (p = 0.03; OR 0.04) were significantly associated with a lower risk of heart failure. Routine health checks (p 0.001) and adequate rest (p 0.001) also showed strong protective associations. Conversely, stress management did not show a statistically significant association (p = 0.123), likely due to high adherence across both groups. It is concluded that consistent implementation of CERDIK behaviors, particularly physical activity and dietary management, is critical in preventing the progression of cardiovascular disease into heart failure. Healthcare providers must intensify education and monitoring of these specific behaviors in high-risk populations.
