Abstract

This program was triggered by several problems faced by the partner, including students lack of knowledge about Japanese culture, particularly manga and anime, students lack of basic techniques for drawing manga and anime characters, and students’ low interest in the Japanese language.  Therefore, the community service team proposes training sessions on fundamental manga and anime character drawing techniques in order to enhance students' enthusiasm for Japanese language and culture, augment their understanding of Japanese art and culture, particularly manga and anime, boost their competence in drawing through step-by-step demonstrations and explanations of manga and anime drawing techniques, improve their general artistic abilities, and cultivate new interests in Japanese art and culture. The result showed an increase on community empowerment, specifically an enhancement on partner’s skills.

Abstract

The educational scholarship offers are increasing to Al-Qur’an memorizers. It arouses their interest in learning English to have an added value in competing at national and international levels. However, the access to English learning is not widely open for the students of Rumah Tahfidz Syafa'at Qur'an since most of them are coming from low economic families. They can only rely on learning at school for a very limited time, while language exposure must be maximized from an early age for foreign language mastery. Therefore, the community service team tried to build basic English language competencies to increase their literacy through structured English learning taught through conversation and storytelling. The students were specified to those who are in 4th to 6th grade of Elementary School. Character-based learning was implemented here by integrating material with character education to build good characters in the students. It was also as a response to the issue of moral degradation which belongs to the government's focus in education. This program was carried out for 14 face-to-face meetings. The assessments included 1 Initial Knowledge Test (IKT), 2 monthly assessment, and 1 final assessment. As a result of the final assessment, they were able to introduce and describe themselves both in written and spoken form. In addition, observations were also carried out to see the achievements of the integration of character education. The results showed an increase in the 4C aspects which include communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the use of the Poro Nihongo application in improving Kanji reading skills. In this era of globalization, mastery of foreign languages, especially Japanese, is very important. However, many students have difficulty in learning Kanji, due to the complex writing system. Poro Nihongo, as a game-based learning application, is designed to make the Kanji learning process more interesting and interactive.Through a qualitative approach and case study design, this study involved 70 students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program at Padang State University, with in-depth interviews conducted with 9 students representing various levels of ability. The interview results showed that students felt that Poro Nihongo helped increase their motivation and engagement in learning Kanji. Students reported improvements in comprehension, speed, and accuracy of reading Kanji after using this application.However, there were challenges faced, such as device limitations, connectivity issues, and potential interference from other applications. Some students also expressed the need for a greater variety of learning materials and support for independent learning. Although, Poro Nihongo has proven to be effective in improving Kanji reading skills, students expect the app to emphasize understanding Kanji meanings and provide better reading speed practice.This research provides valuable insights for app developers, educators, and education policymakers in designing more effective and appropriate learning methods for students in the digital age. The findings expected to contribute to the development of technology integration strategies in Japanese language learning curricula.

Abstract

Ikebana training, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, serves as a creative learning medium integrating culture, art, and 21st-century education. Conducted at SMAN 1 Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman, the program involved 36 Japanese Club members and one teacher, aiming to enhance knowledge of ikebana philosophy and techniques, foster creativity, build self-confidence, and broaden perspectives on simple entrepreneurial opportunities. The experiential learning approach applied 30% theory and 70% practice, including material delivery, demonstrations, hands-on practice, discussions, gallery walks, and evaluations. Data were collected via a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire, rubric-based assessments of student works, open-ended questions, and facilitator observations, analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods and qualitative thematic analysis. The results showed that the vast majority of students gained new knowledge and found the material easy to follow. Many students reported increased motivation and self-confidence, and a significant portion grasped Ikebana's basic philosophy. Assessment of their works revealed balanced compositions and notable creativity, although neatness posed a technical challenge. Qualitative findings highlighted high enthusiasm and positive reflections on creative economy opportunities. In conclusion, Ikebana training is an effective multidisciplinary strategy for promoting cultural literacy and developing 21st-century skills, thereby contributing to the achievement of quality education.   Abstrak Pelatihan ikebana, seni merangkai bunga tradisional Jepang, berpotensi sebagai media pembelajaran kreatif yang mengintegrasikan budaya, seni, dan pendidikan abad ke-21. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di SMAN 1 Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman, dengan melibatkan 36 anggota Klub Jepang dan satu guru pendamping, bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman filosofi dan teknik dasar ikebana, menumbuhkan kreativitas, membangun rasa percaya diri, serta memperluas wawasan terkait peluang kewirausahaan sederhana. Pendekatan pembelajaran pengalaman diterapkan dengan proporsi 30% teori dan 70% praktik, meliputi penyampaian materi, demonstrasi, praktik langsung, diskusi, gallery walk, dan evaluasi. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner skala Likert lima poin, penilaian karya peserta didik berbasis rubrik, pertanyaan terbuka, serta observasi fasilitator, dianalisis menggunakan metode kuantitatif deskriptif dan analisis tematik kualitatif. Hasil menunjukkan mayoritas peserta didik memperoleh pengetahuan baru dan merasa materi mudah diikuti. Banyak peserta didik melaporkan peningkatan motivasi dan rasa percaya diri, serta mampu memahami filosofi dasar Ikebana. Penilaian karya menunjukkan komposisi yang seimbang dan kreativitas yang menonjol, meskipun kerapian menjadi tantangan teknis. Temuan kualitatif menyoroti antusiasme tinggi dan refleksi positif terkait peluang ekonomi kreatif. Disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan Ikebana efektif sebagai strategi multidisipliner untuk mendorong literasi budaya dan mengembangkan keterampilan abad ke-21, serta berkontribusi pada pencapaian pendidikan yang berkualitas.
