Abstract

IntroductionThe increased development of Islamic banks in Indonesia is one way the government promotes state financial inclusion. On January 27, 2021, the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan) formally granted permission for corporate mergers. Subsequently, on February 1, 2021, BRI Syariah, Bank Syariah Mandiri, and BNI Syariah, three state-owned Islamic banking companies, were officially merged to form Bank Syariah Indonesia. This study evaluates the performance efficiency of these three Islamic banks before and after the merger and compares it to other state-owned conventional banks using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach with the BCC model framework.ObjectivesThis study aims to compare Bank Syariah Indonesia's efficiency levels before and after the merger and assesses its performance relative to other state-owned conventional banks.MethodThis research utilizes the DEA method with the BCC model to analyze quarterly financial data from March 2019 to March 2023. The inputs considered are total deposits, personal expenses, and fixed assets, whereas the outputs are financing (loans) and income.ResultsThe results indicate that Bank Syariah Indonesia is more efficient than other conventional state-owned banks after the merger. However, pre-merger, BRI Syariah and BNI Syariah ranked first in efficiency compared to conventional state-owned banks. The post-merger analysis shows a stable and high-efficiency level for Bank Syariah Indonesia despite fluctuations.ImplicationsThe findings suggest that the merger improved Bank Syariah Indonesia's performance efficiency, making it a benchmark for state-owned banks. The study highlights the importance of mergers in enhancing efficiency and suggests areas for further improvement, such as risk-mitigation strategies during economic downturns.Originality/NoveltyThis study provides additional literature on the impact of mergers on the efficiency of Islamic banks in Indonesia. It extends previous studies on Islamic bank mergers by offering insights into performance differences before and after the merger, using Bank Syariah Indonesia as a case study.

Abstract

IntroductionThe flexibility of the cash waqf enables this Islamic social financial instrument to enter various sectors. Along with technological developments, various forms of cash waqf, such as stock waqf, have emerged. However, stock waqf practices in Indonesia face numerous challenges, leading to limited public awareness. This study aims to identify the primary problems and solutions in the practice of stock waqf in Indonesia.ObjectivesThe objective of this research is to examine the key problems and propose solutions for the practice of stock waqf in Indonesia by leveraging the Analytic Network Process (ANP) for data analysis. MethodThis study combines literature data with in-depth interviews involving stock waqf stakeholders, including the Indonesia Waqf Board (BWI), Indonesia Stock Exchange, waqf issuers, and stock waqf investors. The ANP method was used to analyze the data and identify priority issues and solutions.ResultsThe research reveals that the primary issue in stock waqf practice is low literacy about stock waqf, with the solution being the socialization of stock waqf and enhancing Sharia stock literacy. Additionally, the study identifies the low literacy of productive waqf, public doubts about the sharia compliance of stock waqf, nazir's limited understanding of stock waqf, and the lack of detailed regulations as significant challenges. Corresponding solutions include the socialization of productive waqf, education on Islamic capital market investments, improved nazir training, and the establishment of specific regulations for stock waqf. ImplicationsThe findings suggest that increasing public awareness and education about stock waqf and Sharia stocks, along with better training for nazir and clear regulations, are essential for optimizing the development of stock waqf in Indonesia. This study provides valuable references for BWI and the Indonesia Stock Exchange to enhance the practice and management of stock waqf.Originality/NoveltyThis study offers a comprehensive analysis of the problems and solutions for stock waqf in Indonesia from the perspective of stakeholders. This study contributes to the limited literature on individual stock waqf and employs the ANP method to propose practical solutions for improving stock waqf practices.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the direct and indirect effectiveness of Islamic microfinance services, particularly financing products, in enhancing the welfare of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) in Lamongan, with Baitul Tamwil Muhammadiyah (BTM) Mulia Babat as the case study. The partial least square-structural equation modeling method is used in this quantitative study, examining data from 52 respondents, where the respondent data are BTM Mulia Babat business financing customers. The findings of this study found that Islamic microfinance services and business assistance directly have a positive impact on SMEs' increase in income. However, Islamic microfinance services and business assistance indirectly do not impact SMEs' welfare. Despite the increase in SMEs' income, it directly impacts SMEs' welfare. The novelty of this study is to identify the effectiveness of Islamic microfinance institutions in improving the welfare of SMEs. This study presents evidence of the impact of Islamic microfinance institutions on the welfare of micro and medium entrepreneurs. It can encourage more Islamic microfinance programs to offer feasible Islamic microfinance services as an alternative to boosting SMEs in the regions. This study's empirical implications and findings highlight the importance of business assistance from Islamic MIFs as business financing providers to support businesses.
