Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to gain further understanding of how particular insect species respons to different host plants. This research isconsidered as preliminary research in integrated pest management for Spodoptera exigua. We report herein the consumption and utilizationof green onion (Allium fistulosum), caisin (Brassica rapa subsp. Parachinensis) and celery (Apium graveolens) by Spodoptera exigua. Theevaluation of indices of food consumption, growth and food utilization showed that caisin (Brassica rapa subsp. Parachinensis) was the bestfood for the last instar larvae of S. exigua as compared with celery or green onion. Growth rates and efficiency of conversion of ingestedfood to biomass (ECI) were significantly higher for larvae fed caisin (11.93%) than for those given green onion (8.06%) or celery (7.74%)Although the protein content of caisin (2.23%) was a bit lower than that of green onion (2.45%) but higher than celery (1.28%), we suspectthat the larvae performed best in caisin due to good balance between protein and carbohydrate as well as water content in caisin as comparedwith other host plants.

Abstract

Baluran National Park Situbondo have function to field study, and plays a role as the ecotourism area. Bekol savanna is part of Baluran National Park which has been invaded by Acacia (A. nilotica) plants. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity and abundant of the insects in A. nilotica in Bekol savannas park, Baluran national park. The research method has been employed with the make plots in the savannas dimensions of 20 x 20 m. Insect was collected by flying trap without antractan for four weeks. Insect identification was carried out at Entomology Laboratory SITH ITB. Diversty index was analyzed by Shannon’s index and abundant index with the Simpson’s index. The results showed that the 527 insects caught consisted of 5 insect orders that lived on A. nilotica in the Bekol Savanna . Diversity of insect have the range medium from H= 1,73186 – 2,29266. Insect diversity has high in the plot III and low from plot II. Abundant index was known that the familia Formicidae is dominance species with Polyrhachis sp=45,77465 % plot I, Crematogaster sp= 62,2807% plot II, Crematogaster sp= 45,45455% plot III and plot IV Crematogaster sp= 38,67925%. The low of diversity index because just many insect could live in the A. nilotica and some species likes Caryedon serattus, Zyras compressicornis, Crematogaster sp and Trigona lavaiceps was collected from four site reseach. The abundant of familia Formicidae because they have mutuallystic symbiosis with the A. nilotica. From the result we could conclude that diversity and abundant insect dependent to the plant and interaction have done.

Abstract

Research on the effect of B. thuringiensis sublethal infection to the chance of H. armigera to resurgence has been conducted. Third instar insects were used and the concentration applied were 0 ppm, 150 ppm, 300 ppm, 450 ppm and 600 ppm. The result showed that along with the increase of B. thuringiensis infection, the number and the viability of the eggs production declined. In addition, the weight difference between the 3rd and the 4th instar became higher however between the 4th and the 5th became lower, moreover, the weight of female imago decreased, the life longevity of male and female imago were shorter and longer, respectively, along with the increase of B. thuringiensis infection. The possibility for resurgence will be discussed.

Abstract

The aim of the experiments reported in this article is to gain further insight into the nature and control of dietary compensatory feeding: i.e., to investigate whether one or another nutrient is more important in eliciting compensatory behavior. The response of 4th-instar Manduca sexta to dilution of either protein or carbohydrate nutrient in the diet was measured. In these experiments, ratio of protein and carbohydrate selected, food consumption and utilization parameters were measured. Fourth instars were given the opportunity to self-select between two defined diets, one which differed between treatments in protein content and a complementary diet, which contained the standard amount of carbohydrate and did not vary from treatment to treatment. In response to protein dilution, the larvae compensated by consuming more of both the protein-containing and carbohydrate containing diets. In most of the cases, this compensation was sufficient to maintain normal growth, although AD, ECI, and ECD declined with the reduction of protein in the protein-containing diet. When larvae self-selected from a standard protein diet that was paired with a carbohydrate diet with one of six concentrations of sucrose, they responded by eating more from the protein-containing diet as the sucrose content of the carbohydrate diet declined. The growth and efficiency of food use was little affected over the entire range of carbohydrate diets tested.Although apparently the regulation of carbohydrate intake is not as strong as the regulation of protein intake, it seems that in response to dilution, the larvae select at each concentration a protein:carbohydrate ratio that is favorable to them.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the responses of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) larvae to Bacillus thuringiensis and Neem extract. Therefore, dosage mortality studies using bioassay method were conducted on populations of P. xylostella from Garut, Pangalengan, and Lembang. Tests with B. thuringiensis, resulted in no significant differences in susceptibility between Garut and Pangalengan populations. However, those two populations were differed significantly in susceptibility to Lembang population which had the highest value of LC50 with resistance factor of 2.63, suggesting that a significant level of resistance against B. thuringiensis already occurred. In response to neem extract treatment, the results, as expected showed that there were no significant differences in susceptibility among the three populations. This indicates that neem extract could be used to control P. xylostella that has developed resistance to B. thuringiensis.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the main vector of dengue fever. In Indonesia, insecticides, especially pyrethroids, such as permethrin, have been effectively used to control Ae. aegypti. Notwithstanding that permethrin has been used since 1980s, information regarding the status and development of resistance of Ae. aegypti to permethrin is still limited and need further update. This study was conducted using the WHO standard test method. The aims was to determine the resistance status, and changes in resistance level of four field strains (Palu, Makassar, Bandung, Bogor) and susceptible strain (VCRU) of Ae. aegypti after the selection with permethrin for five generations. The results showed that resistance status of all field strains to permethrin were considered as high. The value of RR50 ranged between 10.5 to 25.7 fold. Bandung strain had the highest value of  RR50 (22.5 fold), while Makassar strain had the lowest value of RR50 (10.5 fold). The fifth generation  (F5) of  five  selected  Ae. aegypti strains had the level of resistance 5 to 18 times higher than their parental. Knowledge of  resistance status in a given area accompanied with the understanding  about the development of resistance can be used to design a better vector management.
