Abstract

Indonesia has a potential to be exposed to the threat of dengue hemorrhagic fever with the point vector, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, so development need to be stopped. The use of synthetic larvicides in eradicating mosquito larvae can cause environmental pollution. To reduce it, an alternative is needed using plant larvacides with banana leaf. Banana leaves are obtained from Candi Sidoarjo. Ethanol extract of banana leaf contains tannin compounds, alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, and flavonoids which can be used as larvicides. This research was conducted to determine the toxic effects of banana leaf extract (Musa paradisiaca L.) on the larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquito mortality. This research was conducted using the post test only the control group design with 6 treatment groups including control (aquades) and banana leaf extract concentrations of 1000 ppm, 2000 ppm, 3000 ppm, 4000 ppm, 5000 ppm. This study used third instar larvae, each test group countaining 20 larvae with 4 repetitions. That obtained were analyzed using data and probit tests. The results of this study that banana leaf extract has a toxic effect on Aedes aegypti mosquito larvae with LC50 at a concentration of 4638 ppm.

Abstract

Flea is ectoparasite that live outside the body of their host, one of which host is a cat. Flea infestation have potential to cause dermatitis or a abnormality skin known as flea allergic dermatitis. Cat is an animal that often interact with humans, one of them as a pet, so they have potential to transmit flea to human. The purpose of this study was to identify and determine the prevalence of flea in wild cat in several markets. Sample that used in this study are feral cats taken from the Larangan Market and Gading Fajar Market in Sidoarjo distric. The feral cats obtained were then examined for the presence and type of flea. The results of the examination showed that the prevalence of flea infection in feral cats in the Larangan Market was 81.8% and the Gading Fajar Market was 54.5%. The identification result showed that the fleas found in feral cats from the Larangan Market and Gading Fajar Market were all Ctenocephalides felis. The difference in prevalence is caused by the different environmental conditions in the two markets. A dirty environment has the potential to increase the number of cats infected with fleas.

Previous studies have shown that bromelin can significantly reduce CD4+ lymphocytes, which are included in inflammatory diseases. One of the inflammatory diseases is diabetes mellitus. Blood glucose levels can be lowered by pineapple extract as it contains bromelin, and bromelin most widely found on the stem. The test animals used white rat strain wistar (Rattus norvegicus L.) with weight is 250-300 gram acclimated for seven days. The research was divided six treatment groups: positive control, negative control, P1 (25% concentration), P2 (50% concentration), P3 (75% concentration), P4 (100% concentration). After treatment for rat in category or sampel was administered pineapple stem extract for 14 days after that experiment status blood glucose level. The results showed that rat had increased (hyperglicemic) after alloxan induced, and also in blood glucose levels in all treatment. the biggest decrease was in P4 is 44 mgdl. The statistic of Kruskal-Wallis test showed that the decrease of rat blood glucose concentration at various concentration of pineapple extract influence signifificantly. According to the result that conclusion is the difference of pineapple extract concentration (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) influence for decrease blood glucose levels and decreasing blood glucose level after 14 days, but in this time blood glucose not returned as normal conditions.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is caused by the dengue virus which is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Prevention of DHF can be done by using larvicides. Synthetic chemical larvicides are considered to have side effects in long-term use and can cause environmental pollution. So we need an alternative larvicides with natural ingredients from plants, namely Japanese Papaya plants. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Japanese Papaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) leaf extract on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. This type of research uses an experimental study design. This study used 6 treatments with 4 repetitions consisting of control without treatment, P1 (0.2%), P2 (0.4%), P3 (0.6%), P4 (0.8%), and P5 (1%). Observations were made for 48 hours. From the research results obtained LC50 of 1.095%. The results of statistical tests using One-Way ANOVA showed that there was a significant effect on the mortality of mosquito larvae.
