Abstract

Abstract

The Moslem community in Haruku Island has been discriminated since the colonial era. Before the Europeans entered the Moluccas Islands, colonizing and Christianizing most negeri in Central Moluccas, the great negeri of Haruku Island in Uli Hatuhaha consisting of Pelauw, Hulaliuw, Rohomoni, Kailolo and Kabauw were Moslem dominated areas. In the colonial era, the Moslem community in central Moluccas did not enjoy the same access and opportunity as the Christian community to education. This affected the economic, political and social life of Moslem communities until the early days of the Indonesian struggle for Independence. Besides discrimination by the Dutch colonizers, the Moslem community in Haruku Island was also subordinated by other groups (Moslems and Christians). This research studies the identity construction and change occurring in the Moslem community in Pelauw, Haruku Island district, Central Maluku regency. This research observes that the Moslem Maluku community in Pelauw negeri has multiple identities. Identity construction and social change have a dynamic that occur concurrently with particular moments in the social life of the people of Moluccas. Another interesting finding is that religion plays an important role in influencing human mentality and human resources in Pelauw. They construct the current identity of the Pelauw people. Keywords: identity, discrimination, social change

Abstract

Ethnic and religious diversity have often been used as a source of conflict between different groups of people. However, pluralistic societies’ local wisdom offers a potential tool for long-term building of peace. This study investigated the practice of diversity management by post-conflict communities in Tual, Maluku Province, Indonesia, along with the factors that support community-based diversity management and forms of activities that contribute to the creation of social harmony in the city. Research was conducted in 2017 through a field study, using qualitative methods to observe the ways in which community groups in the region developed post-conflict social harmony, with data constantly updated to determine the dynamics of diversity management in the community. Two important findings were made. First, shared cultural and historical factors, availability of public spaces for encounters, and traumatic transformation influence and support diversity management and contribute to the creation of social harmony in Tual. And second, several communities were built by community initiatives as the foundation of managing diversity.Community daily activities proved to be effective in ensuring long-term peace building. Based on the reality of social lives in Tual, this study confirmed that a cultural approach is still relevant in efforts to end communal conflict and build social harmony, and synergy between stakeholders is needed to strengthen the social and cultural capital owned by community groups in conflict areas.

Abstract

This article aims to explain in a ritualistic religiosity Aroha, a typical ritual Muslim community in the State Hatuhaha Pelauw Haruku Island District of Central Maluku district to honor the Prophet Muhammad, Islam ancestors and broadcasters. It is assumed that there is an attitude in the ritual religiosity into a wealth of traditions and diversity of religious practices of Islam in Indonesia. This paper is built from the author's observation on the implementation of ritual Aroha in 2011 and interviews with several informants in Pelauw State. Analysis of the implementation of these rituals using interpretation models developed by Clifford Geertz. Encountered that first, the implementation of Aroha is a moment to evaluate the behavior of any person or citizens of the country or the people, and fix it in everyday life, which in this study is understood as part of the local community religiosity. Second, Aroha becomes effective in order to understand the dialectic of tradition and religion, as in the implementation of Aroha each person carrying out the teaching of religion and custom together, and make the values Aroha as a guide in building individual and group life. In this regard Aroha has the meaning "purification" or "born again", and can be also related with the tradition of forgiveness or atonement in religious practices in general.

Abstract

The phenomenon of radicalism and religious extremism has strengthened in Indonesia in the last decade, even though Indonesia is known as a friendly and tolerant country. In fact, the religious education provided from elementary school to university has apparently not been able to build an inclusive religious perspective and attitude. It is assumed that religious education, including Christian Religious Education, which is taught is still oriented towards teaching a narrow doctrine so that many do not see diversity as an important context in the religious learning process. This article aims to promote inclusive religious education as the foundation of religious moderation in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative approach, with the method of analyzing the results of previous studies related to the policy and implementation of religious education in Indonesia, as well as conducting observations and interviews regarding the practice of religious education in schools on a macro basis, and making comparisons with the results of available research. This study finds that a paradigm shift in religious education is needed, both at the level of policymakers and education implementers. This study offers an inclusive religious education paradigm, which is seen as being able to change the perspective and attitude of exclusive religion because it prioritizes mutual trust and respect for human equality.

Abstract

Educational parenting patterns for children in interfaith marriages certainly have an impact on children's understanding of religious identity and interactions with the surrounding environment. Through a qualitative approach and interviews with parents in interfaith marriages, this research tries to understand parents' experiences in raising children in the context of religious differences.
