Abstract

The aims of the research are to analyze how metadiscourse types is used to accompany the moves in English abstract section of undergraduate students' final project, to explain how rhetorical moves are used in English abstract section of undergraduate students' final project, and to enlighten how metadiscourse functions are applied in relation to the rhetorical moves in the abstract section of undergraduate students' final project at Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe, Tuban. The research was descriptive qualitative research in order to answer the research problem definitely. The research identifies the meaning reflected and particular characteristic in the use of rhetorical moves and metadiscourse. The result shows that the use of interactive metadiscourse tends to be dominant in students' final project abstracts. Almost all of students write the methods of rhetorical moves in their abstract. The move gives a good indication of the information on data, procedures and methods used. The further researchers on teaching writing the final project abstract are suggested to conduct both metadiscourse and rhetorical moves aspect so the students will become more capable of determining the particular kinds of metadiscourse which should be applied in each move of writing abstract.

Abstract

This study is a study of the Language Style in a speech on Youtube com with its subtitle,  entitled: President-elect Joe Biden stands on stage with his wife Jill, Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020, in Wilmington, Del. Transcript of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory speech Saturday night in Wilmington, Del., as delivered. Provided by the Biden campaign: The Language Style used by Joe Biden are: Repetition, Metaphor, Euphemism, Persuasion, Climax, Anti-tesis, Repetition, Rhetoric, Idiom, Literal Meaning, Persuasive Slogan.Language Style used by Joe Biden could give a positive comprehension, enthusiasm, motivation, understanding for the effectiveness of the audience as well as the listeners and the viewers. This  can be understood  from his speech that the audience often pay attention in each language style (can be seen on Joe Biden makes a history speech " in Wilmington.Messages can enhance 'understanding' or 'message comprehension'. The use of  Language Style  in Joe Biden speech can facilitate understanding. Complex ideas may be conveyed more clearly through Language Style or rhetoric. Stored messages can help to 'alert' a message. The use of various syntactic patterns or figurative words can help audiences remember an important element in the message. Abstract

Deixis is an utterance of meaning based on the word and phrase in the context of utterance. Deixis is divided into five categories. They are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Deixis is important to be analyzed, because if we read some conversations in the movie or the other literary works, sometimes we will be confused about the meaning in that conversation. It means that deixis is the way to analyze unspeakable context. This study examines types of deixis used in Daughter of the Wolf movie. Research method which was used is qualitative. Type of study is a document analysis. The writer watched Daughter of the Wolf movie and downloaded the scripts to classify type of deixis and  the writer did analysis. Based on finding the writer found the type of deixis in Daughter of the Wolf movie, there are four categories of deixis, they are person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, and discourse deixis, and also meaning of deixis used in Daughter of the Wolf movie. The writer suggests, for the future writers who are interesting in doing similar research, this research will give contribution to comprehend the types of deixis and also this research can give inspiration and guidance for the future researchers to be more careful in doing research Keywords: Pragmatics, Deixis, Daughter of the Wolf

Abstract

This study aimed to know the students’ strategies to decrease anxiety in speaking English class at the sixth semester of the informatics engineering study program. The researcher used descriptive method because it is referred to describe the students’ strategy anxiety. To collect the data, the instrument used in this study are classroom observations and questionnaire. The findings reveal that students engage in positive self-talk, visualization, regular practice, and relaxation techniques to boost their confidence. Peer support and feedback also play significant roles in creating a supportive learning environment. Classroom observations highlight the importance of a positive classroom atmosphere fostered by encouraging lecturers and collaborative activities. Additionally, the use of technology and institutional resources such as counseling services are found to be effective in reducing language anxiety.The questionnaire given includes five strategies namely preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation. The respondent of this research was the sixth semester of the informatics engineering study program which consisted of 32 students. So the researcher can conclude that the students gave agree about the strategy to reduce anxiety in speaking English. Where the strategy makes students can improve their skills, especially in speaking skills and make the students used the strategy where they speaking English. The research findings showed that students' agreement of Preparation was 101, Relaxation 117, Positif Thinking 121, Peer Seeking 110 and Resignation 108. It can be assumed that the percentage of human experience was 63%, for Preparation, 73% for Relaxation, 75% for Positive Thinking, 68,75 for Peer Seeking and 67,50% for Resignation

Abstract

The main goal of this research is intended to find the differences and similarities between English and Indonesian noun phrases. The problem to study is to know the patterns of English and Indonesian Noun Phrases. However, it will be detected the similarities and differences between the two languages. The patterns of English and Indonesian Noun Phrases are analyzed by using combination English and Indonesian Noun Phrases. The data, the writer uses contrastive analysis method to determine their similarities and differences; the source of the research; understanding English grammar, vocabulary, basic English usage, introduction to linguistic; and Tata Bahasa Praktis Bahasa Indonesia and syntaxes all data collected above are analyzed by contrastive analysis. The result of the data analysis reveals that there are differences between English and Indonesian Noun Phrases; namely; adjective as modifier; possessive adjective or possessive noun as modifier; participate as modifier, noun as modifier and adverb as modifier. Meanwhile, there are three kinds of similarities that is 1) the similarities of Head-Modifier; the similarities of Modifier-Head and the similarities of Modifier-Head-Modifier, 2) the similarities element forming noun phrases, namely prepositional phrases, adverbs, numerals, noun, demonstrative adjective, indefinite adjective and non-finite clause, 3) the similarities in order of element forming noun phrases; namely the order of determiner and the order of modifier. By knowing the differences and the similarities above; it is expected that the teacher can explain the noun phrases both English and Indonesian well.

Abstract

This study aims to know the Contrastive Analysis Between English And Indonesian Suffixes In “The Rainbow Troops” Novel. This study was design in content analysis qualitative research because the object of the study was a novel. Moreover, as the data was in the form of words and field notes, so the data were analysed qualitatively. The researcher also conducted the analysis used contrastive analysis to more focus on differences and similarities of English and Indonesian suffixes. The instrument used to collect the data is the form of checklist. Based on the background of the case above, this study is conducted to analyze kinds of English and Indonesian suffixes and also analyze differences and similarities between English and Indonesian suffixes The result of this study showed in term on kinds of English and Indonesian suffixes are: a. Noun (-acne, -ence, -er, -or, -ist, -ian, -tion, -tion, -ness, ion, -ing, -ment, -ity, -ism, -dom, -ship, -ent, -ary, -ure, -tude, -hood, -eer, logy, -age, -ant); b. Verb (-ize/-ise, -ate, -ify, -en); c. Adverb (-ly) and; d. Adjective (al, -ar, -ic, -ical, -able/-ible, -ous, -ful, -less, -ish, -ed, -ive, -er, -ate,-ent, est). As for the Indonesian suffixes there are: a. Noun (-an, -is, -isasi, -isme, -itas, -wan/wati, -man); b. Verb (-an, -i, -kan); c. Adjective (-an, -al, -if, -is, -i, -iah). The result about the differences and similarities of suffixes between English and Indonesian suffixes in “The Rainbow Troops” Novel are: first the difference in English suffixes, the researcher only find any adverb (-ly, lovely, politely, wisely, etc). As for the Indonesian suffixes in “Laskar Pelangi” is nominal which include: (-an, jutaan, ribuan ratusan, etc). The similarities of suffixes English and Indonesian have three similarities, there are: Noun, Adjective and Verb.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate toward the implementation of the Kaizen method on developing speaking skills in students of various educational levels and to investigate their responses. The study included a group of nine students called the Kaizen Group. To provide a thorough analysis of the impact of the Kaizen technique on speaking skill, the research design included descriptive qualitative research. The Kaizen Group was exposed to the Kaizen method. The data analysis was descriptive which gathered from pre-test, 3 days treatment, and post-tests. Observations, and feedback surveys were used to collect data. According to the research findings, students in the Kaizen Group improved positively in their speaking skills after using the Kaizen method. The Kaizen approach's gradual and continuous nature helped students to gain confidence and achieve greater fluency and accuracy in their spoken English. Overall, this study reveals the usefulness of the Kaizen method in improving speaking skills at various educational levels. The Kaizen Group's positive achievements imply that adopting the Kaizen philosophy into language teaching can be a helpful technique for fostering language competency and encouraging ongoing growth in students' speaking abilities.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out the answer of statement of the problem: What is teaching of life found in Michael Jackson’s songs and how it described in Michael Jackson’s songs. This study uses descriptive qualitative research design in which it starts collecting and review research literature to provide the data and examine data for intention of the study. This research uses objective approach in analyzing the study, because the writer does not need to study at author’s life, background of the work, or background of the society but just analyzed the whole itself. The object of the study is Michael Jackson text songs which focused on the Teaching of life that found in Michael Jackson’s songs. The result of this research is that the writer finds some teaching of life related with moral, peace and love in Michael Jackson’s Songs. First, the writer finds teaching of life about moral covering struggle and equality in Michael Jackson’s songs entitled “Beat It”, “Black or White”. Second, the writer finds teaching of life about peace covering careness, brotherhood, and world peace in Michael Jackson’s songs entitled “Heal The World”, “Earth Song” and “Black Or White”. The last, the writer finds teaching of life about love covering love between human being and the importance of love for human life in Michael Jackson’s song entitled “I’ll Be There” and “Heal The World”.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the pragmatics speech act classification 1) What are the types of illocutionary act 2) What is the most dominant types of illocutionary act performed by the main character in the movie titled Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Here, this research used a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data provide. From the data , the researcher discovered 76 utterances which is spoken by the main character that contain four out five speech act s by Searle’s theory (1969). In this study, the result shows as expressive holds the top among all speech acts types with the 28 data found (37%). The other speech act show Directive as the second position with 27 data (35%), the third is Representative with 16 data (21%), fourth is Commissive 5 (7%) data, and the last position is Declarative with 0 data (0%).
