Abstract

This study examines how emotions are expressed through language in Inside Out (2015) using Saussure’s semiotic theory. The research focuses on how dialogues spoken by Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger function as signs that represent Riley’s emotional states. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes the relationship between signifier (words and phrases used in dialogue) and signified (the intended emotional meaning). The findings indicate that emotions in the film are conveyed through specific verbal expressions, showing how language operates as a system of signs. This research contributes to the field of semiotics by providing insights into how words shape emotional meaning in animated storytelling.

Abstract

In discourse, speech is not only considered as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a means to maintain or change power relations in society. One of the clearest examples of the use of speech in discourse to change social change occurred in The Black Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1968 in the United States. Based on the interest in studying Malcolm X's speech further, the thesis writer decided to analyze Malcolm X's speech at the Oxford Union Debate using Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis framework with a qualitative method that will focus on linguistic issues as part of social and humanitarian issues. The results of this study showed deconstruction result of Malcolm X's speech text by analyzing various linguistic features from the dimensions of text practice (including positive and negative lexical items, key terms of ideology and belief, modality, and rhetorical devices), discursive practice (including intertextuality and shared knowledge), and sociocultural (including formality and personal pronouns), then continued with a discussion of the relationship between discourse, power, and ideology and the role of Malcolm X's speech in the historical context at that time. It can be concluded that Malcolm X's speech highlights his advocacy for revolutionary justice and self-defense for oppressed black people. He also challenged the power structures of his time, opposing segregation and exposing the hypocrisy of the American and Western governments with white supremacy and colonialism behind the mask of democracy.

Abstract

This study examines cultural resistance through Bri’s rap in On the Come Up by Angie Thomas. Using Stephen Duncombe’s framework, this qualitative research explores how Bri’s rap serves as a free space for self-expression, a tool for challenging oppression, and a catalyst for political awareness. The findings indicate that Bri’s rap creates free spaces where marginalized voices can reclaim agency, reject stereotypes, and resist systemic control, and a stepping stone to political action. Additionally, her lyrics highlight racial profiling, media misrepresentation, and the exploitation of Black artists, reinforcing rap’s role as a medium of activism. Ultimately, this study concludes that Bri’s rap is not just a form of entertainment but a means of identity negotiation, empowerment, and collective resistance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Adele's song Easy on Me through Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic approach using descriptive qualitative methods. The research data consists of song lyrics which are then interpreted using Lacan's main concepts, namely the Real, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic. The analysis shows that the lyrics represent the inner conflict of the lyrical character in facing separation and an unresolved past. The request to “go easy on me” reflects the need for recognition in the Imaginary realm, as well as the guilt and responsibility present in the Symbolic. Meanwhile, emotional experiences that cannot be fully expressed through language describe the presence of the Real as something traumatic and unattainable. The results of this study show that song lyrics are not only emotional expressions, but also spaces of unconscious representation that can be understood through Lacan's psychoanalytic framework. In conclusion, this study points out that Adele’s song matches with Lacanian perspectives on psychoanalysis that mediates trauma through language of everyday life.

Abstract

This study examines how bad social life conditions contribute to the development of thanatophobia in the main character, Mickey Barnes, in Bong Joon Ho’s film Mickey 17 (2025). Thanatophobia refers to the fear of death and the anxiety related to mortality. Using a qualitative descriptive method and applying Ernest Becker’s theory of death anxiety, this research analyzes selected dialogues, scenes, and character interactions that reflect social degradation, economic instability, dehumanization, and authoritarian control. The findings reveal that Mickey’s poor social environment marked by economic desperation, manipulation, violence, disposability, and loss of autonomy intensifies his awareness of mortality and reinforces his existential anxiety. The study concludes that Mickey’s fear of death does not emerge merely from repeated physical deaths, but from the social system that treats him as replaceable and strips him of human dignity.

Abstract

This article examines the role of purpose in shaping Mufasa’s resilience in Barry Jenkins’s film Mufasa: The Lion King (2024). Derived from an undergraduate thesis, this study focuses on purpose as one of the main reasons behind resilience based on Edith Grotberg’s resilience theory. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the data are taken from Mufasa’s dialogues, actions, and narrative contexts presented in the film. The findings reveal that Mufasa’s strong sense of purpose particularly his commitment to protecting others, maintaining justice, and upholding the Circle of Life functions as a central psychological force that motivates him to endure hardship, loss, and adversity. Purpose enables Mufasa not only to survive difficult circumstances but also to transform suffering into moral strength and leadership capacity. This study concludes that purpose is a foundational element of Mufasa’s resilience.
