Abstract

This article informs how to use Smart Fingers technique in teaching English tenses. The Smart Fingers technique is a new teaching English tenses technique which   will help teachers or students to learn and master 16 English tenses fast due to its simplicity in its implementing. Meanwhile, tense itself is a part of grammar material that is often avoided by several English learners as it is very complicated lesson. In fact, English sentences used in daily activity and especially academic field consist of tenses. Thus, smart fingers technique becomes an alternative technique to overcome that problem. The use of this technique is so simple, just need fingers of hands. This article also discusses the kinds, functions of Smart Fingers and their achievement indicators. There are five kinds of Smart Fingers technique, namely Smart Fingers (SF) ”Memorizing Tenses”, SF “Naming Tenses”, SF “Auxiliary Verbs”, SF “Verbs vs To Be”, SF “Smart Short Tenses”. Each kind of Smart Fingers technique has different functions and achievement indicators.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the influence of teaching English tenses through group discussion method towards student’s achievement in tenses mastery at 1st semester students of English department of Mathla’ul Anwar University, Banten. In this research, writer employs the quantitative approach that based on the result of proposing item tests to respodents of the research. Meanwhile design with the characteristics of experimental method, here the researcher conducted test as an instrument. The research done through three steps: first, the writer selected students of Mathla’aul Anwar University as subjects, second, the writer taught tenses through group discussion method at experimental class, while control class taught by giving homework. The treatment is processed by a pretest, treatment, and ended by posttest. It is done to know which one is more effective towards students’ achievement in tenses matery. After that, the writer calculated and analysed the data. The last step is reporting the result. The result of posttest show us that the mean of experimental class is higher than at control class. The result of calculation of t-test shows that tcount (2,63) is higher than tcritic (1,67) in 5% level significant. These tell us that teaching tenses through group discussion method is effective to improve the students’ achievement in tenses matery. The research hypotheses is “there is significance influence of using group discussion method in teaching tenses towards students’ achievement in tenses matery”. From all the data above, the writer concludes that his hypotheses is justifiable.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effect of Dictogloss Technique as learning media to improve students’ narrative writing at the second grade students of SMA 11 Pandeglang. The researcher paper employs the quantitative research design with the quasi experiment. It used test to collect the data involving observation pre-test and post-test. The observation is conducted before the research was done. The researcher asked to the teacher and students about teaching learning process in the class. The pre-test is conducted to know their basic writingmastery. And the post-test conducted after the treatment. The data analysis is conducted to identify important finding as it is expected by the objective of the research.Based on the results of research and analysis of the data, obtained mean of post-test score in the experiment class was 72,89and the control class was 43,58. It shows that there are significant differences from the results obtained both of classes. The results of hypothesis testing by using Mann-Whitney found that on degree of significance 5% ( α= 0.5) two-tailed was 0,00 was α= 0,05 or two-tailed< α= 0.5 (0,00<0,05) it means was rejected and was accepted.The findings reveal that the effect of Dictogloss Technique is helpful and easy to conduct. In addition, this media can improve students’ narrative writing. In relations to the students response on the media, found that students response the media positively. Moreover, they feel happy and enthusiastic to practice this media in narrative writing mastery.Based on finding of research, it is significant for the teacher to choose the appropriate media for improving students’ narrative writing mastery, particularly Dictogloss Technique as mentioned above.

Abstract

THE IMPROVING OF ENGLISH COMPETENCE FOR LECTURERS OF FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION OF UNIVERSITY OF MATHLA’UL ANWAR BANTEN. This community service activity is motivated by the thought that the need for lecturers to have good competence in using English in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. With the hope that through its application, students become more enthusiastic in learning. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide scientific assistance to the lecturers of FKIP Unma Banten in using English in the teaching and learning process. While the benefits of this activity are to have a positive effect on the lecturers of FKIP Unma Banten in communicating using English in class and the increasing enthusiasm and achievement of FKIP Unma Banten students in learning. This service activity was carried out in the form of short training for two meetings with members of 10 lecturers held in the hall of FKIP Unma Banten. The first meeting discussed the importance of English, introducing word, clause, and sentences, mastering tenses by using smart fingers technique. The second meeting was a deepening of the material followed by the practice of TOEFL questions and the practice of speaking English in everyday life with simple sentences by participants of FKIP Unma Banten lecturers. The method used in this community service activity is the lecture method, question and answer, discussion and demonstration methods. Based on observations during this community service activity, several positive results were obtained. The results of this community service are the increased insight of FKIP Unma Banten lecturers on English language material and its application in the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

Abstract

IMPROVEMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE FOR UNMA BANTEN LECTURERS THROUGH TOEFL STRATEGIES AND PREDICTIONS TRAINING. English language training activity in community service is intended to improve English language competence, especially when answering questions in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for lecturers at Mathla'ul Anwar University (Unma), Banten. This training was conducted in the form of a short one-day training with 12 lecturers taking place in the Unma Banten hall. The material covered was TOEFL at glance, 12 Strategies for Listening comprehen-tones, 25 strategies for Structure and written expressions, and 6 strategies for reading comprehension. The training begins with a pre-test and ends with a post-test TOEFL questions as well as a prediction of scores and how to calculate TOEFL scores obtained by all trainees. The methods used in community service activities were lecturing, question and answer, discussion and demonstration methods. Based on observations during the community service activities, several positive results were obtained including: (1) The participants showed very high attention to the training material, (2) The participants showed a positive reaction to the material in answering the questions about the questions and how to calculate their values in the training, (3) The participants actively asked questions and revealed the problems they were experiencing. during this time and they are eager to implement strategies/skills in doing on the TOEFL problem, (4) The participants looked serious and confident in discussing the exercises on the TOEFL questions. The result of this community service is the increasing insight of Unma Banten lecturers about the TOEFL and how to answer questions and how to calculate the TOEFL score. In addition, they are more confident in using English and are motivated to learn English well.

Abstract

IMPROVEMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE OF SMAN 11 PANDEGLANG STUDENTS THROUGH “HOW TO SPEAK ENGLISH CONFIDENTLY” ENGLISH TRAINING. Confidence is the key of success in education. Armed with confidence, every student could certainly develop into a human with a good character. Student who are confident will be able to accept himself, ready to accept the challenge in the sense of want to try something new even though aware that the possibility of one must have and tend to be more succesful in doing what he want. The objective of this community service activity is to provide scientific assistance to the students of SMAN 11 Pandeglang Banten in learning English,especially how to speak English confidently. The community service activity was carried out in the form of short training with members of 40 students held in the hall of SMAN 11 Pandeglang Banten. The method used in this community service activity is lecturing, drilling, questioning and practicing. Based on observation during this community service activity, several results were obtained. The result of this community service activity are increased insight of students of SMAN 11 Pandeglang Banten on speaking english confidently. The students in SMAN 11 Pandeglang Banten can speak fluently, dare to ask and declare in front of the class.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the emperical evidence of The Effect of Using Duolingo Application Toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at The Eighth Grade of SMPN 2 Banjarsari Lebak-Banten In Acaddemic Year 2021/2022. In this research, the quantitative methode was used and the research design was a quasi-experimental. To conduct the research, 76 students of eighth grade student of SMPN 2 Banjarsari Lebak academic year of 2021/2022 are choosen as the sample in this research. They were VIII A class as the experimental class, and VIII B class as the control class. Each class consisted of 25 students. This number was taken as the sample of this research by using Mr.Excel and SPSS 25. Duolingo application was used as an instrument in the experimental class while the control class uses the Hello English Application. Based on the calculation, the post-test mean scores of the experimental class was 70.12 while that of the control class was 59.36. The researcher got the result from testing with SPSS 25 t-test obtained the t-count =6.301in control class and signification value (p-value)=0.000 < a =0.05, and with t-test obtained the t-count= 6.463 in experimental class and significant value (p-value) =0.000 < a = 0.05 Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. The result indicated that using Duolingo is effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery and had a moderate effect at the eighth grade of students SMPN 2 Banjarsari Lebak in the acaddemic year of 2021/2022.

Abstract

The purpose of this research to determine the effect of using Duolingo application towards students’ grammar mastery in simple present tense at the seventh grade students of MTS Miftahul Afkar in academic year 2021-2022. This research used a quantitative approach, especially a quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test for collecting the data. Duolingo application used as learning media to improve students’ grammar mastery especially in simple present tense. In this research, the researcher used two classes with total population of 58 students. The result of this research was calculated using the T-test. The result in the experimental class showed that the average post-test score (73,9) was bigger than the pre-test score (57,2) while the result in the control class showed that the average post-test score (67,1) was bigger than the pre-test score (57,2). By using the t-test, the result showed that the value of Ttable (1,673) was bigger than Tcount (-20,112) with a significant level of 0,05. This result indicated that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. This findings indicated that the Duolingo application has a significant effect towards students' grammar mastery at the seventh grade students of MTS Miftahul Afkar in academic year 2021-2022.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine, first whether or not there is a significant effect on the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade A students taught using cue card media at SMP IT Daarul Uzma, before and after treatment and second whether or not there is a significant difference in the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade B students taught using flashcard media. The population of this study was 42 students. The sample of this study was 42 eighth grade students of SMP IT Daarul Uzma Picung, which were divided into experimental and control groups, and each group consisted of 21 students. The sample selection technique was done by purposive sampling. To collect data, each group was given a pre-test and post-test. The data analysis technique used in this research is paired sample ttest which is calculated using SPSS 26. Based on the results of data analysis, the average results of the post-test of the experimental class and the control class are different, namely 77.43 and 69.52 and for the results of the t-test obtained a significance value of 0.000 ≤ α = 0.05. These results show that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Thus, there is a significant effect on vocabulary mastery by using cue card media.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the significant Effect of Anagram Game Towards Students Vocabulary Mastery at the Eighth Grade of SMPN 6 Malingping Lebak-Banten in the Academic Year 2023/2024. The researcher paper used quantitative approach and quasi-experimental design. This research was conducted six meetings and the researcher has chosen two classes are a experimental class and control class. The technique in choosing the sample is purposive sampling, the researcher used VIII-A (30 students) as experimental class and VIII-B (32 students) as control class. The experimental class was taught used Anagram Game, while the control class was taught used Pictionary Game. In the collecting the data technique, the researcher gives pre-test and post-test. The score pre-test of experimental class are 1965, the score pre-test of control class are 1730. Then, the score post-test of experimental class are 2340, the score post-test of control class are 2335. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 29 statistical computation and used the result of the post-test both class experimental and control to analyze the hypothesis test. The researcher has found the result of Significant two-tailed = <0.001. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the usage of Anagram Game has a significant effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery in SMPN 6 Malingping.
