Abstract

This article is written based on a research that has been conducted. This research aimed to analyze the character values ​​found in the textbook used in the 8th grade of the Junior high School "When English Rings a Bell". This research applied the content analysis method with a qualitative approach. Researcher used document, namely a textbook as research instrument. There were six steps in analyzing data: unitizing, sampling, recording / coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The results of the analysis showed that in general the eighteen character values ​​were used in the book. However, the character values were still not evenly distributed. Character value ​​that often appear was communicative value, while the character value ​​that appear the least was religious value.

Abstract

This research has been done because the researcher found some problems in speaking at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping. The first problem was the students nervous when they were asked to speak up. The second problem was the students had lack of confidence. The third problem was the students had a felt panic when their teacher gave test. The last problem was the students felt afraid the teacher inform the score of the meeting. This study aimed to find out the speaking anxiety level at tenth grade SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping.The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research.The population of this research were tenth grade students that consist of 134 students. The students were divided into four classes.The researcher took 25 % of the population by using random sampling technique to determine the sample because the population is more than one hundred students and there are 34 students of this research. To collect the data, researcher used questionnaire to find out speaking anxiety level of the students.The result researcher found the data there were 3 components of speaking anxiety. The consist of communication apprehension, test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation. It was found that 89 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in communication apprehension. Then 94 total score of the students had moderate anxiety level in test anxiety. The last result found that 88 total score of the students had moderately low anxiety level in fear of negative evaluation. In conclusion, the students speaking anxiety level at the tenth grade at SMAN 2 Lubuk Sikaping based on those three components above was 90 total score which mean the students anxiety level in speaking was in moderate level.

Abstract

Knowledge of pragmatic has been crucial element to the students English Department. The main focus of the research to find out the level of students pragmatic awareness by using percentage, the research was due to the problem found some students still used inappropriate respond to the pragmatic situation. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research in which the sample was taking by using random sampling technique with 25 samples at IAIN Bukittinggi of English Department. Additionally, the analyzing of the data was done by Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT) test which is consist of 17 situation, made the description about the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse, analyzing the data using percentage, describe the data, found the level and making conclusion. The result showed that students pragmatic awareness in comprehending term in deixis is 61% it means the level is good. In performing term of speech act is 79% it means the level is good. Moreover, in understanding maxim is 62% it means the level is good. All of the students pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse is 67% it means the pragmatic awareness in comprehending written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi is good. The implication of this study to know the level of pragmatic awareness in written discourse of English Department of IAIN Bukittinggi.

Abstract

This research was to find out the students' perception of the use of podcasts in teaching listening. The research was due to problems found in the field; some of the students were not interested in listening, students have difficulty catching the speakers' ideas, the perception of students toward podcast is different. The design of this research was descriptive research with a quantitative approach as the method of the research. The sample was collected from 26 students at SMK Pembangunan Bukittinggi which used total sampling as the sampling technique of the research. The result revealed the mean score of students' perception of the use of podcasts in teaching listening was 63.06%. It showed that the students had a positive perception regarding the use of podcasts in teaching listening.

Abstract

New vocabulary or unknown word becomes problem for students. When students read a text, they got difficult because the unknown word.  And students had difficulty in grammar mastery too. To get the meaning of the text, it needs grammar. In grammar has a adverbial of time which is it can use as clue when reading a text. Additionally, this research is aimed to know whether there is a significant correlation between the students’ grammar mastery and students’ reading comprehension at Ninthegrade of MTsS PP MIS Cubadak.The quantitative research method and the technique was correlation research. The population was 117 students and sample of this research was 39 students from 92 class which use purposive sampling technique. The data was collected by grammar mastery and reading comprehension test. For reading comprehension test which was adapted from national exam prediction for junior high school printed by graha pustaka.The finding of this research shows that there is significant correlation between theStudents’ grammar mastery and students’ reading comprehension. It is proved by the r-measured 0.856 which is higher than r-table 0.316 (0.856 0.316). There was positive correlation and has high correlation between 0.81 – 0.99 which mean it has very high correlation. This means that frequent grammar mastery can improve reading comprehension.Based on the finding above, the question of the researchs’ problem were answered. There was a significant correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ reading comprehension since r-measured bigger than r-table. There was positive correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ reading comprehension. It can be seen from the table 4.7 which there was no minus mark in the table. Correlation between students’ grammar mastery and students’ reading comprehension has very strong correlation. The more students learn about grammar, it can increase their knowledge about reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of employing visual media in teaching vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade at UPT SMPN 3 Lunang. Several issues with students' vocabularies were discovered in the field. They were students' lack of motivation in expanding their English vocabulary, restricted vocabulary, and losing previously taught vocabulary. During the learning process, the researcher used visual media such as photos and actual objects to help students with vocabulary mastering. This study used descriptive quantitative research.The participants in this study were all UPT SMPN 3 Lunang students in the seventh grade. To collect the data, researcher used a test vocabulary from students. Based on calculated the data, the result of mean score vocabulary mastery students was 75 included at level effective. Therefore, it can be concluded using visual media effective for students vocabulary at seventh grade of UPT SMPN 3 Lunang.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the kind of difficult aspect in reading comprehension of the descriptive text faced by the students at eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sintoga. The method applied was descriptive quantitative, where the test and questionnaire were used as the instrument of the data. The sample of this study was VIII 2  chosen by using a simple random sampling technique. The test consisted of 30 question items divided into five types of questions: topic, main idea, word reference, location information, reference. Index difficulty and percentage were used to analyze the data. The result of the test showed that the majority of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Sintoga found difficulties including answering topic 76%, main idea 72%, word reference 79%, location information 62%, and reference 80%. The kind of difficult aspect that encountered by the students of SMPN 1 Sintoga was finding main idea questions because the located main idea was difficult to find. As the result, kind of the difficult aspect faced by was in achieving the inference for reading comprehension test

Abstract

The research aimed at finding out students’ perception of using storytelling as one of the techniques used in English class in order to develop students’ sociocultural competence. The research was conducted under mixed-method research. The sample of the research was English students at IAIN Bukittinggi who had taken storytelling classes and English students at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang who had joined an English activity (storytelling) held by the English students association of English study program. Data collection was done by distributing questionnarires and conducting interview. The instruments of the research were a questionnaire and an interview guide. The data were analyzed using quantitative analysis for the data from the questionnaire and qualitative analysis for the data from the interview. The research finding shows that the students agree that they have improved their ability in sociocultural competence, at least in five aspects. They state that they are good in these five elements; (1) students’ attitude toward sociocultural competence, (2) students’ knowledge of sociocultural competence, (3) students’ ability to interpret and relate cultural issues, (4) students’ ability in discovery and interaction, and (5) students’ ability of critical cultural awareness. Thus, it can be stated that storytelling is a good technique that can be used to develop students’ sociocultural competence based on students’ perceptions.
