Abstract

This research aims to analyze selectivity to mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) encricling gill net in costal area of Ambon Island. Fish sample was taken by following the whole series of capture fisheries operation by fishermen at two units of the encircling gillnet using both 2.0 and 2.5 inch mesh size. Holt method was used to analyze and predict selectivity of the mesh size operated by fishermen towards total length of mackerel. Dominant composition of the capture fisheries was in mackerel at 69.29% of seven fish species. Distribution of total length at mesh size 2.0 inch at the middle size of 21.5 cm - 25.5 cm and 2.5 inch at the middle size of 22.5 cm - 31.5 cm. Mesh length tended to be normally distributed, while length proportion for large size was higher in mesh size at 2.5 inch. For capture possibility at proportion 50% and optimum (100%) at mesh size at 2.0 inch was 19.9 cm and 21.9 cm, while mesh size at 2.5 inch was 25.4 cm and 27.4 cm. It is recommended to use minimum mesh size at 2.5 inch towards the resource of mackerel in coastal area of Ambon Island.

Abstract

The natural dynamics of the distribution of fish resources in marine waters are not uniform. This will have implications for optimizing the utilization of fish resources using various fishing gear in a fishing area. Fishing using millennium gillnets is generally not done by many fishermen on Ambon Island. The research aimed to determine the composition and influence of differences in millennium gillnet depth on catch results. This research method is a fishing experiment using 3 units of 3.5-inch millennium gillnets of uniform size which are set on the bottom of the water at treatment depths, namely 0-20 meters, 21-40 meters and > 40 meters. Simultaneous capture operations in the afternoon for 8 capture attempts. During the research, the catch was 364 fish weighing 209 kg. 6 types of fish were identified, namely Kuwe (Caranx sexfasciatus), yellow-tailed Lalosi (Caesio cunning), sand porter (Naso thynnoides), Samandar (Siganus sp), and grouper (Epinephelus merra), and mackerel (Scomberomorus gullatus). This type of fish is usually found swimming in open water or near the sea surface. The highest number of catches was the Kuwe fish species, 135 fish (37.09%) weighing 56.4 kg (26.99%), the lowest was the Tenggiri fish species (Scomberomorus gullatus), 5 fish (1.37%) weighing 5.1 kg (2, 44%). The highest catch was in the 21-40 m depth range, namely 162 fish and 94.7 kg, followed by more than 41 m, namely 103 fish and 57 kg, and the lowest in the 0-20 m depth range, namely 99 fish and 57.3 kg. The chance of catching fish occurs at all net-setting depths, but the highest chance occurs at 21-40 m. The results of the analysis showed that neither the overall catch nor the dominant fish species showed significant differences based on differences in depth.

Abstract

Arumbai Market in Ambon City, Maluku Province, is a central hub for the trade of fishery products, particularly groupers. This study aims to describe the origin of grouper catches and to identify the species and sizes of groupers marketed at Arumbai Market. Groupers, which belong to the family Serranidae, are the primary predators in coral reef ecosystems. Fish identification was conducted based on Allen's guide and verified through FishBase. The study was conducted from December 2022 to February 2023 using a survey method through direct observation and interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in tables and graphs. The results showed that groupers at Arumbai Market come from four main locations: Manipa (34.47%), Liang (26.81%), Latuhalat (24.26%), and Pulau Tiga (14.47%). Eight dominant species of groupers in this market are Variola albimarginata (44.64%), Cephalopholis miniata (20.60%), Epinephelus fasciatus (12.45%), Epinephelus ongus (6.44%), Cephalopholis urodeta (6.44%), Cephalopholis sonnerati (5.58%), Epinephelus areolatus (3.00%), and Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (0.86%). Grouper sizes vary, with Cephalopholis miniata having a maximum size of 27.1 cm and a minimum size of 19.9 cm. This study provides essential information on the origin of catches, species dominance, and sizes of groupers marketed, which can serve as a basis for better fishery management. These findings indicate a significant potential for grouper trade in the region and highlight the importance of sustainable management to preserve the continuity of coral reef ecosystems and grouper populations.

Abstract

The northern coastal waters of Ambon Island, particularly the area of Negeri Larike, serve as an important habitat for various economically and ecologically valuable reef fish species. Fishing activities using traditional drum traps (bubu gendang) are still practiced by local fishers as part of a small-scale, sustainable fishery. This study aims to analyze the catch characteristics of the bubu gendang operated in the northern waters of Ambon Island, particularly in the coastal area of Negeri Larike. The observed parameters include species composition, total length distribution, and bycatch rate. Data were obtained through direct observation of the catches from two traditional bubu units operated for one day, from 06:00 WIT to 06:00 WIT the following day, followed by species identification and biometric measurements. The results showed a total of 144 individual fish caught, comprising 20 species dominated by the families Acanthuridae (27.8%) and Chaetodontidae (22.2%). In terms of biomass, Calotomus carolinus contributed the highest (15.0%). Most of the fish caught were within the small to medium size range, with the highest average total length recorded in the Caesionidae family (23.5 cm). The bycatch rate was recorded at 32.7% by number of individuals and 18.2% by biomass. These findings indicate that the bubu gendang demonstrates good selectivity toward target species, although there remains a potential for capturing non-target species. This study provides technical recommendations for improving trap selectivity through the development of more environmentally friendly designs. It contributes scientific insights for evaluating the effectiveness of traditional fishing gear and supports sustainable fisheries management strategies based on coral reef ecosystem approaches in coastal areas.

Abstract

Bycatch refers to the unintentional capture of non-target species, including fish with no commercial value or those that are protected. This issue has raised significant concern in the fisheries industry, as it contributes to overfishing and degradation of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LED lighting on fish pot catch performance. The experiment was conducted from August to September 2023 in the waters of Sole Village, West Seram Regency, Maluku, Indonesia. An experimental fishing method was applied, comparing three treatments: fish pots without light (control), with blue LED light, and with green LED light. Across nine fishing trials, a total of 193 fish were caught, consisting of 53 individuals (27.32%) from pots without light, 108 individuals (55.67%) from blue LED pots, and 33 individuals (17.01%) from green LED pots. The composition of catch indicated that blue LED pots captured 75.00% target species and only 25.00% bycatch, compared to green LED pots (48.48% target : 51.52% bycatch) and pots without light (15.09% target : 84.91% bycatch). Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in total catch among treatments (p>0.05), but the blue LED pots recorded the highest productivity at 19.889 grams/trip/pot. These findings demonstrate that blue LED lighting not only enhances the catch of target species but also effectively reduces bycatch, thereby improving gear selectivity and supporting sustainable fisheries management. Key words: blue led light, by-catch, green led light, pots

Abstract

The observed decline in fishery production within the Teluk Ambon and Teluk Ambon Baguala sub-districts of Ambon City from 2020 to 2021 has prompted concerns regarding the efficacy of the fishing gear employed, particularly gill nets, which are predominantly utilized by small-scale fishers in Teluk Ambon Dalam. This study sought to examine the impact of various production factors on the catch yields of fishermen using gill nets, specifically focusing on net length, net width, frequency of fishing trips, immersion duration, and the experience of the fishermen. A descriptive methodology was employed, utilizing a survey technique for primary data collection through structured interviews with 12 respondents, complemented by secondary data sourced from official records and scientific literature. The analysis revealed that, although not all variables demonstrated statistical significance, there existed a positive correlation between certain technical factors and the total catch, notably net width, frequency of fishing trips, and fishermen's experience. These findings underscore the necessity of optimizing production variables as a strategic approach to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of small-scale fisheries in coastal regions. Key words: fishing operations, passive fishing gear, productivity, small-scale fisheries, technical variable

Abstract

Selected as the National Fish Reserve (LIN), Maluku Province is known for its abundant marine resources and enormous fishery potential, supported by a capture fishery area of 658,294.69 km² which is the largest in Indonesia. Maluku has three Fishery Management Areas of the Republic of Indonesia (WPPNRI), namely WPPNRI-714, WPPNRI-715, and WPPNRI-718. However, based on production data for the capture fishery and aquaculture sectors in Maluku Province during the 2018-2022 period, these resource potentials have not been optimally utilized. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the ecological conditions and utilization of fishery resources in Maluku Province as a consideration for developing targeted policies and strategies for fishery resource utilization. This research uses a quantitative descriptive approach with data presented in narrative format, simple tables, graphs, and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis. Data collection was conducted from various sources over a 5-year period (2018-2022). Based on the analysis results, the status of ecological conditions and fishery resource utilization in Maluku Province is classified as less sustainable, indicated by Rapfish scores below 50. To improve the sustainability of fishery resource management in this region, strengthening of monitoring systems and community education about the importance of aquatic ecosystem conservation is needed.
