Abstract

Deixis is an essential component of communication that must be carefully considered to improve its efficiency and prevent misunderstandings. This study aimed to analyze Suho EXO’s speech at the Stanford Korea Program 20th Anniversary Conference focused on the discourse deixis and types of discourse deixis used and investigate their functions. The research employed a qualitative method. A theory used in this study was based on the Levinson’s deixis theory (1983). Discourse deixis refers to deictic references to segments of discourse relative to the speaker’s current position within the discourse. Discourse deixis, like anaphora and cataphora, can serve as a cohesive device within a text. The analysis found 53 deictic expressions in 38 utterances in the speech. The types of discourse deixis found in the speech were it (20 data), this (10 data), and (7 data), these (4 data), but (4 data), that (2 data), so (2 data), those (1 datum), there (1 datum), or (1 datum), and actually (1 datum). Moreover, 34 data contained anaphora functions, such as and, it, this. Meanwhile, 19 data contained cataphora functions, such as that, but, or, so, these, those, and actually. Therefore, paying attention to deixis leads to more distinctive, accurate, and compelling conversations.Keyword: discourse deixis, speech, suho EXO

Abstract

Five Feet Apart is a romance novel written by Rachel Lippincott, Tobias Iaconis, and Mikki Daughtry about the love of two teenagers who are unable to be close to each other due to illness. This study aims to describe and explain the various types of love language and figurative love language found in the novel Five Feet Apart. This research is based on library resources. This research takes a qualitative approach. The issue in this study is the novel Five Feet Apart's various types of love languages and figurative language of love language. This investigation is divided into three stages. The first step is to gather information. Reading notes is the technique employed. Data analysis is the stage that comes after data collection. The data is analyzed descriptively. The results of the data analysis are then presented in the form of a presentation that includes an explanation of the novel Five Feet Apart. The theoretical triangulation validation method was used, which included document reading, recording, and analysis stages. According to the findings of this study, the expressions in the novel Five Feet Apart use a variety of love languages, including words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, receiving gifts, and acts of service. Furthermore, in the novel Five Feet Apart, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification are examples of figurative language of love language.

Abstract

Slang is an informal type of language often used in everyday communication, especially on social media. Meanwhile, X, a popular social media platform, features many comments that frequently use slang words in its threads. Thus, this study aimed to classify the types of slang word formation and the functions of slang words found in comments on X. The theoretical framework for this study included Yule's (2010) theory on types of slang words and Zhou and Fan's (2013) theory on the functions of slang expressions. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from comments by users on Elon Musk's X account, uploaded by Elon Musk from July to August 2023. The findings identified several types of word formation: 1) clipping (7 data), 2) derivation (6 data), 3) acronyms (4 data), 4) borrowing (4 data), 5) coinage (2 data), 6) compounding (1 data), and 7) multiple processes (1 data). Among the types of word formation analyzed, clipping was the most common type of slang word formation found, with 7 examples identified. The main function of slang words in these comments was to express user’s feelings, especially their disappointment with the rebranding of Twitter to X. This suggests that users use slang and word creation techniques in a variety of ways, demonstrating linguistic innovation and originality in online communication. Abstract

Mythology or myth is an important part of the study of literature. A comparative study of two literary works written in the same language and originating from the same cultural context is not a valid application of this field. This study employs a comparative literature methodology to examine the similarities, differences, and classifications of myths associated with the Legend of Lake Toba and the Creator of Lake Chala. This research utilized a comparative literature framework to analyse the myths associated with the research subjects. This study employed a qualitative research design utilizing descriptive analysis and library research.  Both narratives employed the established plot structure identified as Freytag’s pyramid.  Despite the narrative differences, the plots of the two stories are theoretically analogous.  The Legends of Lake Toba and Lake Chala exhibit significant similarities, particularly in their narrative structures, cautionary motifs, and consequences of unmet obligations.  Based on the noted similarities and differences, particularly in the plot, the authors concluded that both The Legend of Lake Toba and The Creator of Lake Chala fit within the speculative and explanatory (etiological) category of myths.

Abstract

Turn-taking manages mechanical speaking turns and creates a cooperative, dynamic, and entertaining conversation. Therefore, creating pleasant and engaging experiences allows participants to express their ideas confidently. Thus, this study investigates how such an experience is facilitated by the turn-taking mechanism in Happy Sad Confused and identifies how markers are used as strategies in conversational dynamics. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and Stenström's (1994) theory related to turn-taking strategies. The data were collected using Jefferson's (2009) transcription approach. The results of this study showed that the interaction between Josh Horowitz and Henry Cavill demonstrated a successful turn-taking mechanism to promote compelling discussion, allowing Henry Cavill to disclose emotive and in-depth work experiences. So, turn-taking also enriched conversational dynamics in a talk show scenario. Markers significantly contributed to maintaining the natural flow of communication and smooth transitions to keep the conversation rhythm. The most dominant marker by filled pauses (e.g., “ǝ:m”, “uh”) was 47 times. Overall, turn-taking maintained interesting communication. Speakers could use suitable tactics and markers to enable meaningful interactions, making talks more dynamic and entertaining for participants and viewers.

Abstract

Syntax is crucial for understanding the structure of language, including verb phrases. While research into syntactic structures has been done in several texts, there is limited focus on modern song lyrics, particularly in the context of syntactic tree representation. This research looked into the syntactic patterns of verb phrases found in Olivia Rodrigo's song Traitor using the Chomsky Tree Diagram method. A qualitative descriptive approach classifies the verb phrase into intransitive, mono transitive, ditransitive, complex transitive, and intensive types. This research applies TGG to the data, comprising of the verb phrases extracted from the lyrics, which are illustrated as tree diagrams. The findings of this study have shown different forms of the structure of verb phrases and their hierarchical relationship existing within the lyrics. The given study contributes to the syntactic research by pointing out the importance of verb phrase analysis in modern textual forms.

Abstract

Derivational affixation is a linguistic process that involves the creation of new words by adding prefixes, suffixes, or infixes to existing words. These affixes can modify the word's part of speech, alter its meaning, or both. The present study had the objective of identifying various types of derivational affixes and examining the morphological transformations they bring about in health-related terms within CNN's online news platform. Employing qualitative research methods informed by Katamba's theoretical framework (2005), the investigation utilized a dataset sourced from the news website https://edition.cnn.com/. The dataset encompassed 30 health-related news articles spanning topics such as COVID-19, mental health, food, beauty, sleep, and pregnancy. Based on data analysis from 30 health news, there were 13 words containing derivational prefixes and 64 words containing derivational suffixes. The words in derivational prefix did not change the part of speech but changed the meaning. In derivational suffixes, there are 7 types of changes that change word from verb to noun (23 words), adjective to noun (14 words), noun to noun (10 words), noun to adjective (7 words), adjective to adverb (5 words), verb to adjective (4 words), and the last noun to verb (1 word). From the findings, it can be concluded that the addition of affixes to words explains the function of sentence structure. Derivational suffixes are found the most because they have many interactions of forms, meanings, and functions. Keywords: derivational affix, health, prefix, suffix, news
