Abstract

Studies on politeness strategies have been carried out in various fields. However, the study in the context of oral and written interactions is still limited. The purpose of this study is to present the use of students' language politeness strategies in oral and written interactions and to reveal the causes of differences in their choice of use. The primary data in this study were 50 instant message texts between students and lecturers. Data were analyzed using the categorization of politeness strategies from Brown & Levinson (1987), which was supported by data from interviews with 7 participants. This study found that 4 out of 5 categories of politeness strategies were used by students, which were dominated by negative politeness strategies. It indicates an awareness of the asymmetric power relationship between the two, which makes them feel the need to be careful so that what is conveyed does not threaten their faces. In addition, it was found that the reasons behind the variation in the use of politeness strategies were related to educational ritualism, looseness of domination of power, the intensity of interaction, and the purpose of sending messages.

Abstract

This research investigates how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students cope with ill-formed source-language sentences in English-to-Indonesian sight interpreting. In line with the objective, students’ interpretations of sentences with linguistic errors were collected as the data via video-based observation and qualitatively analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that most students were aware of the occurrence of typographical errors in the assigned source documents and able to sight interpret those parts as targeted, especially when dealing with mix-up letters and middle-letter omission. However, many of them seemed to have difficulties in identifying the occurrence of grammatical errors, such as subject-verb disagreement and improper use of a certain part of speech and punctuation errors, such as the presence of unnecessary punctuations, which then leading to inaccurate interpretations. It is assumed that the primary cause of these interpretation problems is attributed to students’ limited understanding of the source texts, highlighting the critical need for enhanced fast-reading comprehension skills among students.

Abstract

The present study examined the use of hyperbolic expressions in a text-based virtual communication context, specifically in an Indonesian newly mothers’ online chat room. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method to analyze 60 utterances containing hyperbolic expressions taken from the Mom Sharing WhatsApp group. Simak and catat methods were implemented to observe and take notes on the hyperbolic expressions used by the mothers identified based on McCarthy & Carter’s (2004) characterization. The collected data were then categorized into 7 forms of hyperbole proposed by Claridge (2010), and the possible functions behind the use of this figurative language were analyzed qualitatively based on the overall contexts. Results reveal that 6 forms of hyperbole were used in the chat room, namely single-word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, the role of superlative, and comparison. Furthermore, the expressions were found to serve various functions, namely to express emotions, to concretize the message and evoke imagination, to create humour, and to establish group identity. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on the use of hyperbole in everyday communication.

Abstract

Deixis is an essential component of communication that must be carefully considered to improve its efficiency and prevent misunderstandings. This study aimed to analyze Suho EXO’s speech at the Stanford Korea Program 20th Anniversary Conference focused on the discourse deixis and types of discourse deixis used and investigate their functions. The research employed a qualitative method. A theory used in this study was based on the Levinson’s deixis theory (1983). Discourse deixis refers to deictic references to segments of discourse relative to the speaker’s current position within the discourse. Discourse deixis, like anaphora and cataphora, can serve as a cohesive device within a text. The analysis found 53 deictic expressions in 38 utterances in the speech. The types of discourse deixis found in the speech were it (20 data), this (10 data), and (7 data), these (4 data), but (4 data), that (2 data), so (2 data), those (1 datum), there (1 datum), or (1 datum), and actually (1 datum). Moreover, 34 data contained anaphora functions, such as and, it, this. Meanwhile, 19 data contained cataphora functions, such as that, but, or, so, these, those, and actually. Therefore, paying attention to deixis leads to more distinctive, accurate, and compelling conversations.Keyword: discourse deixis, speech, suho EXO

Abstract

Corrective feedback needs to be used carefully to treat young learners’ oral errors as it should not inhibit learners from communicating. This study aims to investigate the use of corrective feedback strategies by informal English training center teachers in Bandung. Classroom observation and coding were used to collect and categorize data regarding errors committed by students and teachers’ use of corrective strategies.  The study found that pronunciation errors (49%) were most frequently committed, followed by grammar (27%), vocabulary (20%), and the use of L1 (4%) errors. To treat those errors, the teachers apply corrective feedback strategies, which mostly were in the form of recast (46%) and elicitation (35%). Other corrective feedback strategies such as explicit correction (11%), metalinguistic feedback (6%), repetition (1%), and paralinguistic signal (1%) were found less frequently. This study suggests teachers consider several factors such as types of errors, learning factors, and learners’ factors when deciding the corrective feedback strategies.

Abstract

Code mixing has been widely studied, but the study of it focusing on Indonesian affixation to English words is still scant. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the types of affixes, the change in English word classes, and the morphophonemic processes that occurred on social media, specifically on Instagram. Simak method was employed to collect 90 Indonesian affixed-English words from 3 Instagram users’ photo captions as the data. Furthermore, Kridalaksana (2007) and Ramlan’s (2001) theories of affixation were employed to analyze the data. The findings demonstrate that the most frequently used affix is a prefix, with di- recorded as the highest number. As for the lexical function formed after the process of affixation, this study reveals three forms, namely (a) verb-forming, (b) adjectival-forming, and (c) noun-forming with verb-forming is the most frequently used. Finally, in terms of its morphophonemic processes, it is more common that the base form of the English words is maintained rather than considering the phonological rules as regulated in the Indonesian language. These preliminary findings suggest that such affixation does not consider EYD V due to the informal setting the social media mostly constructs.

Abstract

Communicating is a way for humans to convey information or messages that they want to share with others. Illocutionary acts often occur in everyday life related to speech acts between people. This research analyzes the illocutionary acts and how illocutionary acts are conveyed in the comments of Gordon Ramsay, who is a judge and head chef in the reality show Hell’s Kitchen Season 21 Episodes 1-2. The qualitative method with content analysis is used in this research. Data is taken from the available subtitle transcripts on each episode of this reality show. Searle’s theory is used to classify the types of illocutionary acts and then to identify the way of conveying illocutionary acts. This study found 94 data on the type of illocutionary act by direct and indirect speech acts. The findings showed the types of illocutionary acts were representative (36 data), expressive (29 data), directive (20 data), declarative (5 data), and commissive (4 data). Representative became the type of illocutionary act most used in this research. In addition, this illocutionary act is most often conveyed by direct speech acts, as much 73 data while indirect speech acts are 21 data. This type and method of conveying were most dominant because Gordon Ramsay’s comments contained statements and judgments about the participant’s dished and cooking skills based on his beliefs. Therefore, his comments directly state the meaning he wants to convey without hidden meanings.

Abstract

Playing an important role to carry out one of emotive functions in verbal communication, studies on swear words in various languages have been conducted. However, the study based on an anthropolinguistic approach, especially in the context of Sundanese Language (BS), is still scant. This paper aims to present the results of the analysis of Sundanese swearing lexicons categorized as animal in terms of their lingual form and usage, as well as the manifestation of Sundanese cultural values reflected behind their meanings based on the procedures of literature review, observation, survey, and interviews. In general, the results of this study demonstrate that BS has at least 15 lexicons of swearing in the animal category. Based on their lingual form, the lexicon consists of a class of nouns which can be used in the form of words, phrases, and clauses. The meanings of these lexicons tend to be metaphorical, whose conceptions specifically reflect the Sundanese people's own perspective or thinking towards the related animals. Finally, the presence of various animal category of Sundanese swearing lexicons seems to describe its culture which is geographical in nature or influenced by the closeness of the people to the nature that spreads around them.
