Abstract

This research deals with the interpersonal meaning of Soekarno’s speech in the first 1955 Asian-African Conference. The study focuses on analysing mood types and choice of modality in that speech. As the speech brought the theme of spirit of solidarity and brotherhood, then this study aims at examining how the choice of mood types and modality represent this theme. To realize this, the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL), particularly on mood and modality system by Halliday and Mathiessen (2004), is employed. From the discussion, it is found that clauses are mostly categorized as declarative clauses. It proves that the Asian-African Conference was held by the realization of solidarity and brotherhood. The use of declarative clauses indicates the speaker’s competences in delivering persuasive speeches by conveying factual information. In addition, it is found that the speaker is neutral and seems to have close relation with the audience. Meanwhile, the use of low degree of modality is helpful to encourage the audience’s confidence to act together.

Abstract

This paper employs one strand of Critical Discourse Analysis as a framework to discuss a discourse of political figures. It is a speech delivered by Barack Obama with regard to the issue of 46th president election in 2020 between Trump and Biden. That approach is van Dijk’s (1993) social cognition theory that is focused on the elements of social cognition contained in the speech. In line with Memon, et al. (2014) findings on analyzing Benazir Bhutto’s last speech, there are nine elements of social cognition. Meanwhile, the findings of current study show that there are three social cognition elements in the speech. They are social attachment, mind control, and glorification. In conclusion, social cognition can explore mental awareness of the scenario writer which then forms the text. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, social cognition, speech

Descriptive qualitative data analysis was employed in this study. Data collecting methods based on a review of the literature because the medium utilized to create novels and films are different, the results of this study show that the ecranisation process happens in the plot. The reduction of plot from components that aren't as crucial for display causes a general reduction.
