Abstract

The Indian Ocean is influenced by monsoon systems which alter the ocean’s physical and chemical properties. Specifically, the southwestern Sumatran waters in the eastern Indian Ocean are considered a dual current regulated zone i.e. affected by South Equatorial Counter Current (SECC) and South Java Current (SJC). This area is considered as having an important role in the transfer of organic matter or the biological pump. However, the information about this area is minimal, especially in terms of organic matter and nutrient profile. This study will update the recent information about the area, including the profile of particulate organic matter (POM), macro-nutrients, total suspended solids (TSS), macromolecule-degradingbacteria, and soft bottom macrobenthic organisms sampled from 26 stations in both the SECC-regulated zone and the SJC-regulated zone. The physical profile is typical of tropical watersand both zones have a distinct profile of organic matter and nutrients. The particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), and TSS of the SECC-regulated zone can be considered higher than those of the SJC-regulated zone. This region is categorized as mesotrophic waters, especially from the surface up to 100 m. The production of nutrients and organic matter in the water column in this area contribute significantly to the abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and benthic organisms.

Abstract

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause various problems, such as water quality degradation, fauna mass mortality and impairment of human health. Water quality monitoring in Lampung Bay has been conducted by Lampung Marine Aquaculture Office (BBL) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries since 1994. Occurrence of Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum (Pbc), a causative organism of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), has been recorded but threats caused by HABs have never been reported. A study aimed to know the level of public knowledge and awareness about HABs in Lampung Bay has been conducted. The components of group respondents consisted oflocal governments, academics and coastal communities. Awareness from each component was examined includinggeneral HAB knowledge, HAB impact to the community, HAB occurence and local knowledge of HAB. Data of HAB knowledge were collected through questionnaire and focus group  discussion. The result showed that 40.5% of respondents had knowledge of HABs phenomena and 51.3% respondents only know signs or indicators of HAB occurrence, while only 1.4% respondents had knowledge of local HAB occurences. The direct impact of HABs to the community was not commonly known by the respondents. Only a few cases of poisoning after eating seafood were reported. It can be concluded that there was lack of public knowledge and awareness on HABs in LampungBay. Intensive public awareness programs about HABs should be conducted in order to reduce risk towards HABs in Lampung Bay.

Abstract

Pulau Kelapa Dua, bagian dari Kepulauan Seribu, kaya akan keanekaragaman hayati dalam ekosistem mangrove dan lamun. Bivalvia berfungsi sebagai bioindikator yang penting untuk menilai kesehatan ekosistem ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis perbedaan keanekaragaman bivalvia antara lingkungan mangrove dan lamun dan mempelajari hubungan bivalvia pada kedua habitat ini. Data dikumpulkan melalui survei kepadatan mangrove dan lamun, pengukuran kualitas air, dan analisis sedimen. Metode transek garis dan plot digunakan untuk pengamatan mangrove, sedangkan metode Seagrass Watch diterapkan untuk pengamatan lamun. Sampel bivalvia dikumpulkan menggunakan pipa PVC (hingga kedalaman 10 cm) untuk individu di bawah permukaan dan survei visual untuk spesies yang terlihat di permukaan. Substrat berpasir di pulau ini mendukung berbagai spesies bivalvia. Sebanyak lima belas spesies bivalvia dari enam famili teridentifikasi: Tellinidae, Cardiidae, Veneridae, Lucinidae, Donacidae, dan Pinnidae. Kepadatan bivalvia secara signifikan lebih tinggi di ekosistem lamun (1.029 ind./100 m²) dibandingkan dengan ekosistem mangrove (366 ind./100 m²), dengan famili Tellinidae menunjukkan kepadatan tertinggi (664 ind./100 m²). Indeks ekologi menunjukkan kondisi yang stabil, dengan komunitas bivalvia yang beragam dan tersebar merata, mencerminkan lingkungan yang sehat. Analisis korespondensi mengungkapkan bahwa spesies bivalvia lebih terkonsentrasi di stasiun yang merepresentasikan ekosistem lamun, menegaskan hubungan yang lebih erat dengan habitat lamun.
