Abstract

This paper discusses what are the benefits of Marine Protected Area (MPA) in relation to SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) number 14 on marine ecosystems. Furthermore, it is discussed how the prospect of the Benoa Bay coast as an MPA. Sustainable development requires a balance between social inclusion, ecological conservation and economic benefits; but in practice MPA among stakeholders places more importance on one pillar than the other. Then it is reviewed how about the status of Benoa Bay as MPA based on the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries decree number 46/KEPMEN-KP/2019 which has divided into core zones and limited use zones. In this case, the core zone is used for Hinduism ritual activities of local communities, while the one is used for small-scale fisheries and marine tourism activities. Thus, Benoa Bay serves to preserve local wisdom and customs, as well as the locus for religious activities of the Balinese people. Finally,  Benoa Bay as an MPA is part of the success of the indigenous peoples' movement and academic studies to encourage the state's commitment to achieve national and global targets to seek 10 percent of Indonesia's territorial waters as MPA. The prospect of Benoa Bay as an MPA in the future is expected to be in line with the goals of sustainable development with the impact of creating social inclusion, improving the welfare of local communities and ensuring the sustainability of marine ecosystems in the coastal areas of Bali.

Abstract

This article focuses on the dynamics of North Beach reclamation in Penjaringan sub-district. Reclamation is an activity that is considered beneficial for improving the use of land resources. This study uses the historical method to explain the policy underpinning the implementation of reclamation and the impact of reclamation on social life in Penjaringan Sub-district. Reclamation development has been planned since Presidential Decree (Keppres) No. 52/1995 on Reclamation of the North Coast of Jakarta was issued by the New Order government. In its implementation, the policy that led to the implementation of reclamation had adverse impacts in both environmental and social aspects. This was caused by overlapping policies that only benefited the developers. In addition, the implementation of reclamation as an implementation of government policy did not pay attention to the social and environmental impacts for the surrounding community.

Abstract

This article examines the role of Ragunan Zoo as a medium for wildlife conservation from 1966 to 1993, focusing on its development amidst criticism for prioritizing tourism over conservation. Using historical methodology, the study traces the evolution of Ragunan Zoo from its origins as Planten en Dierentuin during the Dutch colonial era to its transformation into a modern conservation institution. The research highlights key efforts by Ragunan Zoo to address criticism, including the development of animal collections, breeding programs, partnerships with international zoos, and educational initiatives. The research also explores the tangible outcomes of these efforts, such as animal releases, successful breeding programs, and international recognition, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award awarded to Benjamin Galstaun, the zoo's first director. Despite challenges like limited funding and outdated infrastructure, Ragunan Zoo has made significant strides in balancing its roles as a conservation, educational, and recreational institution. The article concludes that Ragunan Zoo's conservation efforts have yielded positive results, contributing to preserving Indonesia's biodiversity while navigating the complexities of its dual role as a tourist attraction and conservation center.

Abstract

The digital revolution presents a dual impact on Indonesia's public sphere: unlocking democratic potential while simultaneously giving rise to complex pathologies such as hoaxes, polarization, and hate speech. This article argues that a partial ethical approach is inadequate to address these dynamics. Utilizing theoretical triangulation, this analysis integrates the perspectives of Jürgen Habermas, Michel Foucault, and Max Scheler to offer a holistic framework. Habermas provides the normative-procedural foundation concerning the ideal public sphere and communicative distortions. Foucault deconstructs power/knowledge relations and disciplinary mechanisms within the digital architecture. Meanwhile, Scheler complements this with an axiological foundation through material ethics of value and a critique of ressentiment. Contextual Indonesian case studies demonstrate that these three perspectives complement each other dialectically. It is concluded that an effective digital communication ethics requires a three-layered integration: (1) strengthening deliberative-rational procedures (Habermas); (2) maintaining critical vigilance towards power (Foucault); and (3) building character based on values and the education of feeling (Scheler). This synthesis is expected to guide Indonesia's digital ecosystem towards becoming a space that is not only intelligent but also just and humane.
