Abstract

Background: Excessive use of computers and smartphones can cause complaints of dizziness and watery eyes. if it happens continuously, it will be harmful to eye health. Objectives: The study aimed to examine the relationship between the use of computers and smartphones with a decrease in visual acuity. Methods: The study was correlational with a cross-sectional design involving 65 students and selected by total sampling. Data collection about using computers and smartphones used observation sheets and measuring visual acuity by Snellen charts. The Spearman rank test was employed to examine the relationship between variables. Results: The use of computers and smartphones shows that in the high category as many as 10 (15%) respondents, 24 (37%) respondents in the medium category, and 31 (48%) in the low category. The results of the examination of visual acuity in the normal category were 4 respondents (6%), the nearly normal category were 30 (46%) respondents, and the less moderate category were 31 (48%) respondents. The P value (Sig. 2-tailed) is 0.000 with α 0.05, so 0.000 <0.05, meaning that there was a significant relationship between computer and smartphone use with a decrease in visual acuity. Conclusion: The study shows that there was a relationship between the use of computers and smartphones with a decrease in visual acuity

Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis is a prevalent condition among the elderly, leading to joint pain. Treatment options for osteoarthritis can include both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. One promising non-pharmacological approach is dry cupping therapy. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effect of dry cupping therapy in reducing pain levels among the elderly in nursing homes. Methods: The research employed a pre-experimental design utilising a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of all 26 elderly residents diagnosed with osteoarthritis at the nursing home. The intervention involved administering cupping therapy to the knee for 40 minutes. Pain levels were assessed using the Bourbanis scale before and after the intervention, and data were analysed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The findings revealed a significant reduction in pain levels following the cupping therapy, with a p-value of 0.000, below the significance threshold of 0.05. This indicates that dry cupping therapy may be an effective complementary treatment for alleviating pain in elderly individuals suffering from osteoarthritis in the nursing home. Conclusion and recommendation: This study concludes that dry cupping therapy effectively reduces pain in elderly patients with osteoarthritis. Therefore, this therapy can be considered a safe and practical non-pharmacological method for managing joint pain related to osteoarthritis.

Abstract

Background: Caregiving for individuals with schizophrenia, particularly those at an elevated risk of exhibiting violent behavior, presents significant challenges for family members, especially in regions with limited resources. It is essential to understand the factors that influence caregivers' competence to ensure effective home management and mitigate the risk of violent incidents. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between socio-demographic factors such as age, occupation, and education, and the knowledge and capabilities of family caregivers in managing schizophrenia patients at risk for violence. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted at Mutiara Sukma Mental Hospital in West Nusa Tenggara, involving eighty-nine family caregivers recruited through accidental sampling. Data were gathered using validated questionnaires designed to assess demographic information, knowledge regarding schizophrenia, and caregiving efficacy. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test, with a significance threshold set at p < 0.01. Results: The majority of participants were in early adulthood (50.6%) and were employed (57.3%). The statistical analysis uncovered significant correlations between age, occupation, education, knowledge, and the caregivers' competencies in providing care (p < 0.01). Caregivers with higher educational attainment and substantial knowledge demonstrated enhanced abilities in managing medication and addressing violent behaviors compared to those with lower educational levels or insufficient understanding of the condition. Conclusion: Socio-demographic factors and health literacy play crucial roles in determining caregiving abilities. It is recommended that nursing interventions prioritize targeted psychoeducation and social support tailored for families encountering educational and socioeconomic challenges, thereby enhancing patient safety and the overall quality of care in home settings.
