Abstract

Most Indonesian learners are bilingual or even polyglot. Not only speaking their mother tongue (which is mostly regional language like Javanese or Sundanese), they are also exposed to foreign languages like Arabic, English and French. However, it does not necessarily means that learning foreign languages is easy for them. According to Chomsky, human beings are equipped with Language Acquisition Device which enables them to acquire any language they are exposed to. It is assumed that the more we are exposed to other languages, the easier it is for us to learn foreign languages. Communicative Approach is used in the learning process at Program Studi Sastra Perancis Universitas Negeri Semarang. This approach focuses on 4 competencies namely: Speaking (La production orale), Writing (La production ecrite), Listening Comprehension (La compréhension orale) and Reading Comprehension (La comprehension écrite). Since Grammar Course has been abolished from the curriculum for a couple of years, it is in these 4 courses of competence that its teaching is integrated into. Unfortunately, most students are not quite competent in these four courses and also weak in Grammar. It is expected that Language Awareness concept help solve this problem.

Abstract

Abstract

This study sought to explore the complex interactions between learner autonomy, digital proficiency, and writing skill achievement. It involved a cohort of 33 students from an intermediate French writing class (Production Écrite) enrolled in an intensive program at Universitas Negeri Semarang in Indonesia. Methodologically, data acquisition encompassed the evaluation of learner’s autonomy and digital competence via structured questionnaires, complemented by the submission of writing scores from the program coordinator. Using a quantitative approach, the study applied the Pearson correlation coefficient to examine the relationships between digital literacy and learner autonomy, digital literacy and writing proficiency, and between autonomous learning and writing proficiency. The findings highlighted a strong positive correlation between digital literacy and learner autonomy (r = 0.606, p = 0.05), a moderate positive correlation between digital literacy and writing proficiency (r = 0.363, p = 0.05), and a small positive correlation between autonomous learning and writing proficiency (r = 0.289, p = 0.05). These findings highlight the importance of encouraging self-directed learning in French writing education while leveraging technological tools to enhance students' writing skills. Consequently, educators are encouraged to integrate digital literacy initiatives into their teaching practices to support the development of autonomous learners and improve overall writing competency among students.

Abstract

Abstract. Travel writing, a subgenre of literature, depicts a writer's journey in visiting unfamiliar places. The author experienced negotiation between himself and the others about similarities or differences. In the travel writing, a reality is a reference emphasized the most, rather than mere imagination or fiction. This study aims to examine the representation of travel writing in Un Métier de Rêve by Gabriel García Márquez and to uncover the influence of the narrator's personal perspective (the self) on his view of Europeans (the others). The story in short story Un Métier de Rêve is one of Gabriel García Márquez's travel stories included in Douze Contes Vagabonds. This type of research is descriptive-analytic research using literature studies. The data collection technique involves reading, noting, and sorting. In analyzing the data, which includes words, phrases, dialogues, monologues, feelings, and behavior of the characters, the researcher conducted data interpretation by proving or debating a matter through valid evidence using Carl Thompson's travel writing theory, which consists of three concepts, namely: Reporting the World, Revealing the Self, and Representing the Other. The results of the study on Gabriel García Márquez's Un Métier de Rêve show that Márquez seeks to portray the world he encountered rationally and objectively, even the subjective element found in the short story still appears to be objective. As a result, there is an ambiguity found that is uncovered due to the contestation between fact and fiction in travel writing. In addition, the influence of the ideology of the former colonial state apparently provides a particular emphasis on Márquez's strategy in writing his travel stories.  Keywords: Gabriel García Márquez, Travel Writing, Literatur

Abstract

Literary works serve not only as a means of aesthetic expression, but also represent the dynamics of social life. Émile Zola’s novel La Bête Humaine represents the dynamics of 19th-century French society, characterized by industrialization, moral crisis, social inequality, and complex power relations. In this context, Georg Simmel’s theory of social interaction is relevant for understanding how relationships between characters shape behavior within social structures, and enables an analysis of the interrelationship between patterns of interaction, social structure, and power dynamics in society. The aim of this study is to analyze various forms of social interaction in Émile Zola’s novel La Bête Humaine and reveal how these interactions reflect the social conditions of 19th-century French society. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a sociological approach to literature based on Georg Simmel’s theory of social interaction. The material object is the novel La Bête Humaine, while the formal objects include concepts of social interaction such as dyads, triads, strangers, conflict, and secrets. Data in the form of narrative quotations and dialogue were collected through literature studies and close reading techniques, then analyzed using manifest and latent content analysis techniques to interpret the social meanings contained. The findings indicate that social interaction within the novel not only shapes relationships between characters but also reflects the social structures that influence behavior and character. Dyads, triads, and the stranger reveal relationships between characters that develop into mechanisms trigger destructive actions, whilst conflict and secrets expose tensions within power relations, social inequality, and moral crises in 19th-century French society. This study contributes to the field of literary sociology by emphasizing that social interaction within a text is not merely interpersonal, but is linked to broader social structures.
