Abstract

It needs appropriate and effective media to help the students learn vocabulary. This research used a descriptive method to explore students' perception thoughts toward using song lyrics as a learning media. The population of this research was tenth-grade students of SMAN 9 Padang at the academic year of 2024/2025 The research process used a cluster random sampling technique to decide the subject. The researcher got class X E2 as the sample which consists of 36 students. The researcher used questionnaire to collect the data. There are 20 statements in the questionnaire. The researcher gave the questionnaire to the students by using paper, and the duration for them to fill it was 30 minutes. The researcher used the Likert scale procedure to analyze the data. Based on the finding of the research, the researcher found that about 66.1% participants have positive perception of the use of song lyric for learning English, especially in vocabulary learning. As a result, 77% of students agreed that song lyric is effective media for vocabulary learning, 76% of students have positive perceptions about the learning outcomes, and 64% students also had positive perceptions about the experience while using song lyric as a media for vocabulary learning.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kemampuan berbicara siswa dan mengidentifikasi kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa dalam bertanya dan memberikan pendapat di kelas 10 SMKN 5 Padang tahun ajaran 2025 pada semester ganjil. Masalah yang dihadapi siswa adalah keterbatasan kosakata, salah pengucapan, dan kesulitan dalam membedakan ungkapan yang digunakan untuk bertanya dan memberikan pendapat. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Peneliti menggunakan teknik pengambilan sampel acak berkelompok pada dua kelas, yaitu X TKRO 1 dan X TKRO 2 di SMKN 5 Padang. Kelas yang dipilih adalah X TKRO 1, yang terdiri dari 30 siswa. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes berbicara di mana siswa melakukan dialog dalam bertanya dan memberikan pendapat di depan kelas. Data dianalisis berdasarkan kriteria komponen kemampuan berbicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas X TKRO 1 dalam bertanya dan memberikan pendapat berada pada tingkat sedang, dengan nilai rata-rata 69,3. Hal ini mencerminkan kinerja mereka dalam aspek-aspek yang dianalisis seperti kelancaran, ketepatan, pengucapan, tata bahasa, dan kosakata. Kesulitan yang paling umum dihadapi siswa adalah pengucapan, dengan 80% dari 30 siswa mendapat nilai di bawah rata-rata, dan kelancaran, dengan 66,6% dari mereka juga berkinerja di bawah rata-rata.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe students’ writing skills in recount texts before and after the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and to examine whether PjBL had a significant effect on their writing achievement. Only 5 of 16 students (31%) in Class XI TAB at SMK N 1 Sungai Limau achieved the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) of 78 in writing recount text, mostly due to teacher-centered instruction and difficulty organizing ideas and applying correct grammar. A pre-experimental method with a One-Group Pre-Test Post-Test design was employed, involving all 16 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected through a writing test on personal experience, independently scored by two raters using an adapted analytic rubric, and analyzed manually. The results showed that students’ writing skill improved from the "Fair" category (pre-test mean = 69.75) to the "Very Good" category (post-test mean = 86.25), a gain of 16.50 points, with Mechanics recording the highest improvement (+1.44). Inter-rater reliability was high (r = 0.918 and r = 0.909). The manually calculated t-test produced t-count = 8.559, exceeding t-table = 2.131 (df = 15, α = 0.05), so H0 was rejected. It is concluded that PjBL had a significant, positive effect on students’ writing skills and is recommended as an effective strategy for teaching recount text writing.
