Abstract

Most of lowland rice farms in East Java are small scales and managed individually. It leads to diverseproductivity, economically inefficient, and less competitive. An assessment was conducted in wet season2000/2001 with its objective of finding farmers empowerment model through the “Corporate Farming” model in aspecific location in accordance with the agreement of farmers’ groups. The study involved two farmers’ groups ofSido Mukti and Sido Makmur in Bintoyo village, Padas sub district, Ngawi district, in an irrigated land area of 100hectares. The control was Marsudi Tani farmers’ group in the same district. Results showed the farmers could notaccept “Corporate Farming” model, especially in centralized land management and land consolidation. Around 60percent of the farmers rejected the centralized land management even though they were the share holders.Appropriate farmers empowerment was the “Cooperative Farming” model in which farm inputs management andproduct marketing were handled through corporation pattern. The “Cooperative Farming” was able to lessen inputprice, decrease minimal productivity to reach break even point between 5 to 15 percent. Rice competitivenessimproved due to productivity increase by 5 to 37 percent, net profit rise by 14 to 64 percent, and highercompetitive advantage of 7 to 22 percent.Key words: farmers empowerment, cooperative farming, lowland rice farmingKegiatan pertanian lahan sawah di Jawa Timur didominasi oleh usaha skala sempit dan dikelola secaraperorangan.

Abstract

Sopialena, Akhsan N, Suryadi A, Nurdiana J. 2018. The identification of soil fungi isolated from Rhizosphere in different varieties of jali plants (Coix lacryma-jobi) in Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 2: 44-47. The rhizosphere effect indicated the development of active microbial population around the roots driving from the loss of organic materials. This research was intended to identify rhizosphere microbes by identifying the potential microbes four different varieties of jali (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) in Loh Sumber, Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia, i.e., jelai beras, jelai ketan, ketan lekat, and jelai kaltara. The soil samples were collected and isolated in the area of jali plantation in Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara at 45 days after planting. As many as 16 isolated samples were used, collected from four different variety of jali and 4 times of replication. The result showed that a variety of microbes at Rhizosphere could be classified as Trichoderma sp. Aspergillus sp., Pythium sp., Fusarium sp., Cunninghamelal sp., and Penicillium sp..

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' conceptual  understanding and their difficulties in grasping the static fluid concepts after they learned throughout integrated e-formative assessments in collaborative inquiry. This mixed-method research involved 28 senior high school students.  Students studied static fluid concepts with a collaborative inquiry strategy supported by the implementation of web-based formative assessment. Students' conceptual understanding and their difficulties were assessed using multiple-choice questions with the reasons (r= 0.75.). The result showed that students' conceptual understanding was improved after learning, which is indicated by the moderate normalized gain value (0.5374), and the strong effect size (2.772). However, there were still some difficulties that students have regarding factors that influence buoyancy. Providing more portion of the conceptual discussions and practising problem-solving during learning through e-formative assessment were recommended. Learning difficulties that have been found in this study can be considered and anticipated by teachers in teaching static fluid topic.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the misconceptions of secondary school students (junior and senior high school) and pre-service physics teachers about simple electrical circuits.  The study involved 92 people consisting of 30 junior high school students, 32 senior high school students, and 30 pre-service physics teachers. The diagnostic misconception instrument was adapted from the Simple Electric Circuits Diagnostic Test (SECDT). Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential analysis. The results of the study indicated that there are 11 misconceptions types that the student had. The clashing current is a type of misconception that is most often found both in high school students and in pre-service teacher. The inferential test showed that there were significant differences of misconception scores among junior high school students, senior high school students, and pre-service physics teachers (KW=12,689, df=2, p< 0.05). Teachers could use the misconception profile as a consideration in planning classroom instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Project Based Learning (STEM-PjBL) and discovery learning on students' problem-solving abilities. The research is a Quasi-Experiment with a Nonequivalent Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The participants involved are 53 students of class X from a high school in Malang, where 28 students studied with STEM-PjBL, and 25 students studied with discovery learning. This research was conducted on the subject of impulse and momentum. In this analysis, researchers have developed problem-solving tools with a particular field approach to impulse and momentum topics in order to obtain an instrument with a reliability of  0.81. This instrument collects student problem-solving data before and after learning both in the experimental class and in the comparison class. Problem-solving skills data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The results showed a significant difference in the scores of students' problem-solving abilities in the experimental class and the comparison class (p<0.05). The problem-solving ability in the experimental class (Md=78.74) was higher than the comparison class (Md=70.00). In STEM-PjBL learning, students are better trained and challenged to solve problems in everyday life. Compared to the comparison class, learning in the experimental class is more able to accommodate students' ideas and make students more interested in learning. In conclusion, STEM-PjBL has a significant positive effect on improving students' problem-solving abilities rather than discovery learning.
