Abstract

Abstract: This research discusses the process of forming and developing of Pondol village in Manado as a location for exile along with the Dutch colonial government policy that placed exiles who came from several sultanates in Java in the Manado Residency during the 19th century. The discussion includes, first, the background of the exile of the Javanese aristocrats in Manado. Second, the process of establishing Pondol as a location for exile and its development during the XIX century, and third, the adaptations made by the exiles to adjust to their exile and the impact of their arrival on the Manado-Minahasa community. The historical method is used in this research, using colonial archives from the XIX century which are stored in the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia, and local sources, especially manuscripts stored by their descendants in Manado and Java. The findings in this study are; Kampung Pondol was formed due to the isolation of Kanjeng Ratu Sekar Kedaton and Pangeran Suryeng Ingalaga and some of his followers originated from political intrigue that occurred in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. Second, the reason why Kampung Pondol was chosen as the new location for exile by the Dutch colonial government for Javanese royal officials was different from the exile of other figures in Tondano and Tomohon. Third, the form of adaptation carried out by the exiles in Kampung Pondol Manado was marriage with women from Manado and relationships with Dutch people who lived around them. Keywords : Exile, Javanese Noble, Pondol Village, Adaptation. Abstract

The history of a village plays a crucial role in preserving the heritage and identity of a region. Village history documentation not only serves as a record of valuable events but also strengthens the emotional bond within the community and inspires younger generations. Furthermore, village history can serve as a reference for village heads and local government officials in identifying both the potential and challenges faced by the village, enabling them to make more precise and wise decisions. The main issue found in Walewangko and Raranon Villages, Langowan Barat District, is the absence of comprehensive written historical records. Although the community has the desire to document their village history, limitations in historical writing methods and techniques hinder its realization. Previous efforts have been limited to simple chronological records, which do not provide a complete depiction of the village's history. This community service program is carried out through a historical writing training method. The training team equips participants with materials on historical research methods, techniques for finding historical sources, compiling chronicles, as well as structuring and effectively writing historical narratives. Through this initiative, the community is expected to produce more comprehensive historical documentation, either in the form of historical glimpses or a complete village history. The results of this program are also expected to be published in print and online media, offering broader benefits to the village community and future generations.

Abstract

Previous studies on the Java War have focused primarily on military conflict and colonial punishment, paying limited attention to the post-war lives of Muslim exiles and the mechanisms of coexistence that emerged in exile destinations such as Minahasa. This article addresses that gap by examining how the exile of Kiai Modjo and his followers after the Java War (1825–1830) contributed to the formation of a Muslim minority community within a predominantly Christian social space. This study asks how did colonial exile function as a mechanism of governance, and through what social and institutional practices was coexistence negotiated in Minahasa? Drawing on colonial archival records, an Arabic Pegon manuscript, and oral traditions from Kampung Jawa Tondano, the article analyzes exile as both a strategy of colonial containment and an unintended process of minority-making. The findings argue that coexistence did not take the form of abstract pluralism, but emerged as a negotiated social practice shaped by settlement-making, religious institutionalization, economic activity, and inter-communal relations, including marriage and conversion. By reframing exile as a generative historical process, this article contributes to discussions on Muslim minorities, interfaith encounters, and identity negotiation in colonial Indonesia.

Abstract

Traditional musical instruments are an important component of intangible cultural heritage, yet many remain underrepresented in contemporary digital music production. In particular, Minahasan bamboo instruments face limited accessibility due to the lack of digital instrument representations. This study addresses this issue by developing a culturally informed Virtual Studio Technology (VST3) plugin that digitizes and simulates the characteristic sounds of Minahasan bamboo music. The proposed approach combines field recording, digital audio processing, and sample-based virtual instrument development using the JUCE framework. The resulting plugin was evaluated through functional, compatibility, performance, and cultural fidelity testing across multiple digital audio workstations. Experimental results demonstrate accurate MIDI-to-audio translation, low-latency performance, stable operation, and efficient CPU usage. User evaluations further confirm the authenticity of the sound and the usability of the interface. The findings indicate that VST-based digitization offers a practical and transferable solution for preserving traditional musical instruments while enabling their integration into modern music production workflows.

Abstract

This study examines the historical formation of ecotheological discourse in South Sulawesi by emphasizing the role of local wisdom rooted in the relationship between religion, humans, and nature, as well as its encounters with Abrahamic religions. Accordingly, the focus of this study is adat (customary traditions) and their dynamics within a historical context, including colonial understandings of local religions. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, supported by historical analysis to trace religious conceptions of the relationship between humans and nature. The findings show that local wisdom embedded in indigenous/ancestral religion systems plays an important role in shaping ethical relationships between humans and the natural environment, which later interacted with the theological frameworks of Abrahamic religions (such as Christianity). These interactions produced distinctive forms of discourse, reflecting both continuity and religious adaptation. Ultimately, this study affirms that ecotheology in South Sulawesi is not a new construct but a historically rooted discourse that remains relevant to the development of environmental ethics grounded in local cultural traditions.
