Abstract

This article analyses a strategy of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah, a youth Muslim women organization, in developing its ideology and the importance of gender in the reign of New Order Indonesia (1966-1998). In the name of political stability, the New Order applied a tight political control towards mass-religious based organizations and tried to minimize their militancy by forming new women’s movement organizations such as Dharma Wanita and PKK that are easily controlled by the government. As an Islamic women organization, Nasyiatul Aisyiyah underwent the surveillance practiced by the government via those two bodies; however Nasyiatul Aisyiyah could constantly maintain its entity as an Islamic women organization. In the 1980s when the New Order Regime was predominantly in power, Nasyiatul Aisyiyah held negotiations and adapted to the governmental gender policy to assure the position and the interests of young women.

Abstract

During the course of women's movement history in Indonesia since a century ago, 'educated' women have had assumed significant roles. They have become one of the most important agents to promote social changes in Indonesian community, particularly in the areas affecting women's standing in society, such as improving and extending education, women's representation in the parliament, challenging the practice of child marriage and women in the work force. This paper attempts to portray women's empirical experiences in dealing with their domestic affairs with particular emphasis given to the nature of their gender relationships with husband and parents in law. The women participating in this preliminary study do not represent the 'working class' who has limited qualifications in terms of training and professional skills. Far from those characteristics, they all hold higher degree in education and have stable career as professionals. Based on several series of interviews, the study finds that while the women have achieved greater social and economic status and independency within their public life, the condition of the gender relation within the confine of family household remains the same. It is found that women have been assigned greater responsibility for maintaining the relationships within their own immediate family as well as with their in laws'. Not only do these women experience double burdens, they are exposed to multi burdens, in terms of gender relations with their in laws.

Abstract

The community-based support system for suicide prevention was discovered using the qualitative analysis. In order to safeguard cases of suicide in person, twelve stakeholders were observed and interviewed about their experiences from Gunungkidul, Indonesia. This study finds that community-based assistance can be divided into three types of behaviours: responsiveness, localised healing, and empathy. Families provide security, comfort and acceptance. Public care is also offered to communities, including support and social institutions. Social advocacy and rehabilitation are CBOs program. It gives new perspective on suicide prevention, which is still primarily psychological approach and rarely employs integrative system to decrease suicide rates.    Keywords: Community-Based Support System, Suicide Prevention, Mental Illness, Indonesian Grassroots Sistem dukungan berbasis komunitas untuk pencegahan bunuh diri ditemukan melalui analisis kualitatif. Abstract

Since the Iranian Islamic Revolution in 1979, Shia and its community have been the subject of much research. This paper examines the phenomenon of conversion from Sunni to Shia in Indonesia. It seeks to identify the reasons people choose to convert to Shia, even though it can lead to psychological, economic, social, and political tensions. This is a qualitative research based on a fieldwork conducted in four cities in Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta and Makassar. These cities are representative of Indonesia. The results of the study show that there are at least four 'gates' that are commonly cited as reasons for converting from Sunni to Shia. These gates are philosophy, history, irfan/sufism, and fiqh. The typology of encounters through the four gates is a strong typology that we found in our research. Most people who convert from Sunni to Shia usually pass through one or several gates that are key factors in their decision to accept Shia.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper asks the question: why is it mostly men who define good manhood and womanhood? Where are women’s voices on these contested concepts? To elucidate women’s conceptualization of manhood and womanhood, this study draws on the oldest Indonesian Muslim women organization in Indonesia, ‘Aisyiyah, by examining its published treatises Interviews with 'Aisyiyah activists were also taken in June and August 2021 to enrich and clarify data from these documents. Amongst the most significant findings are that ‘Aisyiyah has argued for a very different kind of manhood and womanhood from those promoted by conservative groups, religiously and culturally. ‘Aisyiyah does jihad for a mutual and reciprocal idea of good manhood and womanhood; that means good men must behave well to women, and good women must respect men. Their arguments are based on contextual interpretations of Qur’anic texts and Prophetic traditions as well as local and cultural notions of proper manhood and womanhood.
