Abstract

Abstract: The presence of a mining company in a region positively impacts regional development by increasing employment and economic growth opportunities. On the other hand, mining companies run the risk of causing environmental deterioration and social conflict. The purpose of this study was to analyze potential societal conflicts in coal mining areas as well as alternative solutions. This study was carried out in Indragiri Hulu, Riau, utilizing a combination of surveys, in-depth interviews, physical observations, and review literature. It was discovered that issues of property ownership, permits, and land acquisition, as well as issues of usage of public facilities, were the triggers for social conflict. Mining companies have offered community empowerment programs through higher education scholarships to develop human resources (HR) capacity. It is critical to build human resource capacity to support regional growth and competitiveness through productive activities that are advantageous to economic development to facilitate the achievement of social and economic resilience in local communities. This is crucial so that only a few people lose their jobs and undermine the company's stability due to friction over land conflicts and social issues. As a solution, a community empowerment program intervention in the areas of education and productive activities that are carried out ideally is required to strengthen the community's sense of ownership in the company. This makes operational sustainability more accessible because positive social, economic, and environmental benefits are maintained collaboratively. The role of Commission VII DPR RI and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is vast in making this goal successful.

Abstract

The mining industry has an important contribution to the economy and regional growth, but it also has the risk of environmental disturbance, so it is required to carry out reclamation. A special strategy is needed for the success of reclamation can improve the quality of life of the community and other organisms. The purpose of this research is to examine successful mining reclamation methods that can be implemented. This study uses a qualitative approach through social observation, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and a literature review. Reclamation by PT. X consists of programs for the preparation, planning, implementation and management of reclamation areas. At the preparation stage PT. X conducts public consultations to listen to suggestions, opinions and responses from local communities, especially land owners who are rent. PT. X applies the participatory-accommodative principle. This strategy puts forward a bottom-up mechanism, namely the local landowners provide advice to PT. X related to the type and implementation of reclamation and PT. X conducts verification as well as careful and in-depth studies of technical implementation. Reclamation needs to be managed by providing an enclave zone that acts as a center for mining environmental protection. The area of the enclave zone should ideally be determined based on consideration of the area of the IUP, ecosystem typology, diversity, evenness and distribution of flora and fauna, as well as total carbon emissions. Just and prosperous reclamation is carried out by considering the existence and proper allocation of space for abiotic and biotic components including sources of livelihood for local communities.

Abstract

Corruption in Indonesia's natural resource sector is a significant issue with far-reaching consequences for environmental sustainability. Despite the detrimental effects of corrupt practices on the environment, law enforcement penalties for corruption often fail to compensate for their environmental impact. The aim of the study is to explore how the use of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) strengthens law enforcement efforts and increase penalties for corrupt practices in Indonesia's natural resource sector. The method used is to collect and analyze regulations, policies, and corruption study cases to examine the relationship between EIA and corruption penalties. The results showed that EIA can help corruption cases investigation and corruption cases involving EIA receive heavier penalties. This study concluded that the Indonesian government needs to reformulate its law enforcement approach by incorporating EIA into corruption investigations and using more severe penalties to deter corruption in the natural resource sector.

Abstract

This study is associated with the increased pressure on hill resources due to land conversion that causes environmental degradation and leads to environmental unsustainability. The evenly spread hill known as Bukit Sepuluh Ribu, is a source of community life. The hill formed by the eruption of a volcano, has a land cover, namely close to forest vegetation. The study location is in Bukit Sepuluh Ribu area that has ecological, hydrological, geological and aesthetic environmental function. The concept of community empowerment through Agro-ecosystem can be a solution, thus the utilization of the hill is economically profitable and environmentally sustainable. There are land use unsuitability referring to the existing spatial plan (682.9 Ha), namely high densely settlement area (264.67 Ha), other agriculture (359.21 Ha) and mining areas (58.51 Ha), Through the concept of appropriate community empowerment in accordance with the rules and typology of hill areas can provide the potential benefits of ecosystems and produce products of economic value without damaging them. The concept of empowerment through dryland agro-ecosystem by combining forest-based agriculture activities is one of the solutions to the problem of land management.

Abstract

Environmental education (EE) has begun in Indonesia since 1970, however the environmental damages that come from human behaviour are still going on and even increasing. This may imply that the results of environmental education have not been seen. Performance of teachers as educators and learning designers need to be evaluated. The research was conducted at Gonzaga High School in Jakarta and Loyola High School in Semarang with a quantitative approach and qualitative data as supporters. The method used was survey, with questionnaires technique and in-depth interviews. The results show that the active participation of the students in terms of protecting the environment is very low. It means the effectiveness of environmental education in terms of this side is not effective. Performance of teachers as educators and learning designers in the implementation of EE affects the active participation of students in terms of conserving the environment. Training for teachers in making learning instrument needs to be done regarding the conduct of learning related EE more effective.
