Abstract

Forest conversion resulted in loss of various forest functions, mainly the hydrological function changes. Mostly of the conversion of forests were to be oil palm and rubber plantations. Rubber plantation although an artificial ecosystem but had the similarity to forest condition. The purpose of this research was to examine the role of rubber plantation to reducing net rainfall that reached the plantation ground through the interception loss mechanism. Water volume balance was used to measure the interception loss. The results showed that the interception on the rubber plantation increased with the increasing of rubber age. Through fall tend to decreased with the increasing of rubber age were 60.56%, 53.62% and 43.79% of the total precipitation for 10 years, 15 years and 25 years of age respectively during the research period. The percentage of stem flow was 5.98% 7.94%, and 4.39% of total precipitation for 10 years, 15 years and 25 years of age respectively. The percentage of interception on rubber plantation for 10 years, 15 years and 25 years were 331.76 mm (19.6%), 428.73 mm (25.3%), and 545.79 mm (51.81%) of the total rainfall (1053.3 mm) respectively. Rubber plantation had good potency to reducing the net rainfall that reached the ground. This condition also informed that rubber plantation could reduce the risk of floods occurrence.Key words: rubber plantation, net rainfall, interception, through fall, stem flow

Abstract

Peatland conversion has become a serious issue in recent years. The dynamic between peatland protection and limited space for urban development is a strategic issue in spatial planning. This research aims to evaluate the spatial pattern planning of peatland areas in the 2018 Regional Spatial Plan of Humbang Hasundutan District. The focus of this research is a peatland area of 666.77 hectares. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a spatial data exploration approach using ArGIS 10.8 application. The results show that the spatial pattern plan of peatland in 2018 has a mismatch in spatial use, non-peatland reaches 357.06 hectares (53.55%), most of which is used as fields/crops (39.10%) and settlements (3.04%). The extent of land rights reaches 118.47 hectares (17.77%), while land without land rights is dominated by swamp land use (32.96 hectares or 41.51%). Cultivated land has the largest share (62.72%) as a potential cultivation function. Improvements to the spatial pattern plan for peatlands have decreased in area by -295.84 hectares (-44.37%), which needs to be considered in the future revision of the Humbang Hasundutan District Spatial Plan, including the regulation of general zoning provisions.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze reduction-based waste management strategies in Medan Helvetia District, Medan City. The method used is qualitative with a survey approach and using SWOT and AHP analysis. This research began by identifying waste reduction efforts that had been carried out by residents of Medan Helvetia District and then a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was carried out which resulted in 3 activity targets to be developed, namely (1) strategies to increase community participation to join environmental care communities; (2) strategy to improve the performance of waste banks, and (3) strategy to implement the circular economy concept in waste management to support the improvement of the people's economy. Based on the results of the SWOT analysis, the appropriate strategy for realizing the first activity target is the integration of the waste management education program with the TP PKK work program as well as providing waste reduction information on social media and banners in each sub-district. The priority target for the second activity is placing outlets receiving segregated waste in strategic location in the sub-district as well as waste bank management training, and the third priority strategy target, namely partner collaboration and capital assistance as well as assistance with composter equipment to produce organic fertilizer. The results of the AHP analysis show that the priority strategy in waste management based on reduction is increasing community participation to join environmental care communities with a weight value of 0.446 with an inconsistency value of 0.00001. This research shows that to increase community participation, continuous education is needed to be able to sort organic and inorganic waste, as well as disseminate information and waste reduction campaigns on social media and banners in each sub-district.
