Abstract

In order to know the habitat preference gradation for gall-forming insects from the border to the middle of the habitat or more precise the edge effect on the galling existence and the expansion ability of local gall to infect on non indigenous species, observation of all plant life collections block by block in the Bogor Botanic Garden were done. Host plant and galling insect species composition differed quite characteristically between the edge and the interior of paths, but did not for galling insect richness. Insect gall richness was expressed as the ratio between insect gall and host plant richness (gall per plant ratio) and in the same time a weak relationship of insect species–area was found. Our results suggest that the number of galling insects per individual plant is not affected by the size of the patch. Despite these results, the natural forest patches are found in this region seem well suited for long-term studies addressing species–area relationships.

Abstract

Cross sections of leaves of Pandanus spp. showed that their leaf anatomy is similar, whilst paradermal sections indicated that crystal numbers differ. Variation was found in the anticlinal epidermal cell walls, stomata, hypodermis, sclerenchyma, mesophyll and crystals, as discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Study in leaves anatomy of twenty nine samples of the species classified under Pandanus, Freycinetia and Sararanga of Pandanaceae had been undertaken to unravel generic relationship among of these taxa with a view to provide a set of diagnostic characters for taxonomic identification. The fourth genus of Pandanaceae, Benstonea is not included in this analysis since there are no representative samples. Four anatomical diagnostic characters had been identified at the generic level such as present and absent of papillae, stomatal arrangement types, present and absent of bundle sheath extension and hypodermal thickness and its shape. Pandanus has papillae, amphistomatous stomata, bundle sheath extension present and hypodermis thin and rectangular; Freycinetia lacked of papillae, stomata hypostomatous or amphistomatous, bundle sheath extension absent and hypodermis thick and hexagonal or rounded; meanwhile Sararanga has no papillae, stomata amphistomatous, bundle sheath extension absent and hypodermis thin and flatten. An identification key to those genera based on anatomical diagnostic characters is provided.

Abstract

Leaf anatomy of four species of Murraya (Rutaceae) have been examined. Murraya spp. leaf has dorsiventral type. Anticlinal epidermis cell wall present with straight-undulate and square-irregular shaped. Anomocytic stomata distribute only in the lower surface and simple trichome spread in both leaf surfaces except M. crenulata (Turz.) Oliv. which has trichome only in the lower surface. Mesophyll consist of 2 or more layers of palisade tissues in the leaf upper part and sponge below, but M. exotica L. has palisade tissue in both leaf side. Oil gland distribute in the mesophyll. Crystal present as prismatic (cuboid) and drusse type.

Abstract

A study on species composition and threat potential of invasive plant species was conducted in the Gunung Halimun-Salak National Park,Cidahu Resort, West Java. We developed two plots of different altitudes. The result showed that there were four invasive alien species possessing potential threat to the ecosystem and native species in the National Park, i.e. Piper aduncum (Piperaceae, with an Important Value of 20,70); Calliandra calothyrsus (Mimosaceae, IV = 9,11), Austroeupatorium inulaefolium (Asteraceae, IV = 18,77), and Clidemia hirta (Melastomataceae) as shrub. The threats of invasive plants happen in open forest area and could occur from the residential or public places.

Abstract

Research on gall (including field and laboratory observations and field collecting) have been conducted in the Mounts Gede Pangrano (MGPNP) and Halimun Salak National Parks (MHSNP). This research focused on gall shapes, host plant species, and parts of the host plants infected by galls. The result showed that there were 169 gall numbers in MGNP and 127 numbers in MHSNP have been collected. Distribution of plant species infected by the galls were rather same in the both conservation areas. In MHSNP seven families mostly infected by galls: Araceae, 4 species of 5 gall numbers collection in the family (=4/5), Elaeocarpaceae (5/5), Euphorbiaceae (7/9), Lauraceae (8/11), Moraceae (6/7), Melastomataceae (4/4) and Rubiaceae (9/12). In MGPNP the composition is only fairly different: Araliaceae (4/6),Euphorbiaceae (8/13), Lauraceae (9/12), Melastomataceae (5/6), Moraceae (13/22), Myrtaceae (9/11) and Rubiaceae (6/13). At least 23 gall shapes were found in both locations. The most common shape of galls found in MGNP was irregular, while in MHSNP was globular.Galls were mostly (90%) collected from leaf including peduncles and leaf venations. The other parts included twigs, branches, stems, flowers,and fruits. The most common insect found investing galls (i.e. insect gallers) was the midges (54.4%) followed by mites (18.5%), psyllids (11.1%), thrips (6.3%), coccids (1.9%), and aleurodes (1.9%).

Abstract

Leaves anatomy of Averrhoa spp. in Indonesia have been studied for supporting morphological character which used to recognize four species: A. carambola, A. bilimbi, A. leucopetala and A. dolichocarpa. The letter two species have leave crowded terminally or near the top of stem similar to those leave of A. bilimbi, whereas the fruit shape similar to A. carambola.The result of this study indicated that, these four species showed differently in their thickness of lamina and epidermis cell as well.

Abstract

Talinum triangulare Wild. pollen were germinated in vivo in the stigma with three hand pollination treatments based on pollen donor in order to know its germination rate and if the pollen tube growth rate affected by pollen origin. Flower buds were picked at prior to anthesis time and let them to anthesize in laboratory condition. The three pollination treatments were directly excecuted at full anthesis stage and four different incubation times: 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes. The experiment was conducted twice with about one month interval between November and December 2008. Signifi cantly different pollen tube growth rate was only showed between stigma pollinated by pollen from neighbor fl owers of same individual and stigma pollinated by pollen from next indidual plant. Highest final pollen germination level and tube growth rate was resulted by hand pollination with pollen from neighbour flowers of the same individual called geitonogamy (54.84% and 9.081 ?m per minute). Second highest was pollination with pollen from the flower itself called autogamy (45.92% and 6.806 ?m per minute). The lowest was hand pollination with pollen from flowers of outside individual called exogamy (39.61% and 3.525 ?m per minute). Stagnated growth of pollen tubes after pollination with outside pollen in exogamy at fi rst minutes of incubation may be related to individual adaptation.

Abstract

Ecological study of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) at two altitudes in Mount Gede PangrangoNational Park was carried out by using quadrate method. The studied plots located at altitude1400 m and 1500 m a.s.l, in 0.2 ha each. The result shows that 45 species of trees, 77 species ofsaplings and 48 species of seedlings were recorded. Five species (i.e. Bartlettina sordida,Austroeupatorium inulaefolium, Cestrum aurantiacum, Brugmansia suaveolens and Passiflorasuberosa) are catagorized as IAS which threaten the ecosystem and natural species.

Abstract

Three variations of Arundina graminifolia flowers have been recognized, (1) group of big flower with reddish violetlip and purplelish white sepals and petals (2) group of small flower with white lip and white sepals and petals (3)similar to second variation but with purple color on the lip apex. In order to clarify the taxonomy status of thosethree variations, a leaf anatomical study had been carried out. Results of this study showed that there were somedifferences among them in trichome shape and number mesophyll layers. Big flower group of Arundina hastrichome club shape and thick mucous in the apex with mesophyll layer 9-11; for small flower group has white lip,trichome club shape, thick mucous and granulate in the apex, but only 2 mesophyl layers; whereas for other smallflower group with purple lip has trichome cup shape and 10-13 layers of mesophyll. Based on the differences inflower size and their color variation, and combined with leaf anatomical study, we suggested the three variationsof A. graminifolia should be in separated groups.
