Abstract

Background:  Vocational students often struggle to understand English texts that are complex and not related to their daily lives. In Eastern Indonesia, the lack of culturally relevant materials can reduce engagement and comprehension. Integrating local wisdom into reading materials can bridge this gap by connecting learning with students’ experiences, supported by schema theory and culturally responsive pedagogy. Aims: This study aimed to identify vocational students’ needs for English reading materials incorporating local wisdom in Banggai Laut, Central Sulawesi, and to examine how cultural elements relate to students’ reading challenges, learning needs, and preferences. Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design within a needs analysis framework. The analysis of target needs (lacks, needs, and wants) was informed by Hutchinson and Waters, while learning needs (input, procedures, teacher roles, learner roles, and settings) were based on Nunan. Twenty students from SMK Al-Hajar and SMK Negeri 2 Banggai participated during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through a 33-item Likert-scale online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean scores and percentages to identify dominant response patterns. Results: The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties with complex sentence structures, technical vocabulary, and factual texts lacking cultural relevance. They reported strong needs for vocabulary support, culturally familiar topics, visual aids, and teacher guidance. Students preferred reading materials related to local folktales, coastal life, traditions, and regional history, and favored activities such as independent reading, small-group discussion, summarizing, highlighting keywords, and strategy modeling. Implications: Mapping students’ target and learning needs prior to material development is essential for vocational contexts. Incorporating local wisdom can support more engaging, comprehensible, and contextually relevant English learning aligned with students’ cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

The phenomenon of populist rhetoric in Indonesian local politics demonstrates the paradox between moral empathy and violation of the rule of law. This research focuses on the case of Gorontalo Mayor Adhan Dambea, who openly encouraged MSMEs to sell on the sidewalk under the pretext of siding with the common people. His statement — “Kami berpihak pada rakyat, bukan pejabat. Kalau ada yang melarang, saya pasang badan.” — sparked a public debate that represented a discursive battle between moral legitimacy and legal norms. This research uses an approachqualitative-descriptivewith the methodCritical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough) combined with theorypopulism, through the modelEmpirical dual-layer CDA:simultaneous analysis of (1) the leader's discourse (institutional discourse) and (2) public counter-discourse. Data was obtained from the Mayor's statements in online media ( Pikiran Rakyat, RRI Gorontalo, Gorontalo Post, Website Pemkot ) and public comments on TikTok and news columns. The research results show three main findings: (1) populist rhetoric operates through moral empathy as legitimation for rule violations, (2) legal ambiguity is exploited as a source of symbolic power to frame moral actions, and (3) public counter-discourse forms moral resistance that affirms the supremacy of law and pedestrian rights. Theoretically, this study extends Fairclough's model by adding a dimension-populist empathy as a form of discursive power, and demonstrates that local political language plays an active role in shaping spatial planning and social legitimacy. The results are expected to form the basis for empathetic, legal, and just public communication. Keywords: Populist rhetoric, Critical Discourse Analysis, moral empathy, legal legitimacy, public counter-discourse, Gorontalo City

Abstract

This study examines the use of Juvenalian satire in three songs by System of a Down, namely B.Y.O.B., Chop Suey!, and Toxicity. The research applies Susanna Morton Braund’s theory of Juvenalian satire and Emilio Betti’s hermeneutic approach to uncover the social, political, and moral criticism embedded in the lyrics. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes diction, symbolism, irony, sarcasm, and confrontational expressions found in the selected songs. The findings reveal that the songs consistently employ the major characteristics of Juvenalian satire: contemptuous tone, sharp criticism, irony and sarcasm, and provocative confrontation. B.Y.O.B. criticizes war, class inequality, and political hypocrisy; Chop Suey! questions social judgment and moral dogmatism; and Toxicity condemns the destructive effects of modern urban civilization and ideological domination. Through aggressive language and symbolic imagery, System of a Down transforms music into a medium of resistance against injustice and abuse of power. The study concludes that Juvenalian satire remains relevant in contemporary music because it provides a powerful framework for expressing dissent and encouraging critical reflection on social realities.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal how positive character is revealed in children’s poems. This is based on the phenomenon that mostly it is the adults that teach positive character to children by writing poems for children. We seldom find analysis that reveals how children perceive the positive character and express it in their poems. For this aim, the writers analyzed three poems that consist of two Indonesian poems and one English poem. The poems were analyzed in two steps, i.e., by skimming and intensive reading. Skimming is to get the general impression and intensive reading is to have an intensive understanding of the poems by analyzing the keywords, key phrases, and key sentences of the poems. The result of the analysis shows that Indonesian poems put a positive character on honoring heroes. English poem puts a positive on praying and feeling empathy for those who are suffering and criminals. This indicates that children have their own perception of positive characters as reflected in their poems.

This article is intended to serve as a model for drama analysis using a pragmatik approach, applying the relevance theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson. The play used as an example is Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman." The author presents dialogue between the play's characters as material for analyzing meaning. This meaning lies at the level of explicature, high-level explicature, and implicature. It is hoped that students will be able to apply this analysis model in their final assignments.
