Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a foundational element of English language acquisition, yet many learners continue to struggle with it in classroom settings. This study explored how the Froggy Jump game, accessed through Educaplay media, affected vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Botupingge. A quantitative approach was employed using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. Twenty-eight students from class 7A were selected as the sample through purposive sampling from a population of 246 students across three grade levels. The intervention was conducted over six meetings, with a vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment to measure learning gains. A significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores was established through paired-sample t-test analysis, which returned a p-value of 0.000, considerably lower than the 0.05 significance threshold. The mean score improved markedly from 45.57 to 85.57, demonstrating a substantial gain in vocabulary mastery. These findings confirm that the use of the Froggy Jump game had a positive and meaningful effect on students' vocabulary learning outcomes. The findings of this study strengthen existing scholarly evidence regarding the effectiveness of game-based digital media in EFL instruction, while also offering actionable implications for language educators seeking to enhance student engagement and vocabulary acquisition through technology-integrated learning.

Abstract

This research investigates the effect of English teachers’ emotional intelligence (EI) on students’ English learning at MAN 1 Kota Gorontalo. Emotional intelligence, including the indicators such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, plays a crucial role in shaping classroom dynamics and fostering students’ motivation. The research aims to explore how English teachers’ EI influences students’ confidence, engagement, and enthusiasm in learning English. This research employed a qualitative case study design. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations involving two English teachers and ten students from grades 10 and 11 during the 2024/2025 academic year. Thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns emerging from participants’ experiences. Findings revealed that emotionally intelligent teachers significantly enhance students’ learning experiences through five major impacts: (1) enhancing self-confidence by appreciating efforts and normalizing mistakes; (2) creating supportive and enjoyable learning environments; (3) fostering intrinsic motivation through meaningful and engaging activities; (4) encouraging future aspirations such as studying abroad; and (5) providing emotional support and promoting peer collaboration. These practices contribute to a positive classroom climate where students feel valued, motivated, and resilient. The study concludes that teachers’ emotional intelligence is not only a personal quality but also a pedagogical competence essential for sustaining students’ motivation and well-being. It recommends integrating EI development into teacher training and professional programs to enhance both instructional effectiveness and emotional support in language education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and describe students’ perceptions of English teachers’ teaching styles at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Gorontalo. It employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants consisted of 21 eleventh-grade students and two English teachers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes. The findings reveal that students generally have positive perceptions of their teachers’ teaching styles. The teachers predominantly applied democratic and expressive styles, characterized by a relaxed and comfortable classroom atmosphere, two-way communication, the integration of learning technologies such as videos and presentations, and the use of relevant examples and storytelling. These approaches were found to enhance students’ motivation, participation, and confidence in speaking English. However, some students still experienced difficulties in grammar and pronunciation and showed diverse learning preferences. In conclusion, teaching styles play a crucial role in shaping students’ perceptions and fostering an effective and engaging English learning environment. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to develop interactive, varied, and student-centered teaching strategies to accommodate diverse student needs.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Role Play technique as an active learning strategy in improving the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at MTs Al-Huda Gorontalo. The research employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design. The participants of the study were 24 students of Class VII-B in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through speaking tests administered before and after the treatment. The speaking assessment covered fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and comprehensibility using a rubric adapted from Brown (2004). The treatment was conducted in six meetings through structured, semi-guided, and open-ended role play activities based on daily communication contexts. The results showed that students’ speaking skills improved significantly after the implementation of the Role Play technique. The mean score increased from 48.55 in the pre-test to 63.36 in the post-test. In addition, students became more confident, active, and fluent in expressing ideas orally. The paired sample t-test indicated that the improvement was statistically significant at the 0.05 level. Therefore, Role Play was found to be effective in improving students’ speaking skills and creating a more interactive and communicative learning environment.

Abstract

Background:  Vocational students often struggle to understand English texts that are complex and not related to their daily lives. In Eastern Indonesia, the lack of culturally relevant materials can reduce engagement and comprehension. Integrating local wisdom into reading materials can bridge this gap by connecting learning with students’ experiences, supported by schema theory and culturally responsive pedagogy. Aims: This study aimed to identify vocational students’ needs for English reading materials incorporating local wisdom in Banggai Laut, Central Sulawesi, and to examine how cultural elements relate to students’ reading challenges, learning needs, and preferences. Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design within a needs analysis framework. The analysis of target needs (lacks, needs, and wants) was informed by Hutchinson and Waters, while learning needs (input, procedures, teacher roles, learner roles, and settings) were based on Nunan. Twenty students from SMK Al-Hajar and SMK Negeri 2 Banggai participated during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through a 33-item Likert-scale online questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean scores and percentages to identify dominant response patterns. Results: The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties with complex sentence structures, technical vocabulary, and factual texts lacking cultural relevance. They reported strong needs for vocabulary support, culturally familiar topics, visual aids, and teacher guidance. Students preferred reading materials related to local folktales, coastal life, traditions, and regional history, and favored activities such as independent reading, small-group discussion, summarizing, highlighting keywords, and strategy modeling. Implications: Mapping students’ target and learning needs prior to material development is essential for vocational contexts. Incorporating local wisdom can support more engaging, comprehensible, and contextually relevant English learning aligned with students’ cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Skill Academy by Ruang Guru in enhancing students' listening comprehension skills for the TOEFL listening section. Using a quantitative pre-test and post-test design, 15 participants from the English Language Education Study Program underwent four sessions of TOEFL listening preparation through the Skill Academy platform. The study aimed to evaluate the platform’s impact on standardized test preparation and contribute to research on online education. A paired t-test analysis revealed a calculated value of 5.4, surpassing the table value of 2.145 at d_f = 14 and α = 0.05 (two-tailed), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. This indicated a significant improvement in participants' scores after the intervention. The findings suggest that Skill Academy effectively enhanced students' listening skills for the TOEFL, proving its value as an exam preparation tool. This research underscores the potential of online learning platforms in improving targeted test skills. Future studies could examine the long-term effects of such programs and compare different platforms to optimize TOEFL preparation strategies
